My Hornady manual lists very low charges compared to other sources, but the loads are under their ".308 Service Rifle" section (there is no load with 4064 in the regular .308 section) so maybe that's why.

I've seen many pet loads with 4064 and the 168smk in the 44-46gr range, but I'm unsure if the longer bearing surface and/or different shape of the AMAX would make those loads produce too much pressure. I've already loaded up some rounds from 37-45gr for an OCW test (5rds each in increments of .4gr with FC brass trimmed to 2.009 at a COAL of 2.800), but haven't gotten a chance to test them yet.

Obviously I'm starting at the low end of the spectrum and working up while watching for pressure signs, but any experience or recommendations with this combo would be greatly appreciated.
I am getting very good results with 43.5 of IMR 4064 in three different rifles. Lapua brass, Fed 210 primers, 168Amax.

The IMR Web Site shows to start at 43 and work up to 45, but at 45, it's a compressed load. I've had decent luck with 39.5 under a 168 SMK, and there seems to be another node around 42.5. I was using NATO brass so 42.5 grains was up around 2833-2847 FPS out of a 30" 1:12 in 90 degree heat.

Re: 308 Winchester

I have been using 42.5 grains of IMR 4064 in new production PMC cases with 168 AMAX. These cases are much thicker than others and similar to NATO without the primer crimp. Worked up from 41.5 grains to 43 grains, I hit a node right at 42.5. At 43 grains groups opened up but no visible pressure signs. I am sticking with 42.5 for now; especially since case fill is close to 100% and I have not cronied this load yet.

Concerning the .308 178 grain Hornady Match: I tried and like them, so bought 800. Rifle is a Savage Precision Carbine, 20" 5R 1:11.25 twist. I started low and worked up to Hodgdon's max recommended for 175 and 180 grain bullets, 45.0 grain of Varget and am getting no signs of excessive pressure. All my shooting so far has been on cool days, 60 degrees or less. Brass is Lapua, primer is CCI BR-2, COAL is 2.770. Chronograph average for 20 test loads was 2740 fps and drop tests have confirmed that.

I have been shooting 175smk and 178Amax but picked up 1000 Nosler 155cc's to play with. I have IMR4064, Varget and H4895. I typically use 4064 for my 175's and 178's but have a ton of H4895 so I want to find an accurate load with H4895 and the 155cc's.

Can someone give me the book min./max. for the 185 juggernauts with IMR 4064? Only saw one load running that combo and he was running 43.5. I'm running it out of a DTA 22", any other load data would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

Re: 308 Winchester

Berger Book says for 185 grain bullets (juggernauts are listed) and IMR 4064:
Start Load: 37.0
Approximate Start Velocity: 2307 fps
Max Load: 41.0
Approximate Max Velocity: 2532 fps
Approximate Fill Ratio: 103%

This is from a 24" barrel and Berger lists the COAL as 2.810" but yours will probably be slightly different. They list the 185 Juggernauts BC as:
G1 BC - 0.560
G7 BC - 0.283

Suggest 1 in 12" twist or faster

I've shot H-4895 in my 22" GAP 10 with the 155 CC's. With 44.0 grains, I'm getting avg 2819 FPS with goood accuracy. I've gone up to 45.0 grains in my bolt guns, but haven't chrono'ed those. I think you'll find a good load for the 155's somewhere between 43-45 grains of H-4895.

I actually got out yesterday to test H4895/155cc. I loaded up an OCW test from 43.9-46.1 in .3g increments. Found a lights out load at 45.8g. Shot a single hole .119" group. 46.1g was right behind it with a slightly larger hole measuring .327".

My .308's favorite load was 45gr R15 behind the 155gr Scenar. 10 shots into .7ish MOA, which is not bad for 10 shots.

GAP-10 308 with 20" barrel
178 AMAX
42.5 gr Reloader 15
2.8" OAL (mag length)
Lapua brass
CCI 250 primers (large rifle magnum)
2490 fps

I got this load from George from GAP off of the GAP-10 thread from the old boards. If I remember correctly, he suggested 42.5 grains of Varget or Reloader 15 for 175 grain bullets loaded to mag length (2.8" OAL). Remember, this is for a gas gun.

