i'm thinking about buying a NXS 3.5-15 x 50 F1

first, this gun is primarily for fun, and secondarily for tactical training. i just want what is the best for what i'm trying to do. i'll be shooting a range from 60-600 yards.

here are my reasons - please let me know if my reasons are off base:

1 - having 15x will be really nice for 600 yard targets
2 - zerostop and high-speed turrets seem like great features
3 - ffp seems like a great feature, especially considering the tactical use scenario

what i'm worried about:

1 - it seems a little heavy (30 oz)
2 - it long (almost 15")

any opinions on this? i'm thinking of making the purchase.

IMO, that is more scope than the scar 17s with 16" barrel needs.

I think of the scar 17s as a battle rifle with something like a 1-4x optic. To me the NF F1 is a precision optic.

Re: $2K scope for SCAR 17s - advice

There's very little out there on which optic is best for the SCAR Heavy. Sounds like you're looking at a good choice. The Leupold CQ/T 1-3x I put on mine is a little too low powered... Even for my ranges which go from 35 yds to 300 yds. I may get something in a 3-9x. I say if you have the Greenbacks... Go for it! Too rich for my blood.

Kind of what I was thinking. What about the 2.5 to 10? It weighs 19oz. FWIW I shooter deer at 600 with a 10x

Re: $2K scope for SCAR 17s - advice

thanks for the input so far.

yes, the SCAR 17 is a battle rifle, but i want versatility. for example - say you get to pick one rifle to pick up and go with, and you will have a variety of different tactical situations to deal with. seems like the SCAR 17 is a great all-around choice.

i've got a nice eotech for the CQB situation - but for reaching out and touching someone/something at 600 yards, i'm going to want some nice glass that is versatile and can be used for observation as well as picking targets, which is why 15x seems nice to me.

as far as the 16" barrel goes, i'm planning on putting an 762-SDN-6 silencer on it, which from what i've read, will increase the precision of the rifle.

+1 for the 2.5-10 NF and LaRue Tactical LT104 QD Mount. This combo should enable you to get the accuracy out of the system you are looking for in the DMR role.

A NXS 3.5-15 x 50 F1 would be better suited on an FNH MK 20 Mod 0 SSR (Sniper Support Rifle) whenever they become available to the general public....?

Enjoy your rifle!

Re: $2K scope for SCAR 17s - advice

You have a few options in front of you. 60-600 yds is easily accomplished with a 10x and below while still staying compact. Just remember that a scope is a mixture of compromises, and you need to decide where you are willing to make sacrifices in your selection and employment. Me personally I'll take a bit more weight when I'm not using the rifle in a CQB scenario to get more performance,

Look at the USO SN3 1.8-10x37 to stay compact, illuminated and FFP. Lightweight, look at Leupold 3-10x or NF 2.5-10x, lower cost and a very nice scope is the SWFA 3-9x. Others out there are the Vortex PST and IOR.

Out of all of those, the SN3 would be my choice if you want the most versatility and reticle choice, but it's at the upper fringe of your budget.

hm. okay, maybe the 2.5-10x24 NF is a good option. i just wish it had an FFP and a 15x...

but yeah, that's a very interesting option. thanks all for the ideas.

Re: $2K scope for SCAR 17s - advice

At 10x and under scopes I dont consider ffp as mandatory as the higher mag scopes.Under about 7x depending on the ret its very hard to use.Anything past 400yds or so I'll be using 10x anything under it doesnt matter much.Keep in mind I'm talking hitting steel and such.Get a mount that lets you run a RMR or T1 at a 45 degree offset and your bases are covered.

Also a 15x is way overkill for that platform IMO.

Re: $2K scope for SCAR 17s - advice

prefetch, How exactly do you want to run the rifle?

I know the scars are turning out to be very accurate rifles, but with the chrome lined barrels I don't view it as a true precision rifle.

I think you may be a little let down with a FFP scope that goes up to 15x as the reticle becomes small on the lower powers and that really adds time when shooting close up on low mag. If you are just looking to hit steel out to 600yds, a 10x scope will be plenty. I had a leupold 2.5x8x scope on my sdm ar for a time and had no problem hitting a 12"x12" steel diamond 675yds.

More mag is nice, but the increase in optic size just doesn't fit with what the scar 17 seems to be.
