I am looking at ordering some Lapua projectiles and was wondering what experiences have been between 167 Scenars and 170 Lock-Base. I see the 170 has a nice bc, but can't find out much about it. Is the 170 finicky? It sounds like the 167 is more accommodating in terms of seating depth (mag length), and the 170 may like being pressed towards the lands like the Bergers. If I can get away with the 170's, I thing the bc would be nice compared to 168 SMK or 175 SMk. Any real experience here, or recommendations? I'm out of .30 projectiles, and have been using 168's, but was at a friends house and saw his 167's and they looked like Lapua put the effort in to them that they do their cases. I figure I can't hardly go wrong with them if I am ordering 1000, but want to make sure that I pick the more user-friendly of the two.

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

Honestly, the Scenars tend to be more jump tollerant. Some bullets dont mind the jump, but there is a magical distance to the lands you need to find and it always doesnt work with your OAL or desired velocity. Ask your buddy if you could try a few before you make the purchase for 1K to find out if they do or dont work for you.

Something else to look at, see below and then look at the price

Hornady 168gr A-MAX- BC .475
Lapua Scenar 167gr- BC .446

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

Gimpy,

The Lock Base line is an FMJ-BT design. It's also virtually the only true match grade FMJ on the market, not even remotely similar to the conventional FMJ designs that ape the standard military "ball" rounds. Good BC, but generally not quite as accurate as the Scenar, or the new Scenar L projectiles. Can't say just yet, but there's at least two new 30 cal designs that we'll be introducing at SHOT show next month. Might want to stay tuned for that, and I'll be happy to break the news as to what these new ones are, just soon as I get the okay from the Finns.

Let the final use be your guide here. Good, accurate shooting, the Lock Base will do well for you. But if all-out tack driving accuracy is what you're after, go with the Scenars.

Hope that helps!

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

Gimpy,

Depends entirely on what you're doing with it. In my Palma gun, I run our 155 Scenars, which are made specifically for this game. My main area of competition in High Power XC, shooting Service Rifles (ARs). There, I'm using our 77 grain Scenar, though I still have a fair supply of our 69 grain Scenar as well. Outstanding performers, and no reason the change.

In High Power Silhouette . . . I use Bergers. I shoot a 7mm BR for that game, and frankly, Lapua doesn't offer anything in 7mm right now that's suitable for this game. I'm hoping they'll recosnider, though, and add some 7mm projectiles to the Scenar line.

What specific application did you want to use these for?

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

Mostly punching paper. Will usually be out to 600, would like to go to 800 at times. I'm shooting an FN SPR and a Remington 5R, both 24" .308.

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

Can't go wrong with the 155 scenars and varget. Shooting out to 600 is a breeze if you do a proper work up. What length barrel and what twist?? I shoot them out of a 1:11.25 22" bartlein at 2880 fps with lapua brass, varget(45.5) and fgm 210m. At 2.815". Jumping them 40/1000". Best group to date was .174" 5 shot group at 100 yards during my load work up. As Kevin says go with the scenars

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

A little off topic but since Kevin is monitioring this I thought I would ask. Kevin are the 6.5 mm 139 grain Scenar L's going to be available for the upcoming season? I need to decide what to do with my 6.5 barrel sitting on the shelf and if the L's will be out I will go with another 6.5 x 55 AI and if they aren't I will go with another 6.5 x 47L to shoot 130 grain bullets.

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

They should be, and we're adding several new bullets to the Scenar L line. I've seen some of the proofs for the new catalog already, but will have to wait for Vegas and the SHOT show next month to actually see these. Unlike the earlier Scenar Ls, they're also adding a couple new ones that aren't in the standard Scenar line. Again, have to share a bit more about these once I know more. Stay in touch, and I'll be happy to keep you posted.

Kevin,

For Lapua .308 win Brass

How many time after reload that Lapua Brass should be case nk anneal?

If I do not make an anneal, how many time that can be reload?

Do the cleaning with ultrasonic will change or damage elastic of case nk?

Re: 30 cal Lapua Projectiles

Golfy,

Not to hijack the thread or let it get too far off track, but we don't acutally "recommend" annealing at all. We normally expect to see at least ten firings from our cases if they're used with normal (SAAMI or CIP spec) pressures, and not worked excessively during the reloading process. This is without annealing at all, at any point. That said, if done properly, annealing is good, and will help prevent cracked or split necks.

It's hard to set a particular number of firings, due to all the variables that come into play. Treat 'em right, don't abuse them and they'll usually go a long, long time. Run very high pressures, excessively expand or size the necks during the reloading process, or use them in guns that are by nature very hard on brass, and that resonable life can shorten dramatically. Sounds like you're on track, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll do just fine.