Best group of the day at 200 yards, 60* out and barely wind. Soft recoiling accurate load. Only my last 3 rounds, wish I had a few more at the end of the day! This will probably never happen again.

M118LR clone:

LC Match brass

178AMAX/175SMK (seem interchangeable with this load)

42.5gr Varget

CCI LR primers

2.775" OAL

LFCD

2605fps from Steyr SBS Tactical 23.6" barrel, sub MOA in every rifle I've ever tried it in (that was sub MOA capable). Works great in AR10, SCAR17, various bolt guns, Colt 901, etc.

You can increase the COAL to 2.8~ but you'll need another .3gr powder.

next project: 155AMAX or 155CC and Ramshot TAC.

I load 44 grains of 4064 with the 168 Berger Hybrid with good results. I shoot out of a factory Remington 7005r. I had poor results initially with the long throat. I kept thinking I needed to seat closer to the lands but in fact I had better luck jumping them further. I set my COL to 2.78 or 2.11 CBTO. I was getting about 2720 FPS at that load. I loaded up to Hodgdon's max upon initial pressure testing and worked up to 45 grains with velocities at 2800FPS out of a 24" barrel. I have some Varget and will try that next then let you know.

Re: 308 Winchester
04/28/2015

I realize I did not acknowledge your having Varget. I would probably load around the same @ 44 grains. I find Varget and 4064 to be similar in terms of charge weights. IE: for 175 Matchkings I load 44.5 Varget and 44.4 4064. When testing the 168 Hybrid with 4064 I got weird pressure results. At 44.5 I saw ejector swipes. At 45 grains I saw no pressure signs and great accuracy. The low node appeared to be around 44 and shot around 1/2" at 100 yards and 300, so I went with that given the pressure indications at 44.5. I want to try the 185 Hyrbid or OTM next granted the higher BC. At 2600FPS which should be attainable with Varget it performs much better at 1000.

So Dan Newberry has some good 308 loads: sniperforums.com/forum/reloading/43364-308-reloading-data-only.html

One that I tried today performed exceptionally well:

43.4gr of IMR 4064
175 SMK
Win/BHA brass
WLR
COL 2.800" (doesn't care how far it jumps)

2720 FPS out of a 24" barrel (Rem 700 5R). 1/2 MOA (basically a big ragged hole).

I would not put this load in a gas gun.

For a 308 gas gun (SP-10, 18" barrel):

168 BTHP (nolser cc)
43.2gr IMR 4064
WLR
Win brass
2.800"

2515 fps

1/2 MOA if you're a good gas gun shooter. B/N 1/2 - 1 MOA w/ a 10x scope very reliably for mere mortals.

~ 2425 fps ... yes, shooting big guys out of a gas gun means you're the fat boy on a race track. You want more speed, use 155s or a bolt gun.

The 43.8 at 20 off the lands looks best, 2.133 to the ogive, this puts me 20 off on this particular rifle (max to ogive is 2.153), dont mimic this measurement unless you determine what the max length is to the ogive on your rifle. COAL 2.855

I took my 43.5 Varget , 185 juggernaut load out today and shot a little. Got my BEST group past 600 yards since I've had the rifle.
671 yards. 4.7 mils with a 123 yard zero. ( yes I know 123 yards sounds weird , but it puts me at exactly in line with my G2DMR reticle at 4,5,6,7,&850 yards. )

Quite naturally , I painted targets for 30 minutes from 600 to 1,000 and by the time I just started shooting , it began POURING rain. But managed to get this pic in my scope. FOUR SHOTS. About 1 1/2" group.

About 42 grains depending on your seating depth is what you are looking for.

I am running RL 15 at 41.9 and getting an avg of 2510 fps with A-Max 168. this is out of a 18" barrel. Has any one else tried this powder and with the bullet. I also noticed that when I use SMK 168 they print about 2" lower and the avg is about 125 to 150 FPS slower. This is with the same powder and charge.

