Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation
Barreled action came with 40-rounds of SWA 220-gr SMK loads, and they shot Ok - sub-moa, but very hot ~ 3000-fps. I was planning on using the Berger 210-gr VLDs since my buddy was having good luck with them, and I wanted the rifle to double as a hunting rig for Elk.
Anyhow, I drank the 208-gr Amax cool-aid, and never turned back. When I first started load developement I was getting frustrated because nothing I did would result in very good groups, just barely sub-moa. Then I hit that sweet spot using 75-gr of H1000 and an OAL of 3.60, which gave me a slight bullet jump. If I do my part, the rifle will do 1/4" groups and I even printed a few 1/4" groups at 200-yards. Initial chrono readings were 2830-fps, but now that I have a few hundred rounds down the tube, that same load is now over 2850-fps. I checked the numbers last week with my 338 Surefire can on it, and they were moving as high as 3000-fps with the can.
One thing I may suggest for you, if you plan on shooting multiple rounds over a course of lets say less then 5-min., I'd suggest you go with a heavier profile barrel. With the Sendero profile barrel you will experience barrel heating causing stringing. If it's a hunting rig, then the Sendero profile is a good choice.
