So I've never loaded for the 300 win mag and I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I'm gonna ask anyhow. It simply uses the same 30cal bullet as say a 308, correct? I've got a bunch of bullets and wanna use em for what's gonna be my new hunting rig! Thanks for any help and yes I was to lazy to search, so flame on!

Also anybody got a good recipe for a 175gr hunting vld? It's gonna run in a basically stock savage. I may do an aftermarket sporter or mid type contour barrel later to help with accuracy after heat sets in!
Thanks, Jason

Re: 300WM question.....probably a dumb one too!

Yes, any .308 would do. Some say it is light for a 1:10 twist, but I have had good success with 168gr Amax accuracy-wise. 175gr is a good weight for the 300 win as a hunter. IMR 4831 is a good powder for that weight. I would start at 70 grains and work up since hodgdon only shows the 175 smk on their website.

When you start to see the primers get ridges where it is expanding into the firing pin channel or rounds aren't extracting cleanly, don't load any hotter.

I figured I'd start with imr 4831, since that's what I used in my 7mag and I still have some. I really got to find out what twist rate this barrel is. I'll know tomorrow when I get a look at it, since its a used rifle. Hoping maybe it will be 1-10 and a heavy shorter, but I'm betting, from pics as seller doesn't know much about twist rate and such just shoots gun, it will be a typical sporter and maybe I can even find out what model before I buy. Thanks for the info.

I am using the imr 4831 for my 300 works really well shooting 190gr pills. Currently working up a load for the 230s. Good luck
