Getting some opinions which is better for 700-1000 yards. We’re not talking about taking down game, just punching holes in paper.
308 or 300 WIN Mag which is better

Of the 2, 308. Recoil is significantly reduced causing more accurate shots. Also,way cheaper to shoot.
There is forever the trade offs of recoil, expense, barrel life, velocity, ballistic coefficient, etc.
.308 is a good compromise on all these. 300 win is a higher performer in all regards, along with more recoil, money, barrel changes, size/weight, etc.
For a beginer, the .308 makes more sense and will produce a more experienced shooter and better wind-caller over time. Then, stepping up to higher BC/velocity platforms makes sense, to me anyway.

I have both. 308 is much better for punching paper. If you don't care about barrel life, won't hunt with the rifle, and reload you may want to look at a 6MM or a 6.5MM. These cartridges shoot much flatter than the 308 and are good choices for longer range shooting.
308 is easier to learn on, cheaper to shoot, lighter recoiling and has longer barrel life. 300 win mag is harder to shoot for long periods of time and is more expensive to shoot, however the ability to throw 210-240 gn pills gives you much more forgiveness on wind calls without using ultra-premium bullets. I would say go 308 in a long action, then rebarrel and upgrade to the 300 Win if you want to reach out past 1000.
So what round would you use to push out to a 1000 with a 308? Right now I'm Running a AI AE Mrk III 308 with a Nightforce. This gun is just under 1/2 MOA
Are you speaking of bullet grains, or is it still calibers?
Give some research time into the calibers in the 6 range if all your doing is looking to punch paper.
As an example, the 6.5-284 can go past a 1000 yards.
Sorry, yes bullet grains. Just looking for some suggestions. I have access to Black Hills bonded 308 180 grn which is great for 800 yards and in. once you go beyond that it’s a crap shoot. So I’m just looking to see what works for everyone else here.
I use 175 SMKs over 44 gns of Varget out of a 28 in. barrel. I shot a 20 inch group in gusting wind at my last F class match.
What about the do-all cartridge in between those-- the 30-06? I don't have experience with it myself, but I have seen several people note that it can be easily be loaded down to near .308 specs or up near 300 WM.
...you can easily swap in a 6.5 CM barrel if you're looking for more performance than your .308. It'll still be cheaper to shoot than the 300 WM and give you better performance than the .308. I like my 308 shooting FGMM 175s out to about 900. The 6.5 will tighten up your groups on paper and handle the wind better.
My .308 has worked out to 1200 yards.

Stock Rem 700 PSS action and barrel. Manners T4A, Vortex Viper PST 6-24s FFP with 20 MOA base.
At 1200 I had to hold over 0.5 mil at max scope come up.
I would like to build a 300 WinMag to reach out further than 1200 yards.

+1 I was in your situation and got the 300 win mag (unbraked). If I could do it all over again, I'd get the .308 and then buy a 300 win mag/.338 lapua once I got it down. I really wish I got the .308 to start with...
