I might start a new post on the 'realistic' $2000 300 win mag hypothetical and see what folks come up with. Those posts can be fun.

well since this has been resurrected, lets give this a start:

I recently ordered an accuratized SS Rem LA for:

550
380 remage barrel and nut
120 trigger and pins
260 B+C A2 stock
110 base and rings
410 weaver 3-15 x 50 scope
100 ptg DBM
90 magazine

if I did not have the action / barrel nut wrenches, that would have been 160

I had a Rem 700 in 300 WM that I sold as it was about 1 1/2 MOA gun. I will buy back in to a better platform in 300 WM at some point. I've got several hundred rounds of once fired 300 WM brass until then. Some great looking rifles in this thread.

.300 I've been slowly putting together. Still need to thread my bolt and cerakote the rifle. Not sure if I want to cerakote it myself or just send it out to someone to do it.

Scope rings need to be taller, although the bell doesn't touch the barrel, so I guess they are technically fine, but I don't like not having space to allow for the scope caps. I could sell it. Probably only because I haven't shot it yet.

I don't see many 300 win mags on here or for sale.

I was thinking about getting one with a brake as my first jump into the long range tactical market.

What am I missing? SHould I be looking elsewhere for 'better than 308' ballistics?

Thanks Gents.

Dave

Dave I didn't read through the whole thread but here's my take on it. I had a 338 Lapua That about broke the bank every time I would go out shooting. I loved the rifle but it just wasnt in a 27 year olds best interest to be dropping that kind of money just to shoot it. I had already had several 300 Winchester Magnum's before and Had taken them out to 1200 yards. This was with the 700 Police and 5R. Fast forward... I got to looking at the ballistics of the 230 grain Berger hybrid and at a high rate of speed was slightly comparable to the .338 out to 1500 yards. So i had a trued 700 action built on the 30 inch Broughton 5C barrel with a Thruster brake and an AICS and had it throated Specifically for the 230s. I'm running it just under 3000 ft./s with Retumbo and I couldn't be more satisfied. Gotta love the power of that round!

That thing is insanely classy looking. I'd leave it bare if it were mine.

Who's barrel is that and what's the contour?

Also, who build the rifle?

Nicely done sir.

Best,
Justin

I have been thinking of getting one and it has been good to look at all the sweet pics to get ideas.. After seeing a 20 inch one.. It makes me ask how short can you go before you lose to much velocity?

I have always been a fan of short guns because i like the maneuverability and always plan on having a suppressor to run so that is going to add a little to the over all length.

One thing that i have realized in my short time of precision shooting is that bbl length more or less depends on your application of the rifle. I have read several articles that state that they actually gained a little accuracy with a 20 in bbl once they cut it down but at the same time they lost a little velocity and distance. Some articles you read state they are still shooting 1/4 moa at 100 yards and are winning matches at 300 to 900 yard targets while at the same time competing against shooters that have 26" bbls. Imho, you cant go wrong with the 20" bbl as well as it fits your needs and application.
