Tryin to decide between the 2 calibers..which one has the better ballistics in terms of max effective range and barrel life....? thanks!

Re: .300wsm vs. 7mmwsm

Come on CST, you should know better. 7WSM/SAUM ass spanks any 30 cal offering in the ballistics dept. Barrel life....slight edge to 30cal. But you can take that edge back by having your barrel melonited. Any of the 7 mags, wether short or full, are hard on the throat, they move the throad forward at an alarming rate. If you are not chasing lands, then its all good, but I would still have the barrel melonited after shooting 10 rounds for break in.

give me some numbers...we talking below or beyond 1500yards for the 7mm..I know the 300 is pushing it at 1200-1300yards. and barrel life...we talking 3000rounds or less for the 7mm

Re: .300wsm vs. 7mmwsm

According to JBM, my 300wsm pushing 208s at 2850ish stays supersonic to roughly 1600 yards. I've rang 12" x 12" steel at a mile at Thunder Valley. This is out of a factory 26" Remington 700 sps-v.

27 MOA to 1000 yards, approx 75.25 MOA to 1760.

I've only got 500 rounds down the tube so far, so I can't comment on barrel life...yet. After talking to Rodent about his 300wsm, I'm only betting on 2000-2500 rounds before a re-barrel is needed.

Right about 3k rounds and counting with my 7mm Magnum. I want to see if I could hit at least 3500 rounds. I am thinking it will do it.

I stay supersonic past 1600 yards with 162 A-Max's, over 1800 yards with 180 Bergers. But the real question is, how well will a 30 cal do compared to a 7 fighting wind.

30 > 7. I wish. Lol Everybody knows that 30 cals are about the biggest turds of all. I was just stating what mine does. Looks like my load at 1k with a 10mph wind is 6.0 MOA.

Re: .300wsm vs. 7mmwsm

I have a .264 Win Mag getting ready to be rebarreled (about shot out) and was really debating the same. Especially since I shot Doc Sues's (Sam's) Suppressed 300WM and then won a 300 Win Mag. SAS suppressor at Reade : )

In the end, I settled on a 7mm WSM. I'll still suppress it and probably keep it short 21" to 22". I already own the reamer and throater and the round itself is pretty impressive. I had to have some steel plates welded up when a short mag running 162 A-max's blew right through at 400 yards. Now it was only hardox 400 1/4 inch but at 300 yards a 300 Win Mag was only denting it. I was really surprised it punched through - a lot tougher of a combination than I thought.

Good luck and post what you deicide on.

Re: .300wsm vs. 7mmwsm

To the OP, also consider 7SAUM instead of WSM. It uses less powder, gives you better barrel life and still pushes the 180's at 2950FPS. And its much easier to neck down Norma 300SAUM brass to 7SAUM than it is to neck down Norma 300WSM to 7WSM.

I wish I had gone SAUM instead of WSM when I was doing my build. I also wish I had my barrel melonited, but thats another thread.
