I know there are a couple of guys here with new 280ai's. Mine should be here this week. I have a Rock barrel coming back for heavy bullets. What powders are you using with 162 amaxs. I want to try some RL 17. I have a little on hand. Any other sugestions and how much to start.
Thanks
T
I have searched, no dice.

Re: 280 AI

I'm in the process of building one w a Hart 1-8 #5 so I've been collecting stuff on it in shooting times oct 2008 there was a great article by Layne Simpson called "Coming of Age"He listed a load of 56g of Rl 22 for 2864 f.p.s. for 168 SMK's; and 58g of Rl 25 for the 175 N Parts for 2726 F.p.s. Both of these were from a 24" barrel. I think Rl 17 might be too fast for this cartridge for any but the lightest of bullets, like the 120's

Re: 280 AI

RL 17 seems like it would be too fast but you cant go strickly by the burn rate of RL 15 and RL 19. Both of those powders are surface treated for burn rate and RL 17 is not. Reloader 17 has a more uniform burn rate and seems to give a slower burn than the number would suggest. 17 is doing really well in the 284 case with heavy bullets. RL 17 may turn out to be too fast but I doubt by much. I have 5 pounds of RL 17 I intend to use with my 280AI and 168 VLDs. I also have some 162 A Max but havent used them yet. I'll post a report as soon as I have more info. If 17 doesnt do it I have H1000 and 7828 as well as RL 19, 22 and 25. My barrel is 27 inches which should help me.

hard to beat the temperature stable and easy to load 4831SC !

my 280 shoots extremely well with it. Very low ES and SD's.

handles the heat and Cold hunting temps great.

No brainer for me.

Re: 280 AI

If anyone is interested. I have done a good bit of work with Reloader 17 over the past few days in my 280 AI. I'm using 168 Bergers. My Ackley has a 27 inch Krieger barrel, 1-9 twist. My goal was to get 3000 with the 168. It wasnt hard, and I'm still seeing very little pressure. If anyone has a quickload program, I'd like to see what it has to say. Mine got lost during a move, I'll get another in the group buy. The load I'm shooting for now is giving me about 3015fps and is shooting about 2 inches at 500 yards. I have a load that shoots one little hole at 100 but didnt do so good at 500.
I will list my results but please dont assume that any of this is safe in your gun without working up your load and closely watching for pressure signs. I had nothing to go by since this is such a new powder. I'm amazed at the lack of pressure so far.

Reloader 17, Remington brass, CCI large rifle primers, Berger 7mm 168 VLDs, Trued 700 action
All velocity is average of three shots unless noted and were shot at 100 yards. Oehler sky screens were set at 10 feet. Temp was in the upper 80s to lower 90s during the testing. Elevation 1575
49.0grs this was my starting load to confirm no pressure and to see if the bullet would stablize. It did and it was very mild. Bullets are seated well into the rifling for this testing. I feel this will generate the most pressure and maybe the best accuracy. I have since seated .009 farther off the lands and pressure is now even less.
FOR INFO ONLY! DO NOT CONSIDER SAFE WITHOUT CHECKING IN YOUR GUN!
51.0 2750fps One tiny hole
52.0 2830 One bullet hole -ES- of only 2 fps over three shots
53.0 2872 about 3/4" ES 6 fps
54.0 2905 about .4" primers started to flatten a bit.
54.5 2962
55.0 2980
55.5 2992
56.0 3030 1/2 moa @ 100 and less than 1/2 moa @ 500 most of the time.
56.5 3063
This is as high as I have gone, not because I have pressure but just because it seems I shouldnt be getting over 3000 so easy, and I ran out of time. Brass is not flowing, bolt opens easily, case heads arent swelling, primers are flat but I've had much worse. I think I can keep going and I will see how far I can go next week if I have time. 3100 should be no problem but if someone has quickload, lets see what it says. So far I really like Reloader 17. I also plan to try 4831, H1000, 7828 and maybe reloader 19 and 22 but the 17 is going to be hard to beat.

Re: 280 AI

That's great! I'll have to try some '17 in my 280AI when I get a chance. I'm running the 168 Bergers @ 2930 w/ RL22 in a 24" Broughton right now, but haven't had a chance to get past 250yds yet. Groups have been right around 1" there.

Re: 280 AI

Where are you seating your bullets for that load? I do want to try the 180s. I had the 168s shooting great but the bullet is so far into the lands that the bolt closes hard. I've seated them deeper, problem fixed but the groups are bigger than before. Its still good but I wish I could have the better load and close the bolt easy. I'm still working on it, I hope next week I have time to work with it some more.

Re: 280 AI

Mine is twisted 1:9, so I may give the 180's a try as well. I using 60.4 grains of RL22 with the 168's, but I'm thinking that I am using a slow lot of RL22. The VLD's are shooting good for me at .010" off the lands.