I shot this load out of a semi-auto with an 11 twist 20 inch Rainier Arms Select barrel.

Hornady 155 BTHP (seated to mag length and crimped at the Cannulure)

Winchester brass

Wolf Large primer

46.2 grains of Winchester 748

Avg MV (ten shots) 2811 FPS

Extreme spread - 51

Standard Deviation 15

I didn't want to measure groups shot with the magnitospeed attached, but the group was concentric and centered on the target.

Next range trip I'll shoot three ten shot groups to get a good average group size.

My load is getting on the hot side and has been checked on two different chronographs, but i didn't see another load with this much IMR 4064 so here it is.

Rifle...HS Precision HTR 308

Brass... Lapua

Powder... 45gr IMR 4064

Bullet... 175gr Sierra Matchking

Primer... CCI #200

This load has a six shot average of 2730fps, the fgmm primers drop off about 10fps.

Bullets ars seated to an overall length of 2.855 which is about .005 off of the rifling in my rifle.

Thanks Aimsmall. Man i couldn't pull my shit together today. Had one 5 shot group with one ragged hole for the first three, then a five shot group with one ragged hole for the first four. Wound up pulling some. I chrono'd it with the 30CB9.

Average was 2629fps out of 8 shots. I shot 9 but through away the first because it wasn't nearly as consistent as the rest. It was 2618. Thought i was going to lose a lot more going from 24 to 20"

I cant get Alliants powder guide to come up on my ipad so i cant help you there

Varget is 47g and 46 for H4985. hodgdonreloading.com

Make sure you start low and work up to that. Chances are you will find a more accurate load well under max.

This is from the old site

I looked back severral pages in this topic and couldnt find any loads for the berger 200 hybrid. I am thinking about loadig them for F-TR at 1k but would like to see if someone else has had luck with them before going through the work of building a load.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'm the guy Aimsmall was talking about that shoots the 200s. It was the 185s i shot in the state match. I've shot them (200s) in two matches so far (Louisiana and Texas) and did really well with em. They shoot about the same as my 185 hybrid load at distance (300 yard and beyond) but the 185s group a tad better at 100 yard. At 300 yards in load developement they both shoot right at or under an inch group consistantly (5 shots) with not much vertical. If you can handle the recoil I would give em a whirl, they should do well at 1000 yard. With that being said i've only shot 600 yard FTR matches with them but feel confident that they would be fine at 1000. I did shoot the 185s at 1000 and they did very well. The 185 juggernauts shot well also with the same powder charge as the 185 hybrids but the rifle seems to like the hybrids a bit better for some reason and the BC is a hair higher so that doesn't hurt either.

The 200 gr load
46.3 gr Power Pro 2000MR
CCI BR2
2.240 base to ogive (jammed in lands in my rifle)
Lapua brass, unturned

The 185 hybrid load
47.6 gr Power Pro 2000MR
CCI BR2
2.210 Base to ogive
Lapua brass, unturned

The 200s are running about 2650 to 2675 depending on the weather/temps. The 185s are about 2800 to 2825.

28 inch Krieger with 11 twist barrel
Bat action
B & C Medalist A2 stock
Jewel trigger set at 8 oz
Nightforce 12 X 42 X 56mm NXS
Rifle weight 17.5 lb. with bipod attached

If anyone tries these loads please work up to it as all rifles are different and it may not be safe in yours. Its a pretty stiff but safe load in mine. The reamer used on this rifle has .123 freebore which is not really ideal for the 200s but I cant argue with the results so far.

Finally got around to shooting a new load workup with Lapua brass, Varget, 175smk and CCI200 primers. According to Dan Newberry, 43.5 should be what I was looking for and he was spot on! Group came in around .394. Velocity average was 2677 and a SD of 8.3 for 5 shots. Rifle is an FN SPR A1. I'll play with seating depth next week and see if I can get this thing close to 1/4. I'll push it to 500/1000 yards after that.

