I just purchased a Sandstorm and was originally thinking of going with a 308 but after watching every youtube video available I am contemplating going with a 300 whisper. I want quiet!!! I have a small game farm and the hogs are trying to overrun it and I’m trying to keep the deer from panicking as much. I prefer a bolt action platform. I do not reload, yet, and have found factory subsonic loads for both.
Any information, pros/cons, etc would be greatly appreciated.

If you just want want to be as quiet as possible, then get a .300 blackout. If you want to be capable of doing any actual shooting then go with a .308. You can shoot everything from subsonic all the way out to 1,000+ yards with supersonics.

Ditto on the 308. If you're going to have only one gun, definitely go 308. You've got the full bang ammo for real long range work and enough energy to put something down hard. The occasional requirement of subsonic work is easily handled/available 308 sub ammo.

I've got three different versions of the above mentioned cal's. 7.62x39 in a suppressed AR upper, 300 BLK in a suppressed AR upper and a AR10 in 308. In tight, under a 100 yards, dead is dead; but with hogs you might have to pass on 300 yard shots with either of the two short rounds. Where as full bang 308 will hammer their ass. The bonus of a can on full bang ammo is no hearing protection required and a much reduced noise signature.

I'll warn you, cans/suppressors are addictive! I've got 5 of them now. I have a small farm and am constantly fighting the 'yotes/foxes/cats eating up all my birds and goats. So I'm routinely out whacking things on the quiet.

Also, like earlier mentioned, watch your twist rate for stabilizing the sub ammo, long heavy & slow bullets need to be spun up pretty fast or you'll get shit accuracy and key hole problems. In 308, 1:8 or 1:9 is even better for the big 220grn bullets.

My two cents worth.

Good Luck with it,
Breeze

Oh yeah, on "quiet" with hogs, don't worry about it. It doesn't really matter how quiet your shot is, when that bullet hits the first hog and makes that smack noise....they're going to scatter like a full bang shot went off. Don't think they going to wait around for follow up shots. Thats where the AR10 and othter semi-auto's come into their own. When hunting groups of hogs on seek and destroy missions, multiple fast follow up shots on scattering hogs is king.

+1 The best of both worlds.
