300 RUM.... Now what?

I just got a Remington 700P in 300RUM. I got it for basically 200 and I am best friends with the owner. It has been broke in properly then put away for 5 years. I want to be able to shoot 1000+ yards eventually as my situation allows ( not many long ranges in north Texas). I also want to pull off long range hog kills as well as coyotes at our hunting lease to help out the deer pop.
Now on to my questions.
Should I just scope it( came with badger ordinance 20moa rail) and get to practicing?
Can I use the action for a 7 rem mag build(don't want to do an edge build)?
How are these hs precision stocks? Seems ok in the hands
What are some good starter loads?

I'd just work up a load for it using 210 or 215 Bergers, 208 Amax or similar and shoot it. It will perform out to 1000 with out any issues. Once you wear the factory barrel out, come back with your questions once you have a better understanding of what you want the rifle to do.

Is it possible to use the action for a 7 rem mag build. That's what I would rather have but the 300 was just tossed in my lap so I couldn't pass on it. I would have to spend money on a muzzle break so if the action is useable and all I needed to do is re barrel I'd rather put that money to that option. But if its not then I will put glass on top and muzzle break it and just plan on new barrels every so often.

I didn't realize they chambered the 700P in 300 RUM. I have shot a Sendero in 300RUM and it is brutal to shoot.

He bought this after we got back from Iraq in 2007 so it was a while ago. They may not make em in 300 rum any longer.

As for the brutal part... I am putting a break on it if it stays a 300RUM so that's not gonna be an issue.

I have one of these, The cartridge was used with good success in the earlier days of one mile shooting using 180 gr Swift Scirocco bullets. Mine shoots really good for a factory barrel. Get a brake or pay the price. I can only shoot about 20 rounds before I start loosing it.

If you have the time, interest, and $$$ I would get that thing re-barreled in a caliber that is a bit less expensive/noisy/punishing to shoot for your intended purposes.

I also have a 700 p in 300 RUM. I put a brake on it and a few other things but I would not call it an "all day at the range" type of caliber. While the price was good, the 300 RUM is way overkill for hogs and coyotes. How many rounds did the previous owner put down the barrel? Depending upon how he/she loads you may get 2-3 thousand out of it before you need to rebarrel it. I for one like the 700p platform and shoot very well with it but YMMV. I use 180 scirocco's for my reloads. The 300 RUM is very comparable to a .338 lapua depending upon what bullet and weight you select. One thing though, with a brake they are extremely loud and if you take it hunting you need to wear ear protection.

FIL has a Sendero. I hated shooting it, and I shot a 300WinMag in the military.

As far as the round, it does everything you mentioned quite well. Will be overkill for smaller 4 legged stuff, but you will definitely have room to work up to as far as hunting.

I would at the very minimum get a brake for it. Which HS Stock is it? Just as long as it's not the shit Hogue stock, you will be fine unless you need to adjust your LOP for it.

If you can handle the caliber and reload for it, leave it as is and go shoot it.

Hairball: I am not gonna use it as a hunting rifle but if a hog is in my fields or a yote trots out I wouldn't hesitate. As for the hearing... Since this will never see duties as a true hunting rifle I will always have ear pro in. And third, he put around 60 rounds total through the pipe. This thing is like new. So 2-3 k rounds sounds nice I've been seeing some advertise only 1000!

Kollman: as for re barreling.... This is what I'm really interested in. Can I use this action for a 7mag build?

German: it's the standard aluminum bedded hs stock that comes on the 700P models. Like I said though this is not a gun I want to use as a dedicated hunting rig. ( I got a Mathews and a 270 for that) I just want to challenge myself as far as distance goes.
I have been shooting for a very long time in and out of the Marine Corps and I want to gain confidence out past the 600yard range and then beyond when I can make time to go to a long distance type range. (Any tips for finding one around DFW Area of Texas?)

I am no gunsmith, so I can't answer that for you... Call a good one in your neck of the woods and ask, or hit up one of the several good shops here on the 'Hide.

I own a Sendero with a JP Enterprises recoil eliminator. It is a pleasure to shoot. The recoil can be compared to a .308 model seven or .308 T3 Lite. I would not hesitate to send 50 rounds down range in a sitting.

I have a pain killer on my .338 LM. Would gladly let you pull the trigger a few times on it so that you can see how effective a break that it is. As for long range around Dallas, You can get 500 at Top Gun up in Leonard or go to Tac Pro in Mingus for 1000. If North East Texas Tactical can get through their suit, Kaufman will have 1500 to stretch your legs on.

Awesome to know there's options. Where might I look to have the pain killer break installed/ buy one? I would love to shoot a couple rounds off that beast! I'm transitioning out of the Marine Corps and will be home in Ft Worth come October so I'm just excited as can be. I'm glad I will still have places to shoot that aren't 6 hrs away

You can get the Pain Killer directly from Allen Precision's web site. My smith just recently moved out from the area so I don't have anyone local specific to recommend at the time. Sure there are plenty in the area though.

I have great success with my Rem 300rum SPS using 208amax, and 93.0gr of H1000, it sucks to shoot without a brake, and takes its' toll on optics and mounts if they are not up to the task.

It sounds like you really want a 7rmag, you could buy a takeoff new/near new factory (Sendero or ?) barrel for probably around $100??, swap the barrels for now, then decide if you want to continue with the 300rum or not.

Thanks for the reference to Painkiller muzzle breaks. I recently picked up a Rem 700 Sendero in 338 RUM. Haven't shot it yet but it came with a factory muzzle break. The pain killer looks much better.

I agree that 300 win mag is a better choice over 300 RUM because of ammo availability. But in the 338 realm, the RUM is one of the cheaper ones.

And yes, jd, you should be able to use the action and bolt for just about any magnum build.
