Can I get 190 match kings going fast enough with varget out of a 23" barrel for them to do well at 1k? BTW I have a 1 in 10. My other current option is the 170 lapua lockbase.

You should be able to find an accuracy node with the 190's right around 42 grains of Varget... any MV over 2400 should easily make 1000 yards, and a little beyond.
I shoot 190's outta 22" 700p 1in 10" shilen match @ 2450...

46.5 of Power Pro 2000 MR gets me 2650 ish from a Broughton 23" 10 twist. Ridiculously accurate as well.
Great timing on this thread. I just loaded up an OCW spread with 190s over Varget, 1:10/24" barrel. It might be this weekend before I can run the test, but I'll post some results here when I do.
The RL 17 should give you another 100 to 150 fps with the 190s over what can be expected with 4064.

+1 on the 46.5gr Power Pro 2000MR. 2630fps, really accurate. 26" Rock 11.25 twist. I have hit steel at 1300 with it.

Luckily have had 7lbs of it waiting to load up these 190 gr JLK's before the craze hit. Thought I'd give it a try now that I have a little time to do so. Should be a great load if I can get these 190's to shoot as well as my 175 SMK & varget as long as I can get it close to the 2600 fps mark.
Accuracy is the main thing, so if you can get the bullet to shoot tight you can just get your trajectory table figured out and call the wind well, and it'll serve you well.
There have been a lot of 190's sent downrange over the years by .308's, and matches have been won. Some old school shooters used to use a case full of IMR 4350 to send them, and it worked well. I don't remember the charge, but it's out there somewhere.
We have a guy who shot great at one of our matches a couple months back, using the 190's and 4350.
But the 4064 will work well. I would try to keep it in the mid 40's if you can get enough velocity to serve you well at that level.

It doesn't matter. Run the numbers: a .533BC bullet at 2550fps vs. a .508BC bullet at 2950fps or a .545BC bullet at 2700fps. Accuracy at 100yards with the 190's was excellent even at 2200fps, but the question remains: Why bother?.
I scored a smokin' deal on a bunch 190s; I paid $0.30 on the retail dollar for them. They may not be the 'best' choice, but I ran an OCW test and then loaded up a small batch based on the results of the test.

These printed .6-.7moa at 200 yards. My OCW-tuned 168 load groups tighter (.4-.5moa) so the 190 load could use a bit more work, but they're looking promising.

Considering I shot the above loads out of a 24" barrel, and although I haven't yet shot them beyond 200 yards, based on ballistics they'll still be plenty supersonic at 1k yards.

On component choices, as y'all know the 'prime' stuff is damn near unobtanium right now. I'm not competitively shooting matches... yet. I will eventually, so I'm working with what I have to improve both my marksmanship and handloading skills. Are 190s the 'best' for the 308 chamber? No. Are they one helluva lot better than the alternative of not shooting? Hell yes IMO

I'm curious to see how they work for you at longer distances. This is where I think you might see this load shine using the heavier bullets. Let us know how it works out.
Will do! We're in a heat wave here in AZ, hopefully things will cool down a bit. Spending the day on my belly in 110* heat is... flippin hot. I have a 600 yd spot I intend on tossing these
As an update, I have been messing with some reloader 17 and 190gr jlk's (sorry, realize these aren't SMK'S, but this will give velocity ballparks). Went with the 190's because of my twist rate. Didnt think i could get the 208 amax's to stabilize. From the get go, these shot very well loaded at max mag length for AI mags (about 0.02" jump). Here's the data

Was amazed what kind of velocity this was giving me. The 49.2 & 49.5 was defiantly too hot as I was getting hard bolt lift and slight ejector swipes. However, the 49.2 put four bullets in 3/8"@ 100 yards. Will work with the 48.3 grains as it yielded great grouping as well. All loads shot at 1 moa or better.
Hopefully more updates to come. Have plenty of bullets to put down range.

My preferred load for a 308 with up to 1:11.25 twist is the 190 SMK over 48.5gr. of RL17
That is loaded in to FC dated Mil brass with a 10" drop tube as it fills up the case and the load is compressed.
Winchester will allow a little more capacity. I load to 2.84" oal and use 210M primers.
Out of my 18" OBR it gives me 2545fps and out of a 20" AI AE with 1:10 Bartlein, it goes 2587fps. Both guns shoot 5 into .3's and .4's.
And a huge improvement in the wind over the 175SMK.

If BC is more important than velocity then why not stay with 175s? With the 190s you pick up 25BC points for a penalty of 15grains of weight and lose velocity. If you shoot 175VLDs at the same velocity you can pick up 40 BC points without any penalty. That's why the 190s suck in a .308.
Well. I got my 190's from powder valley last week. I worked up a load and chrony'd it today. Using 42.9 grns of IMR4064 with a coal of 2.9225" has a .018" jump. Avg MV 2,693 with no pressure signs at all. I could have went with the higher charge loads I tested, but this load grouped in the .1's. Needless to say I'm happy with this.
40.5 shot really good out of my gun too when I tested loads that could fit in my mag. my coal was 2.835" on this load.
Not even close. I ended up developing two loads. The other was with 40.5 grns and a 2.835" coal. had about the same accuracy, but obviously slower.
