Guys,

I have a FN SCAR 17 that I did a form 1 on and had cut to CQC length (13"). I am curious if any of you have played with shorter barrel .308s, and what kind of muzzle velocities you got from them, as well as what loads it preferred. This rifle is a 1:12 twist, and it shoots many different loads/weights good, but loves the 155 grain Tap and 168 grain Fed Match.

I know some of you have SBR bolt guns and even SBR auto loaders, with the shorter barrel, what weight/type bullet would be most idea for shooting out to 700 yards. I have shot it at 500 at it is a hammer (for a battle rifle) at that distance; just trying to gather opinions as to what to start with for reloads.

Thanks in advance Guys

Does anyon have any info on this, I was gonna post a new thread but basically im looking for the same info, I would like to see real world numbers on velocities for a 13" configuration.

Good article! im sure a member here has chronoed one. Would love to see some 1st hand info from an owner of a scar 17 cqc. There was a discussion on the old site but it was basically people giving there 2 cents on how its neutered but no data or 1st hand expiereice. I understand there was special ammo devloped for this configuration wich id love some load data to match, but before i file for another can and a sbr stamp id love to see how viable it is w/ average ammo (ex fgmm 168, m11lr etc). Not interested in hearing the warrents of not cutting it or reasining behind it. Just looking to see some fps real world data. Anyone?

Folks usually talk about poor terminal performance from 308 lengths under 16" and reference the use of loads that were developed around 24" SAAMI test barrels. Your best bet is to use ammo that's been optimized for short barrels.

130 gr SOST is the ammo that was made by ATK for the MK17 SCAR. It runs 2,700+ fps from that length. Terminal performance and barrier blind capability are good, but penetration depths exceed 18" in gel (it was intentionally designed to do that). Barnes also makes a 110 gr 308 bullet just for SBR's that can be pushed to near 5.56 velocities from a short gun.

The one worth waiting for is from ATK. They've been working on an optimized SBR duty load that will meet or exceed all FBI protocol requirements from 12" - 16" guns. The final weight is still subject to change, but it currently sits at 140 gr. During their last round of testing, it retained better velocity out to 1,200 yards than their 168 gr Gold Dot from a 16" barrel. It was supersonic to 805 yards from that barrel length.

My only concern with the SCAR in a 13" configuration is the slow twist. A 1:8" twist would be far more ideal for such a setup.
