I am new to the reloading world. I am a severely disabled combat veteran from the special operations community. So I live on a too small military disability pension. It makes it hard to get the things I need to participate and enjoy the only physical activity that I can still participate in, shooting my rifles from the bench. I can't really walk anymore because of my disabilities so I am a bench guy. Well as we all know the high end match ammunition is super expensive itself then the darn shipping cost is cost prohibitive unless you're buying a case at least. So I bought an RCBS rock chucker press and some super good dies for my 6.5 Creedmoor and my .300 Win Mag. I have the powder and primers that I want to use for the 6.5CM figured out and purchased.

But for the .300 Win Mag I haven't figured out what I want to use especially the primers. Can you experienced reloaders give me your recommendations for primers for the .300 Win Mag? I was thinking of either Federal Gold Medal magnum large rifle or maybe the CCI magnum primers. What do you recommend? As for powder, I think I am going to go with Vihtavuori as I am using for my 6.5CM and .308. But am not sure on the Win Mag.

I personally use CCI 250 primers exclusively for my 300 win mag and have never had an issue with them. As for powders it will really depend on what type of bullet you plan on using, I use H1000 but I only shoot the heavy bullets in my rifle.

This is a good site to use as a reference depending on the bullets.

Go with CCI 250 primers as CMP said, nothing wrong with gold medal primers but you have better luck winning the lotto than finding 215 GM primers in stock, and for powder what bullet weight I am using RL26 with Berger 230 gr OTM's.

Both of you fellows have good information. One type load that I am going to work up may sound stupid to you guys. But a lot of my shooting is done at 100 & 200 yards as that is all my private club has. They are more in love with the shotgun guys so that is where the club spends it's money. Because of the short ranges for most of my shooting and the fact that my disabilities can't take recoil very well at all (that's why I'm having the .300 built to weigh 16-17.25 lbs with a scope) I found a couple of loads that are more of a warm .308 load than .300 Win Mag, using 175 grain SMK bullets. Sort like shooting .38 Specials through your .357 Magnum to reduce both shooter and firearm wear and tear.

SKOOKUM - after getting email that you had commented I tried to reply but your post isn't showing up. In regard to what bullets I will be using see mouse load below:

I run heavies 99% of the time, and Retumbo with Rem 9 1/2Ms are my go to. For lighter bullets it's hard to beat RL22. It's what I used to duplicate the A191 (M248mod0) load.

My 700/300 weighs 16.4lbs unloaded and still beats the shit out of me without a can. Especially from a bench where I find it harder to get the rifle shouldered properly. If you're not running a brake or suppressor, consider it.

Resist going too light on your load. you want good case fill and run a real risk of going overpressure with poor case fill. You're better off going to slower powder and getting over 60+ gr. in. I prefer well over. Something like RL19, RL22, H1000, Retumbo, N170 can get a 175 to ludicrous speed.

Yeah I had replied but while I was typing, the next post negated what I had said. I was giving recommendations for heavies, but you are running 175"s.

With 175's in 300win your options are legion. You can run reduced loads with H4895, you can run a little hotter with the 4831's and 4350's...or you can make'em scream with something in the H1000 burn rate.

If you are target/steel shooting out to only 200-300 yds, I would stick to 6.5 CM. Less recoil, less powder and cheaper brass and bullets.

300 WM really shines when going past 800 yds. But if you are dead set, then fed 215 or cci 450s are fine. No need to spend extra on the
Match versions.
