I want to get back into casual shooting and hunting with my dad. I'm eyeing up a .308 Rem 700 SPS Tactical 20" barrel. Only plan on shooting 300 - 500 yards tops. Should I:
1 - Buy that gun?
2 - buy a bipod (recommendations)?
3 - buy a scope (recommendations)?
4 - take a class before I get a bipod and optics?
5 - is a class a waste of money for shooting 300 yards?
Looking to shoot 1 MOA.

Re: .308 Rem 700 SPS Tact good for me?

1. Good gun to start, but I would go for the 20" AAC SD edition instead.
2. Not most important but nice to have (http://www.triadtactical.com/Harris-Bi-pod-6-9-Swivel-Notched-leg.html 6-9" off a bench 9-13" in the field)
3. Scope is just as important as the gun (http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P53712.aspx is a very good scope for low $$)
4.Learn stuff from here and invest in ammo and some range time before shelling out a lot on classes, you will know when it's time for more instruction.
5.Good classes are never a waste of money, but if you aren't looking to be crazy accurate then they aren't a top priority.

It's a great rifle to start with, mine has the 26" barrel... xtra 2" gets me a lil more velocity for lobbing lead way out to 1000+yds, and 2" of barrel isn't going to get in the way. I also upgraded the trigger to a Timney, adjusted to 2 lbs.

I wouldnt bother with classes, lots of info here on snipershide. I'm getting great results with Vortex scopes. Mil or moa reticle, don't do the BDC. I'd recommend a 20moa rail also, along with a swivel Harris or Blackhawk 6-9" bipod. Bubble level to mount on scope.

One thing i'd upgrade ASAP is the stock. Whether it's the plastic one or Hogue stock, both have ridiculous forearm flex. I replaced mine with a B&C A3.

The Sps tac will work to start and even longer. If you are looking for the most bang for your buck I would try to find one of those ADL varmints and have a smith cut and crown it to 20". Most folks scrap the hoque stock anyway, so you may come out with the stock you want and pretty much the same rifle for under the new SPS tac sticker price. There was a light tactical varmint floating around. The LTR barreled action with a tupperware stock, but those have dired up. That is the 20" fluted 1:10 bbl in a sps varmint stock.
In short the ADL varmint, SPS varmint, and SPS tac use the same barreled action and twist rate) just that the standard tac is shorter and says Tactical on the side.

If you have a Cabelas, I would stop by and see if they have a Tikka scout in stock. Just get a look at one and compare.

Next good glass, enough said.

As for classes, it is always best to learn the correct way upfront. If you have classes in your area, it would not hurt to enroll, or find a mentor.

Good luck

Yup, great option.

I put mine in a HS takeoff stock from a LTR. Works fine. Decent optics don't have to cost a lot. From there you'll find all sorts of little upgrades that you can take or leave.

Take a serious look at the online training here. I shoot much better than I thought I could based on that knowledge. You'll be amazed at what you can do pretty quickly.
