30.06 powder

New to this site. I have been loading my 30.06 using IMR4895. the problem is that with that powder I can not throw a consistent load with my RCBS powder throw. My question is what powder can I use to get consistency? is there a ball powder that will work in my powder throw. I hope some one can help me . Thank you

Hodgdon H-4895 is short grain and flows much better than IMR 4895. H-4895 would be my first choice. Varget will work pretty well also, except it's nearly impossible to find. IMR 8208XBR will work also it is just a hair faster than H-4895, also hard to find. Accurate XMR 4064 is short grained and will flow well in the powder hopper and works. It might be easier to find. Accurate 2495 is very similar to IMR 4895, but is long grained like the IMR 4895. Reloader 15 will also work and is short grained. All of the above powders I listed can be used in a M1 Garand.

I've used ball powders (H-335 & BLC-2), but they were very flashy. They worked, but I didn't care for them.

Is this for a bolt gun or for a M1 Garand? If you're loading for a bolt gun, there are other powders that will work and if you're going to use heavier bullets.

IMR 4064 is longer grained but works. I experimented with IMR 4064 and 8208 XBR and both throw about +/- 0.2 gr. The XBR does throw to a lower standard deviation but still has the extreme variance.

I've used a variety of powder measures over the years. When I competed in Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette, the Belding & Mull was the go to powder measure. I purchased a second one with the micrometer powder tube that was only used for smokeless powder. I have been using it with some stick powders and it is incredibly accurate and meters better than other measures I've used.

I failed to mention that Im loading for my 03a3 and my sako bolt 165 gr nossler ballistic tip. I thank you all for your help and will try some of these powders.

I experimented with IMR 4064 and 8208 XBR and both throw about +/- 0.2 gr.

I get the same metering with IMR 4064/4895. The accuracy (or velocity) "nodes" on IMR 30.06 loads are almost 1.0 grain wide, well within the ability of every powder meter on the market. If your pet load has to be exactly within .2gr then maybe you need to re-evaluate it.

for your 03a3 I would stick with the usual burn range suspects just like the garand. For your Sako I would go with 4064 and slower. A few ball powders to consider for your 03a3 that also work well in the garand would be W748 and AA2520. 8lb of W748 is available on several sites AA2520 really hard to find. I havent reloaded for the 03a3 and someone else may say its ok to go with slower powders but I still wouldn't load it as hot as the Sako.

That is what I was thinking. Not that I shoot my .30-06 a lot it would still be nice to hand load and seeing that I have a bit of RL-16 I think I’ll try working up a load.
