For those of you experimenting with .284s at 'tactical' barrel lengths, RE17 appears to yield between 50 and 100fps more velocity in shorter barrels, with 52.0 being an accuracy node. Here are initial results from my Bartlein 25" gain-twist (starting at 9.75 and ending at 8.9); the grid is 3/4" squares:

And for those of you still using 4831sc, 54.5 is an accuracy node but the velocity is low at 2650fps. 56.0 is likely the next node, but with velocities still very much below RE17.

We'll see whether 52.0 RE17 holds together at distance, but SD says it does....

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

Looks like I need to pick up some RL17. This is realy helpful as I should be picking up my first custom build in .284 in the next month or so. Thanks for sharing and keep us updated

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

I just built a 284 also. Its a Savage 110 with a Shilen 28" barrel. Using 162gr Hornady's and 52.5/ R17 I'm pushing 2910fps and 2850fps with 175SMK's and 51.5gr of 17. I'm getting 2.5" groups at 400yds. Haven't tried the new 180SMK's yet.

RG,

I ran R17 in a 7-08 and it was my experience that it liked to be run very near max pressures. My es and sd would decrease significantly the closer I was to max pressure.

We are going to need to see the rifle.

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

Graham,
Is your rifle a long action or are you single-loading those JLKs at that coal? I got a rebarrel back from George right before Christmas and am just now getting around to working with it, 27" Bartlein straight 9 twist but on a short action so I am limited to 2.950 for mag feeding. The Berger 180 at this coal is very deep in the case but nonetheless shows promise with RL-17. Hoping to find an acceptable load with 175smks and RL-17 which will deliver from that shorter oal.
Best,
James

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

I'm using AICS 300WM mags on a long action, with lots of room to spare.

seven, I don't think 52grs RE17 is anywhere near max pressure, and there's lots of case capacity left, but I don't need better than 2850fps. II will have to ask for your advice soon, when I have a 7-08 built for 168's VLD's at 2750.

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

A .680BC seems to work in FFS for the JLK's, slightly better than the .735BC suggested by the program. The higher BC appears to be for the higher (magnum) velocities.

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

I chose a small hit in velocity with 4831sc vs the temp sensitivity of RL17. It's a great powder for accuracy and velocity, I'm just not in to having a summer/winter load.

same here, but I never got great accuracy from r-17, plenty of speed.

Example here on 3/4" grid paper at 300 meters:

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

Cold ammo was outside in the trunk all night and no hotter than the ambient 50F when taken out of the box. Warm ammo was in my pants pocket for about an hour, hotter than 70F. Those are the two states that my match ammo travels in: Ambient temp out of the box, and the rounds I put in my pocket between stages.

Wow. That seems like a big deal. Difference of about 7.5" drop @ 900yds.

Same here. Didnt want to deal with temp induced velocity fluctuations.

I love my Short Action Customs built .284 and 4831sc. Here are some of my 100, 550,. and some 670 yards groups with different loads and bullets.

180vld the day I picked up the rifle and the first groups after doing a ladder test of about 7shots. All of the groups in the first picture are different charge weights since I was doing load dev.
284InitialLoadDevelopment.jpg

180 VLD at 550 yards. yes that is 3 shots.

Each of the 3 shot groups below were rapid fire. Under 10 sec for each group.

175 SMK at 670 yards 1 mil wind dialed

162 Amax 670 yards. 1 mil wind dialed

This was a 180 vld at 670 yards with 1 mil wind dialed. Unfortunately I shanked the last shot completely

Re: .284 data: Moon Builds a Tackdriver

I just got my 284 together. It's built on a short action FN SPR:

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3147046#Post3147046

I ran 24 rounds through it yesterday to break in the barrel prior to sending it out for melonite. I loaded a couple basic/coarse ladders with H4350/162amax and RE17/162amax. Because of this thread, I also loaded 10 rounds with 52gr RE17/162amax.

I'm not much good shooting off the bench with a bipod, but was still able to get 7/10 rounds of 52r RE17/162amax into a .5" hole at 200 yards. The other 3 opened up the group significantly - to about 3/4 moa.

My chrono wasn't working yesterday, so I wasn't able to get velocity.
