Re: 308 Lapua, or match prepped LC match brass
A buddy of mine cleaned out his garage and found a three cases (420 rounds each) of 7.62x51 ball ammo that he couldn't use, so he gave that to me along with about 1000 once fired cases. I cleaned and sorted through all the brass. There were about 400 pieces of various years of LC match cases in small lots, and about 600 of the LC 66 match cases. I kept the large lot of LC66 match and paid the other brass forward to another fellow who needed some.
I use Lapua cases for my Grendels, and generally, all I have to do is uniform the flash holes as there is quite a bit of variance in the size of the flash holes. After 5 loadings or so then I turn the case necks. I didn't know if I should sell of the LC66 match cases and buy Lapua, or just do the work on the LC66 and shoot it...hence my question.
I have both a gas gun, and a bolt gun in 7.62x51/308, so the brass gets used in both rifles.
Currently, I'm running some military cases that I did all the match prep on, and they weigh the same as FC match cases. Loads in both the military cases and the FC match cases show that I got really lucky because they both shoot the same charge of powder to the same point of impact at both 100 and 500 yards.
My experience doing detailed prep work on ball ammo cases, then sorting by weight gives really good performance in both accuracy, and longevity. And the cases last a very long time. The primer pockets seem to stay tight for many, MANY loadings.
I was trying to find out which way would be most cost effective. LC match cases just don't seem to bring all that much money, and I think I would still end up having to put out another 50 cents per case to buy the Lapua cases after selling the LC match cases.
My guess is that it will be most cost effective to do the work on the LC cases, rather than selling them, just to buy the Lapua cases. I like Lapua cases, I just don't know if that would be the most cost effective way to go in view of the above..
