.284 Winchester question:

Can a 168gr Berger be pushed to 2900fps in a 25"-26" tube without cooking the hell out of the brass?

I'm looking to re-barrel a SA Rem 700. With the new info on RE17 the .284 Winchester looks promising, but all the info on 6mmBR.com is with 31+ inch tubes.

I'm shooting a .308 right now. I'd like to stay away from fire forming, neck turning, etc. at this point due to time constraints. Otherwise, I'd look at upgrading to the .260AI.

Thanks

It will be close to what you are looking for. But I would go with the 162gr AMAXs instead. They have a little better BC and can be pushed a little faster.

I think you will need a WSM to run short action with that. The 284 with the long long bullets is a no go. I think..... Anyone ive seen rock a 284 shot a long action.

Good point. I'm hoping to avoid going to a magnum, too.

Short-action AICS mags will get me to what, 2.93" or more??? How much would I need?

Re: .284 Win - 168 Berger @2900fs - What will it t

With my WSM's I run 2.935 COAL with 180gr VLDS and 2.930 162gr AMAX and 2.875 with 175gr SMKS. Those were threw WSM modified AICS mags. My new one is using a special setup from Mgress precision im working on. He needs to make the mags longer they are currently at 2.950. My other rifle waiting on a barrel is gona use seekens BDM with a 3.1COAL compatability.

Re: .284 Win - 168 Berger @2900fs - What will it t

I can get 2.960 on my modified AICS mags and that's where I run my 162 AMAXS at in my WSM. Haven't treid to do any work with the 180 Bergers yet at mag length.

I say go magnum and don't look back!

Re: .284 Win - 168 Berger @2900fs - What will it t

I know, I've looked at the 7WSM & it's bad ass. I think the claimed 3,000+ round barrel life from the .284 fits more closely with my shooting budget, though.

Otherwise I'd buy a .338 Lapua & be done with it.

greentimber,

I've been looking into a .284 Win barrel switch on my SA Savage. I just got 5 lbs. of RL-17 and am getting ready to order a Lothar Walther barrel.

I too have read Robert Whitley's article at 6mmbr.com. IIRC he got to 3003 fps with the 180 VLDs so it seems to me that the lighter 168 should get you close to that in the shorter tube, though that's a guess.
