Hey there, folks. Just thought I'd post my mashup build. I have a Savage short action laying around and decided to put together a short/handy rifle. I'm getting my first suppressor (9mm) in a month or so which is rated for .300 BLK subs so I went with that calibre. Figured the supers would be adequate for white tail as well so I figure this calibre would do nicely overall. Also wanted to keep the whole thing under $1k. Here she is:

Savage short action (no special trigger)
Accustock (take off)
McGowen 16" heavy barrel, .300 BLK chamber, threaded 5/8x24
EGW base
Warne Maxima QD high rings
Minox 3-9x50 ZA3

The sling doesn't exactly go with the synthetic stuff but it's hands down my favourite. Was a gift from my grandpa who had it for around forty years and is comfortable as hell.

Right around 10 pounds loaded and about 34" overall as you see it. I figure if an action is worth $200, I'm in it for a total of $900 including the die rental for swapping the barrel myself.

Sub loads are indeed subsonic and group around 1.5 MOA. With 147gr supers I'm getting around 1 MOA. Just thought I'd share. I am DEFINITELY a fan of short rifles, now. :)

I have noticed a few of these subsonic silenced guns. What is the effective range of these guns? What barrel twist would one recommend? I am guessing > 1 MOA is average group size for these guns and am guessing the slower speeds contributes to these groups being a bit more spread out? Could one expect to get tighter groups or is this about as good as it gets?

Thanks.

1:8 is the standard twist usually, effective range is subjective. trajectory is the killer of the cartridge. energy wise it looses very little and maintains velocity quite aways out there. (with the heavy 220+ pills) generally 300yds is pushing it based solely on trajectory. for example a 240gr smk @ 1050 has 585lb/ft energy at the muzzle at 500yds it still is going 920ft/sec with 450 lb/ft energy. however with a 75yd zero it's dropped 360" @ 500yds

as for accuracy it takes alot of trial and error to get you SD down low. it's not uncommon to have 80-100ft/sec spreads with this cartridge (in an ar at least) opening up the primer hole, using fast powders, hand weighing charges, sorting cases ect... it's possible to get sub MOA groups.