Re: 308 Winchester

This is my match load and it replicates 175 FGMM perfectly in my gun. Same POI, same DOPE to 1000 yards, same group size, same velocity.

Rifle is Rem 700 5r Mil Spec cut to 20" with surefire brake and SOCOM silencer. 2557 fps is avg. velocity with can measured by magnetospeed.

FC case

210M primer

175 SMK seated to 2.815

41.3 gr. IMR 8208 XBR.

I usually shoot .5 - .7 MOA groups with this rifle using FGMM and have been replicating that performance using this load and have been able to hit to 1000 using same come up. I still have issues with some of my process so hopefully I can fine tune this load to shrink the groups a little more but I'm pretty happy with that from a factory rifle.

Rifle: Savage 10, Criterion 308 Winchester 28" Bull, McRees Chassis, Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27x50
  • 155 Sierra Tipped Match King (Using Litz 0.238 G7)
  • Seated 0.060" off the lands
  • 44.4gr IMR 4064
  • Lapua Brass, Fired 3x and Annealed
  • Winchester Large Rifle
  • Velocity ~2890.
  • ES: Unk
  • SD: Unk

Have not chronographed, but have shot it out to 1000 twice now and using 0.238 G7 @ 2890fps gives me perfect elevation. Every single one of my misses would be off the center of the right or left edge from wind.

120 Yard group, first round was a called flyer when I jerked the trigger. The group itself is rounds 2-6 so it is a 5 shot.

2RZMO2o.jpg

Another range trip, cold bore shot after some dry fire time. Couldnt see the shot and had to wait and walk down range.

xkxu2yy.jpg

The next 5 shots after the cold bore. Slight wind, but steady. Would have made a nice group even adding in the cold bore.

Re: 308 Winchester

I recall on the old hide, reading that the pressure curve of Varget seems to cause AR's to be a little rough on brass. Such is the case with my OBR it seems. But, at the time I had four jugs of Varget stocked up so I wasn't about to change powder. Well, I'm running my stocks pretty low here; need to see if there is a better option.

So, question is, are there any powders that will give the performance of Varget with .308 but perhaps be a little more gentle on my brass?

Re: 308 Winchester

I never tried Varget (I'm a newby) in my AR because I can't find it anywhere. I use RL-15 for my .223 and my wife's .308 (bolt gun) hunting loads. Her bolt gun likes 44.3 grains of RL-15 and 125gr pro hunters. They have little recoil and low velocity, 2473 ft/sec, but are very accurate. We are in South East Georgia where the deer are small and shots are normally less than 100 yards. I've got a friend that shoots BLC-2 in everything .223 and .308. I haven't asked him about the specifics though. It seems to work great for him and it is plentiful.

I have been shooting 185gr Berger VLD's with 47.5gr of 2000MR with a COAL of 2.930. I'm getting out of the single load stuff and would like to try Berger's 185 classic hunter. Does anybody have an idea what load of 2000MR would work with a SAAMI spec length or at least a length that will fit in a normal magazine?

New light recoil ball load with ball powder - easy loading on progressive press, decent accuracy, mild recoil impulse.

Hornady 150FMJ

Ramshot TAC 40.3

LC Match

CCI 400

seated mid cannelure

LFCD

46kpsi at 2425fps from 16" gas guns.

This is at node 7, about .960ms barrel time. Recoil is mild, accuracy is slightly above MOA with 4x ACOG and NF 1-4 scopes. At the next higher node, which would be fine in bolt guns, both gas guns were chewing up the brass pretty badly.

An adjustable gas block will do a lot to mitigate your circumstance. Most gas guns are over-gassed. The chambers can take the pressure, but with those big gas ports, you get excessive recoil, very high bolt velocity, premature unlocking, and trashed brass.

Re: 308 Winchester
10/18/2015

I wanted to put this out there because I don't see a lot of load data for AR-Comp and maybe someone will one day be searching like I was for a recipe guideline one day.

