I will be trading rifles soon and need to know is there any advantage of going with a 308 over a 243 and staying with the factory twist? The 308 would be a 1 in 12 and the 243 a 1 in 9 1/8. The rifle will be used mostly for hunting deer and some varmints at about a maximum range of 600 yards. I know that the 243 is a proven deer and varmint round but can the 308 1 in 12 twist do anything better than a 243 in a 1 in 9 1/8 twist?

If your just going to hunt with it, it doesnt really matter. If you plan on target shooting and hunting I'd go with the .308. A 1/12 twist will handel 110 grn - 208 grn if you push it right. Plus it will give you alot more accurate barrel life.

Yeah........but you gotta love what the 178's can do to a woodchuck at extended range, and there is virtually no price diff in ammo from factory. Always go bigger if it costs the same all around cause you never know what you will need to shoot one day.

Probably better to plan a rifle around what you <span style="font-style: italic">will</span> shoot than around what you <span style="font-style: italic">might</span> shoot.

Yeah, that & you might have to change your screen name if you go to the .308.

I have decided to stay with the 243. It shoots flatter and resist wind better. I guess I will just have to buy barrels more often.

260, then 7-08, then probably 308 for the barrel life. The 243 is bad ass so long as you keep barrels on order.

I thought sure I had settled on the 243 but today I looked at the sps tactical 308. I love the short barrel so now I don't know what I am going to do. I originally wanted the 308 and the short barrel but then I moved to the 243 because I already have dies and brass and everything set up for a 243 and i also like to push my bullets pretty fast. However there are some advantages to the 308. I can get a 20 inch barrel instead of a 26 which will be much more handy in the woods and hunting stands. You also have more margin for error with a larger caliber. Should I just get the 308 sps tactical and learn to read the wind better or go with the 243 in a sps varmint?

get a 308, you wont be dissapointed, i love all mine, look @ it this way... instead of using your 243 for prairie dogs from 50-600M, you can use your new 308 for prairie dogs from 50-1000M!!!

Get the SPS-T and have fun, by the time you get the barrel worn in, you'll know better what you really want to do and can have the SPS-T rebarreled.

How much worse is the recoil and muzzle blast going to be with that 20 inch barrel compared to the 26? I am not going to brake or suppress it. I just don't want to get anything that will not be fun to shoot.

Youll be ok just get a bipod you can load and get behind the rifle properly.

Its not a big deal. I have one and so does my father. they arn't any louder than any other normal rifle and the recoil isn't bad either. Like 81sfo said, get behind the rifle correctly and you can handle about anything.

I am probably going to get the sps tactical despite my dad's best effort to talk me out of it. I realized the other night that I have a set of 308 dies so that's one less thing for me to have to buy. I just need to order some brass and I will be good to go. Thanks for the help.

You really wont be sorry, all the ones I've had expirience with were shooters and its an easy setup to start out with. The stock that comes on it will get you started and will shoot great groups, it is a far cry from a good stock. A HS percision or Bell and Carlson will run you about $200 and is a good investment to think about down the road.

A 20" barrel will have the bullet uncork on about twice the pressure as will happen in a 26" barrel. Thus its a lot louder in an absolute fine grained scale, but both are inaudable beyond 800 yards. At night, the muzzle blast signature is "way bigger", although neighter is hard to see.

I traded for the sps tactical in 308 today. I got rid of my savage predator hunter. I think I am going to love the shorter barrel. Tonight I noticed what looks like a small chip on the crown. I hope this is not going to be a problem. I haven't shot it yet so I don't know if this is going to be an issue but I'm hoping it will be fine. Thanks again for helping me with my decision.

The chip was no problem at all. From the one load that I have tried it is going to be very accurate. I was a little worried about trading a Savage for a Remington. I figured the Remington was going to be less accurate but I believe I have noting to worry about. The recoil is very mild but I am going to have to go to a shorter bipod. The 9" to 13" is just to tall for me. Sometimes I have trouble loading the bipod because of it.

I went from a 9"-13" P.O.S. to a 6"-9" Harris. The Harris is actually a helpful tool as opposed to the longer P.O.S. Also if you're planning on hunting predators with the rifle, the taller bipod will get you busted in a hurry.

I shot the sps-t again today. This time I went with the 165 grain hornady interlock btsp. I was surprised with the results. The three shot group measured .389 center to center at 100 yards. At 500 yards a three shot group measured 3.5 inches. I understand this is not match winning accuracy but I think it is a good place to start.
