Anyone have some pet loads they would be willing to share?

My setup,

Remington 700
.308
1000 yard rifle
4-16x50 scope(if that even matters)

I and still building my first 1000 yard rifle and am looking for a good starting point of a load for it.

Thanks for any and all help

Re: .308 Pet load

Case: WIN
Primer: CCI
Powder: Varget
Charge: 47.8 gr
Bullet: 155 Scenar
OAL: 2.943

Caution: 1) work up slowly from 45.0 or lower watching pressure signs along the way. This one is on the edge of sane pressures. 2) 2.943 is a single feed only OAL that is 0.015 from the lands in MY gun. The load is already compressed at 46.5gr, with a drop tube you might be able to get the bullet seated at 2.820.

Re: .308 Pet load

MitchAIsup,

Curious how much bullet you still have in the neck at 2.943 OAL with the 155 scenar. I recently got into 308 and measured my chamber on my remington and found more freebore than I anticipated. COAL of 2.951 which seems pretty close to you. I would like to seat closer to the lands but didn't want to get too far out.

I am currently running:

Case: Win
Primer: CCI BR-2
Powder: Varget
Charge: 44.5 gr
Bullet: 168 gr SMK
OAL: 2.895

The load seems quite accurate out of my gun and is far better than the factory loads I started with but I would like experimenting with a larger OAL getting closer to the lands if possible but didn't know if there was a limit to how far I could come out before the round became too fragile.

Re: .308 Pet load

175gr smk or nosler cc
44-45gr varget

Since your rifle is factory stock it will have a sloppy-long chamber, check it first and then seat to your coal of choice ymmv

Re: .308 Pet load

Like always you guys amaze me. Ask a question and get respectful informative replies.

Thanks so much for the info, I think I have a good idea what I am going to start with.

Can someone help point me in the correct to find the true COAL for my rifle?

Re: .308 Pet load

Savage 10FCP
24" Barrel

Lapua Cases
45.5gr Varget
155gr Hornady A-Max
Federal LRM Primer - GM210M
COAL 2.899

These shoot amazing all th way out 1000yds
1/8" consistent groups @ 100yds
4" 5 shot group @ 1000 yds last trip out.

Shot 3 deer with them a few weeks back at about 85 yds and damage was very impressive. The exit wounds were quite sizable and there was considerable secondary trauma. Even one shot which normally would not have been fatal with other rounds (front chest, in front of shoulder) was enough to stop it within 25 yds

I have not had any troubles with lack of bullet being held in by neck, but undoubtedly, I am operating just at or slightly under the recommended seating depth (which should be equal to caliber).

You can probably work up to the next accuracy node at or slightly above 45.0, especially if you start seating bullets long.

Re: .308 Pet load

I was working up a load just yesterday (ala Dan Newberry's OCW method). Details:

Rem 700 BDL Varmint .308 (24 inch, 1:10)
Case: Austrian surplus 7.62 NATO, fired once/fire formed.
CCI BR Primer
Varget powder (44.3 to 44.8)
178g A-Max 2.825 COL

Results:
IMAG0282.jpeg

I messed up the log a bit by starting back at #1 after the 5 foulers/zeroers. 6-25 are marked as 1-19.

I'm thinking #3 (44.5g) is a fluke. I can't see that being due to getting out of the node, then getting back in at 44.6g. I'm going to redo this test maybe with just 44.4, 44.5, and 44.6.

Re: .308 Pet load

I am just getting started reloading for my Rem 5R, I have 100 new Remington brass, CCI 220 primers, Varget powder, and 175gr SMKs. A fellow shooter recommeded 43.0 grains of Varget which shoots great groups in his 5R. I know that Remington brass isn't the best, and I wonder if I shoudn't just pony up and get some better brass to start with from square one. Thoughts?

You will want to eventually, but the best thing I can tell you to do now is not to worry so much about what other's favorite brass is or "pet load." Seat your SMK's around 2.82 or so, do a few ladder tests with the varget and then pick the one that shot tightest. Then load up that "crappy" remington brass and go shoot, shoot, shoot. Run your dope out to 1000 yes in a program like Shooter for your smart phone and then test it. Remington will work just fine for what your starting out to do.

Your rifle/bullet/powder combo is a very good combo because it's not hard to load for and several variations in it it will work. The 175 is easily a 1000 yd bullet even starting at 2400 FPS, especially at your elevation. Don't mess with differing COAL's, or bullets that require that for now. Shoot the 175 in that brass until the primer pockets get loose and spend all that extra time you're not screwing with a sensitive bullet to go shoot more and work on your fundamentals, dope and wind reading.

Every factory Remington I had,had long throats. If you seated them out to the lands you could not put them in the magazine. If you single load them then it doesn't matter. 175 SMK's will take a jump or seat close to the lands. Good bullet to start with, Plus the cost vs the custom bullets.

Re: .308 Pet load

FCGM or Hornady match brass , FGM primer , 43.4 grains of Varget , 168 SMK loaded to 2.810 . Light recoil easy on brass and gun , and every bit as accurate out to 400 as with the next node that is ~ 44.5 . Remington 700 26 Varmint in AIC

Re: .308 Pet load

As of Thursday, I own 13 .308s:(
I need to get another or re barrel one of them to something else.

My favorite 308 load is:
110 gr Vmax moly .308 LC or WW brass, 44.9 gr 4895 2.815"
~ 43kpsi, ~ 2950 fps in 22" barrel

If a 308 is going to shoot a group at 100 yards with anything, it will shoot it with that.

Re: .308 Pet load

Winchester brass
44.0 gr IMR 4064
CCI BR2 primer
175 Sierra Matchking

With the new imr powder start with 43.5 and work up. Also works well with federal 210m primer.

Federal gold medal brass
45.0 Varget
CCI BR2 Primer
168 SMK

As always start lower and work up.

I should say these loads have shot well out of several different hart 1:10 twist barrels as well as a couple of kriegers and the old blackstar barrels.