41.5gr Alliant AR-Comp

CCI 200 primer

Lapua brass (virgin)

175 Sierra Matchking

2.820" OAL

Approximately 2,620 FPS from Accuracy International AX 20" Bartlein (1:10 twist)

(This was confirmed with dope to 940 yards at a class this past weekend)

My accuracy during load development was actually really good from about 41.2 grains up through 41.7, but the "tightest" group (0.277" at 100 yards) was with 41.5, so I stuck with it. At 42.0 I started to see distinct ejector swipe. I saw no need to try for any more. Nothing in any charge weight I tried was over 7/8", but it was noticeably tighter from 41.2 thru 41.7. I had no idea as to MV, so at my class we shot out to 940 yards and backed into the MV.

I shoot a GAP Crusader as well I just got a month or so ago. Im shooting 155gn TMK hand loads. OAL is 2.950 and just fit inside the mag. I've loaded 43, 44, 45 and 46 grains of Varget using CCI BR-2 Large rifle primers with FL sized cases trimmed to 2.015. All 4 of those loads shot .25 to .375 @100y with the 45gn and 46gn loads doing the best. Going out tomorrow with the 45gn and 46gn loads in neck sized only fire formed cases to see how they do. I hope the do as well or better, I don't like FL sizing cases.

I don't see many using that powder. You might be better off google'n the powder and bullets and see if you can get an idea.

That said, I would do an OCW test. This is going to be the best way to find the charge that your rifle likes. Once you find one, load up 5 shots in 1/10th grain increments around that node. So, say your 3 shot group of charge 43 grains impacted the best, I would load up 5 rounds of 42.8, 42.9, 43, 43.1 and 43.2.

I've got similar results with 41.7 4064, 175 smk, LC brass, GM210M fired from 24" Remington 700 5r rifle. 5 rounds 0.500" at 100 meters, rest of the target was re-zeroing scope (removed spuhr mount to clean) and fouling shots. I had finally cleaned out EVERY last bit of copper and fouling after 1700 rounds of 43.5-45 gr of varget. took almost 30 rounds to re-foul the bore, but finally gave me something to smile about!

I bought a chargemaster on cyber monday, and then this weekend picked up 6 pounds of 8208 XBR. Was going to do a ladder test starting at 39.6 increasing by 0.4gr until 42.6 gr. Unless someone else has other suggestions?

I ordered a Labradar from a well known dealer in Canada on Monday, they shipped Tuesday (xpresspost) I should get it today!! So this weekend the ladder test will be well documented.

175gr SMK and TMK seem to be very jump tolerant. I get little POI deviation out to 600 yards with as much as 0.010" variance.

Thanks for that info.

Anyone have data on longer jumps, like .110?

At least it ain't like that .25 jump I found in my son's brand-new Rem 700 in .308. I'm not sure that even 1960s-era uber-Magnums had that much "freebore".

My mag-length loads are jumping .08, BTW. I could maybe cut that by .02 to .060. Might have to limit myself to plastic-tip ammo doing that. Metal magazines and all. Had trouble with 168 SMKs on the prior barrel when I was pushing the limits of mag length. The meplats dug into the front of one mag and it just wouldn't feed.

Thanks!

Not published as far as I know.

Merely an estimate from a computer program.

YOUR case capacity might be more or less than the 56 grains of water I used.

Hornady 208 A-Max shows absolute MAX with 4064 at 70° F as 41.1 grains giving 2376 fps.

Same load, 22-in barrel predicts 2420 fps. 24-inch, 2459. 26, 2494.

YMMV. Do not use. Verify with multiple sources and work up. IME, squared off primer radius when the cartridge is properly fitted to the chamber = over SAAMI spec.

Umm...yeah, did a measurement on mine the other day, pretty much same. I haven't done anything to the rifle and it has the same massive freebore. No idea why there would be so much, but hey, I'm not an engineer yet so I'm not calling the shots. What kind of detriment or benefit would there be to that much freebore? I wanted to mess with it and start loading to .015 off the lands and then my magazine said, "NOPE!"

