Would a 270 or a 270 wsm be a good caliber for long range shooting? Shooting from 300 yd to 1,000 or better if possible.I'm just starting in the long range shooting. Would it be better to go with 308,300wm,270, or 270wsm? Sorry I know people have probably asked alot about caliper selection but any help would be very apprieciated. I still have awhile before I will be home to get started but, I have really been trying to do alot of research on what would be my best options. Thank you.

7wsm would have better bullet selection. But with good bullets the 270 would be more than adequate

Best long range .277 is the Berger 150 VLD. Thats about it. If you want to focus just on long range shooting, there are better candidates.

If you don't reload and you don't plan on hunting long range with the rifle than i would suggest the 6.5 Creedmoor. It has great barrel life, better performance than the 308, really accurate factory match ammo thats affordable, and if you want to get into reloading the recipe to copy the match ammo is not a secret. Hornaday has shared the information to copy its loads. If you want to shoot 1,000yds this cartridge is better suited to your needs.
If you are an experienced reloader and plan to hunt long range than i would suggest a number of different cartridges for 1,000yds. I am using the 270 WSM with a 9 twist Benchmark barrel. With the 170gr class bullets the performance is 3,000fps with a .700bc which is fantastic long range performance. The 7 WSM is perhaps a little better choice for long range since it has at least 8 bullets to choose from that are above the .600bc mark. If you are not recoil sensitive there are the bigger magnums like the 300 Win and 338 Lapua that offer bullets with really high BC's but for paper only i wouldn't suggest it as it is expensive to reload for.

I just started reloading not long ago. I do plan to use it for hunting some but, it will mostly be used for target shooting. I might add I have reloaded a few rounds for 223 but have not had a chance to test them yet. I didn't get the chance to test them before I left.

The 6.5 Creedmoor would be fine with the factory 140 Amax for hunting out to about 5-600yds depending on your ability and for a new reloader it would be easy to learn on. I think this is probably your best option. Partly because with the Hornaday factory match load you will have a benchmark to compare your handloads to and if you have made any mistakes reloading you will be able to learn from it. There are plenty of factory rifles that offer this chambering or you can go full custom if you prefer.

The 308 is probably the most widely used and easiest to get. The WSM are good but pricey and harder to find. Good luck

The 300 WSM is an accurate cartridge. H4350 and 175-185 VLD's are really accurate. IMO there are better suited WSM's for long range like the 7mm due to a wide selection of generally higher BC bullets.

I would go with a short action. I'd start with a 308 Win. to practice and get at least somewhat proficient then have it re- barreled to something in 6.5 mm, like the 260 Rem. The barrel life will be about 6500 or so rounds before the barrel is shot out with the 308 Win. A good trainer caliber. The 260 Rem. should get around 3000 rounds or so before it's shot out. Good for long range. The 260 Rem. is actually fairly similar to the 300WM ballistics.
I started in the long range stuff with a custom built 300 WM and feel I should have started with a .308 Win. If for no other reason than the barrel life. My 300 WM gets just over 1100 rounds through it before it's shot out. Actually with this caliber it's the throat that gets "blow tourched" out. Maybe others get more time out of their 300 WM barrels, but when in timed events you don't have the luxery to let it cool down between rounds.
I'll have to say though with the 17 lb. weight of the rifle I had built and the timed muzzel brake along with a 1" thick
Decel pad, the felt recoil of this 300WM is very tame, however, if you dont "drive" it right it will still hop or jump a bit from time to time if you don't watch it.
Just my .02 cents worth.
