I was investigating building an AR10 in 300wsm when I came across information on the 300 Rem Short Acrtion Ultra Mag. The round "seems" to be a better design than the 300 wsm but now appears all but vanished. Im curious as to why it didnt catch on....poor marketing, poor "real world" performance"....whats the skinny on it? You all far more in the know than I am so I figured I would ask.

The 300saum and 7saum limit your ability to use standard ar10 magazines with anything other than short light bullets. Poor marketing is the reason for the lack of SAUM popularity. DPMS made ar10s in 300saum. The SAUM case has more brass in the bottom of the case than the wsm does, which makes it a superior case for running in an AR.

The Cheapest way to get into shooting a wsm is to buy a complete upper from KAK. Next would be a Noreen bn36. The proprietary magazines limits you to light bullets in 300winmag. The 7rem mag really is the better option. I had a bn36 with a 300winmag barrel and a 7mm rem mag barrel. Hand loading 7mm rem mag with 168 grain bullets got half moa groups at 2900fps with reloadable brass.

I have built 3 ar10s in 6.5 saum and in my opinion is the best magnum chambering for the existing standard ar10 magazines, upper/lower/barrel/handgaurd/tunable buffer options. Running 142 smks at 3200fps out of 22inch barrel with low recoil from an 8 pound rifle is amazing.

if you want magnum performance from a semi your best options are the Nemo Arms Omen series, or the Sword International options.

both cost a pretty penny, but they are designed to last and have very high quality barrels and are all hand built/fitted.

I haven’t fired an Omen series, but I do have a little trigger time behind a .300 Norma Mag Mjolnir, and the thing is pretty damn glorious

For the 8 grand I just got a semi auto 50cal. Ammo is cheaper than the 338 or 300normamag
Accuracy difference is huge though. even being as precise as possible the action types of the less expensive semis murders your expected spread. (short recoil, etc)

the only semi I know of that retains a decent accuracy rating is the Sero GM6 Lynx, and those come in at about $14-16k (and are a personal grail gun for me lol)

The Omen and Mjolnir are rated at sub-MoA when they leave the factory, so as long as the shooter does their part. Hard to Argue with 14 rds of 300WM or 10 338LM