Well, my son tried loading out to get closer to the lands on that R700...and by the time the ogive was touching, there was only about 1/16-inch.,0625 of the bearing surface left inside the case neck.

There's long-loading for the single shot dance, then there's getting ridiculously close to the old [I'm sure I read about something like this being done 100+ years ago...] trick of putting the bullet in the throat, putting the muzzle up, and chambering the charged case.

We never pushed the accuracy search that far. But we did enough to reliably conclude that the factory barrel would NOT shoot better than...something rather lacklusterl Maybe it was 1.75 MOA, 2 MOA or something. Quite disappointing for a rig bedded into a $400 dollar stock, Seekins base, somebody's good rings, and a decent quality Vortex Viper scope.

IN the 1960s Magnum craze, a lot of freebore was a trick to get velocities up, way up, supposedly without running as much of a risk of pressure problems. Back then a lot of people were satisfied with 2-3 MOA for their big sticks, 'cause they weren't 1,000-yard target guns. Or so they said.

Well, and then there's another 700 we have, a little older, in 7mm-08. We picked it up at a gun show with handloads the guy had for it, and that rifle has pulled a couple bullets out of the casings on extraction, like it's got almost no freebore. And the cartridges aren't loaded uber-long. The thing about it is that I'm putting a new stock on my rifle (the .308) and I'll see what I can get accuracy to do. If it shoots pretty decently, I'll shoot the barrel out. If the groups aren't really that pretty, I'll rebarrel (which I intended on doing anyway).

Beginner reloading question. So in all the reloading books the are using a 22" or 24" barrel length for their "test" barrel. This is part of what they use to figure out the min/max loads for a given powder. How does that compare to loading for an 18" barrel in an AR10. I believe most to the test guns are bolt action.

Hey guys I got a couple boxes of the eld-x 200gn I am looking for a good load using varget. My big hold back is my max coal is 2.890 I am thinking of working up load development in .5 gn increments from 37-42 I think compressed loads will start around 41. Has anyone played with these yet? My current load for juggernauts is great but I stumbled across these two boxes and figured I would give them a shot.

Cheers, Rusty

I ended up loading 37.5-42gn I got a tiny bit of compression at 41.5 so I bumped the 42 gn loads to 2.895oal. So all of them are jumping. 0.013 but the 42gn are jumped. 008. I will do a ladder test at 500 yards and check back in. I have a 26" factory savage 10fp really hoping to see 2500fps and no pressure signs at 42gn but I have a feeling ill be sitting around 41gn and 2350.

Savage 10fp 26"
Hornady eld-x 200gr
Hornady brass neck sized
Varget
Cci br2

I shot 3 ten shot strings with 10 minutes of cool down between them. I started from low to high and then alternated each string. 500 yds, Da:2378

38gr was the best vertical with only 2.5" and a 3 shot "group" of 4.3" but was very slow at roughly 2250fps? Estimated off of 14.5mins. 2.240 cbto. .013 jump

39.5gr barely noticeable primer crater.

41 gr slight compression at 2.240cbto distinct crater

42 gr 2.245 cbto . 008 jump. slight compression. distinct crater, flattened primer, however no ejector mark. Also second best "group" with 3" vertical. It reached my speed goal at roughly 2550fps based off of 10.2 Mins.

I am tempted to run a few at 42gr and see how they shoot out a little further. But that's a very high pressure load.

Hope this helps for anyone looking for 200gn eldx info for 308.

Cheers, Rusty

Savage 10fp
Hornady neck sized brass
Cci br2
43.5 gr Varget
185gr berger juggernaut.
No pressure signs.
2.230 cbto .023 jump

It's more accurate than my stock savage barrel and I can shoot.

31.5 mins at 1000
roughly 2700fps confirmed to 800.

Re: 308 Winchester
05/08/2016

Did some load testing yesterday. Tried CFE223 for the first time. Also honed in some loads for a 4064/Berger 185BTLR combo that had showed promise befoore. Also tried some N540 with the same 185 berger.

