Rifle Scopes 3-9x (or similar) Considerations

I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 that I'm considering putting on my Savage 17 HMR. It seems a perfect rimfire gun for shooting at paper. That said, I'm iffy on using a fixed power, especially one that high, for a potential hunting rifle (squirrels, ground hogs and the like). Tracking at closer ranges might be tough at 10x. It seems that some sort of variable power is in order. That said, I'd like a scope with a mildot and tactical turrets, though I'm not sure that I would need to do that much "clicking" and would likely be better suited to use holdovers at range.

Is there anything that one might recommend? I'm thinking somewhere around the $250-$300 mark.

That's true . . . I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks.

Got one I've used to various rifles, on my 308 currently. The parallex is goofy on the front but works like a charm. 6-24 can be shot close up maybe not 10 yards but 25 easy. Has reliable Mil-dot ranging at 10x. POI isn't changed with magnification. and clicks are easy heard and clear. Good quality for a cheaper price. People say Bushnell isn't that great but it's worth the money

I currently have 2 Bushnell scopes. One, 6-24x50, on my .308 that will be moving to a precision AR, and a 10x40 Tactical that I'm considering moving to my rimfire. I really like them. And if target shooting were the only shooting I want to do, the 10x is perfect. But for hunting, I want to dial it back a bit for better tracking. Hard to chase a squirrel down a branch at 10x.
