308 loads for PRS

I noticed you had one scheduled before the Mrs. filled the day.

I do have base access and I’ve been shooting the SMGC matches for the last couple months.

I’ll keep you guys in mind for March 22nd!

We had one yesterday (it was pushed one weekend earlier due to some conflicts with a National level pistol tournament). Next match is on the 22nd of March as well/. Also, Camp Pendleton (if you have base access) is hosting a two day event (one day clinic, next day match) on the 14-15th of March. It is being run by the Santa Margarita Gun Club.

I have also noticed some velocity difference however, living in southern california we do not have temp‘s that swing that much.
That's kinda funny because I live in SoCal. But I'm in the mountains really close to Wrightwood, so @ 5000ft elevation we see temps from 6* - 100*. So I'm saving my Varget for the two day match's & will run 4064 now for the rest. It's mostly in our heads anyway with the SD's & ES anyway. The Jan. Boarderwars match @ Pala was the mid 70'S with the mid 20's sd's and I still did top tac & top 10 overall with a tough field. But this game is mostly mental @ this point for me & 4-6 sd's just give me that warm & fuzzy feeling lol. BTW if I want 2600 fps I'll just save my time & run GMM. 700-800 it's less important but with the old 308 out past 800 stuff gets tough without good #'s.

Thanks. Is there one for the pendleton matches as well? I already have base access. Just not familiar with the matches out there

Here's the website: https://www.smgunclub.org/

Ask for Mike to add you to the tactical matche news letter/e-mails. I'll probably try and RO the 15th of Mar match (same for SDPRC on the 22nd). It'll be another month or two before I'm ready to get back into competition (and it'll probably be pretty ugly the first couple matches).

@MarinePMI I’ll see you there!

Sounds good. Thanks.

Just an FYI, Alliant AR Comp has a lot faster burn rate than Varget or even IMR4064 . Closer to IMR8208 XRB BTW.
I'm curious about burn rate comparisons. AR-Comp is listed as a "Medium slow burning powder" but I can't find it listed on any of the Burn Rate Charts I've found. Varget is just slightly below middle on the slower side for burn rate. Would love so see a chart that shows the relationship between Varget and AR-Comp.
Varget has been hit or miss to find but my local reloader shop did get some one pound bottles in so made the road trip and picked up several pounds to experiment with.

Still looking for a burn rate chart that includes AR-Comp and still no-go. Only thing that pops up is an article from 2011 with an alleeged quote from Aliant.

Burn Rate Like Varget: Though this is a reformulation of Reloder 15, the burn rate of AR-Comp is slightly faster than Reloder 15. Alliant told us: “Reloder 15 is slightly slower, in burn rate, than Varget. The new AR-Comp, with the enhancements, ended up slightly faster than Reloder 15, so it is now very close to Varget in burn rate”. This is the result of the “tuning” of the powder to be much less temp-sensitive.

I used 44.2gr Varget with 178gr ELD-M's for a while (3-4 PRS Matches and 600-800 ish rounds) and they always gave me about .5-.75" groups at 100yds and 2700fps out of my 20" RPR. I just recently switched to 45gr Varget and 175gr SMK's because I get 2750FPS and they just shoot ragged holes, consistent .3-.6" groups. For the extra speed of the SMK's I actually don't get any pressure where as the ELD-M's I did and it was kind of hard on brass. Never had any issues with either round.

Peter, good info, Thanks as that's the kind of bullets and loads I'm looking to work up. Helps shorten the ladder loads by at least starting close to where I need to be.

AR Comp is #91 between Ramshot TAC and IMR 8208.

FYI, lot's of the loads I've seen mentioned in this thread are redline loads. Be careful, don't chase speed. Loads at the top of the pressure curve will bite you eventually, one way or another.

Any of you tried Barnes 175gr Match Burners?

I am currently using them for F/TR but looks like it would be good for PRS.

I have had consistent sub 1/4 MOA groups at 100 yds

Savage 12 FV 26" varmint contour BBL
175 gr Barnes Match Burner
44 gr IMR 4064
Win Brass
S&B LR Primers
COAL 2.91
2750 fps

168 gr a max
42 gr imr 3031
3.8 in c.o.l.
2700 fps 18 inch ar 10
Vortex diamond back tactical 4x16x50
5 shots in one hole at 100
Hornady brass
Winchester large rifle primers
Its $400 for the first year and 300 every consecutive year. For my range it does go out to 1000 yards. I just have not bit the bullet yet.

Wow....This was a blast from the past when I saw a notice pop of for a thread I was following.
As a follow up to what I ended up with for load I'm attaching a couple of my test targets. I do a full work up with my Labradar data along with the target to show SD, velocity, load data and group. I don't mess with chasing zero until I settle in on a load and then tweak zero setting. Attaching a couple of my data sheets for reference.