Rifle - Tooley Orion (Stiller Predator), Hart 24" 1:12 twist #7 contour in a Manners MCS-GAT. Using a Bushnell XRS 4.5-30x. My groups could've been a little better if I had used a different bullseye. I drew small black circles on paper and found that I cou'dn't really see the small dot in the crosshairs against that black dot. Next time I'll draw hollow circles to provide better contrast. Also I lost a few chrono numbers due to the guy next to me shooting with a muzzle brake. It was interfering with my chrono. So a few 5 shot strings only recorded 3 or 4 numbers for ES and SD purposes.

Conditions - 100 yard range, 83 deg, Dens. Altitude 1750 ft, breeze at 120 deg relative, from 5-12mph, shooting from a Hart front rest.

Load group 1 - CFE223, Berger 168 Hybrid, Wolf LR primers, Lapua brass - 4x fired, never annealed, 2.152 CBTO - which is .015 jump, 2.839 COAL

47.0 gr - 2815 fps avg, ES-22, SD-9.6, group - 0.512

47.5 gr - 2845 fps avg, ES-14, SD-5.4, group - 0.770

48.0 gr - 2881 fps avg, ES-50, SD-20.6, group - 0.672 (one round had slightly sticky bolt lift)

48.5 gr - 2917 fps avg, ES-33, SD-13.5, group -1.20 (sevral sticky bolt lifts. ) So this is the top end for my rifle. If I test this combo any more, it'll be at a lower node, maybe 46-47.5 range.

Load Group 2 - IMR4064, Berger 185BTLR, Wolf primers, Lapua brass, 2.190 CBTO - .020 jump, 2.847 COAL

44.3 gr - 2712 fps avg, ES-11, SD-5.5, group - 0.442

44.5 gr - 2732 fps avg, ES-13, SD-6.7, group - 0.573

44.7 gr - 2732 fps avg, ES-13, SD-6.0, group - 0.514 (4 shots clustered at 0.300", 5th shot touching but opened group up to 0.514)

44.9 gr - 2730 fps avg, ES-33, SD-13.5, group - 0.690 (another tight cluster with one flier)

some slight pressure signs at 44.9 like slight ejector marks/wiping, but primers look normal, bolt lift was normal. Probably no need to test above this limit. 44.5-44.7 looks like my node. Just need to do more testing for groups, to elimnate the errors from the numnuts behind the scope.

Load Group 3 - N540, Berger BTLR, same dimensions as above

43.0 gr - 2650 fps avg, ES-49, SD-22.3, group - 0.595

43.5 gr - 2657 fps avg, ES-45, SD-19.8, group - 0.207 (probably got a little lucky)

44.0 gr - 2707 fps avg, ES-31, SD-13.8, group - 0.792

No real pressure signs. Not sure I'll try this combo any more, disappointed in ES and SD's.

155gr Nosler
44.2gr Ramshot TAC
IMI Match Virgin Brass (2.010 Length)
CCI Large Rifle Primer
Total OAL 2.800

Average Velocity 2,535fps
Standard Deviation for 10 shot string, with rest between shot 5, was 9.67fps.
All velocity measurements taken with a labradar chrono. Temperature was around 60 degrees with a density altitude of around 1,750 as measured by the Kestrel.

I developed this load specifically for my Aero Precision AR308 I built, and it has a 16" Rainier Ultra-match barrel with SpecWar can. I chose the 155gr noslers because they're relatively cheap, and I've had good luck with their 77gr for my 223. I chose the 155gr specifically because my barrel is so short, I was hoping I could make up some velocity with the lighter bullets.

Why RamShot TAC? Well, I wanted to be able to load all this on a Dillon 550, as I don't want to spend a ton of time on loading ammo for a Semi-Auto that I'm going to blow through. Plus, this is the same powder I use for 223, so it's nice to stick to one powder sometimes. RamShot TAC meters extremely well in the Dillon, and gives very consistent drops.

I'm holding about MOA, or even a hair under with this load, and I can load them pretty quick on the Dillon. Kind of untraditional, but seems to work pretty well.

Geeze, AimSmall!!! Do you ever shoot a group out of the .1 or .2's?

I am going to work up a load for the 185 jugs as well. I just ordered up a 28" Bartlett from PVA.

What have you found to work best for the 185's? I've got some Varget, R15 and 4064.

I'm a little late on your post, but I am trying some out now. I have a 20" Remington 700 AAC-SD 1:10 twist. It loves 178 amax but I wanted to see what speed I could get with the 155 TMK out of the 20". Now I need to shoot some more and see how they group.

Federal GMM brass

47.0 gr Varget

155 TMK

CCI Primers

2825 fps

Thanks Chelette.
I just came in here for some 155 TMK or 155smk Palma data.

Varget is very similar to Reloader 15. So I'll drop 4 grains and work up.

Anyone else have 155 data with Varget or Reloader 15?

Im looking for some 168 tmk loads. My go to load now is 168smk, Lapua brass cci 200 primers, 44.5 varget at 2.8 COAL.. I tried just transfering the load over to the TMK bullets but didn't work out so well. Rifle is a 20" SPS tactical factory barrel with the 1/11.25 twist. I have read that the 168tmk is jump sensitive ? Looking for someone who has made the switch. thanks. Also I thought I posted this last night or so I thought but cant seem to locate it. So if this is double post my apolagies.

Shot this one this morn. Have seen some go to 51.0. Going to go up tell i hit some kind of pressure. Powder was imr 8280xbr and a 130 barnes ttsx. I know it is a three shot group but you can get an idea where the node is. Shot from a 700 5r with a 24" barrel.

Anyone using 2000MR with the HOrnady 178 BTHP or Berger 185 Juggernaut? I've been away from .308 for some time and am out of the loop on these latest double based wonderpowders like CFE 223 and AR COMP. Excited by some of these new mid-range bullet weights with nice BCs though.

Unfortunately 2000MR still is not in QL so I have no idea where to even start. I am hoping to be able to get 2700fps (from the 178s anyway) from a 20" barrel though I know it may not be possible.

QL says RL17 can get to 2732 under 62k PSI within my COAL limit (2.87" to fit in an SR-25 magazine) but I doubt this. I have a lot of RL17 on hand still and have used it since its release (on the old site, some of us instantly jumped straight to .308 and '06 heavy bullet loads with it to fantastic success) but despite numerous revisions to QL over the years I still think it looks to be 10-15k PSI high and/or 50-75fps high on some loads.

For example, my old 2.98" COAL 51gr load behind a 208gr A-max was 2705fps from a 24". QL STILL puts this at 77k PSI and 2776 fps.

Aimsmall55, thanks for the Christmas present. Just for the heck of it, I loaded up 5 rounds per your load except I added .2 of Varget because I'm using Win brass. My group looked like your 200 yd group except I was at 100. Well under .5 in. though. I've been working on a load using Power Pro 2000 and thought I found my final load (which is around .5") until trying your Varget load. Damnit, now I'm going to have to explore this some more. BTW, my cbto was at 2.220 with my comparator, which was around 2.875 coal. Thanks much!

Your welcome !! I was shooting 47.0 grains of power pro 2000 mr for a while and was getting 2830 fps in the summer and 2760 ish in the winter. It was a SCREAMING load combo. I mean 2830 fps with any bullet in .308 is moving pretty fast. But I talked to one of my FTR buddies who said I should give H4895 or Varget a try to keep powder temp from affecting mv. So I loaded 43.5 varget in Lapua brass and never looked back. The accuracy and consistency of the varget load is much better than the pp2000mr load. Merry Christmas !!

Your 18.5 inch barrel likely has two inches of chamber and 16.5 inches of actual rifling in which to build velocity.

Looks to me like you're on par for your barrel length.

Dave, could you share your barrel length and twist? I am picking up where I left off almost 20years ago on the .308. I have a new (unfired) Savage 11VT 24" 1:10", and intend to try it out developing loads with the 178 ELD-X and Varget. Any insights would also be useful.

168 SMK
43.3 Varget
Trim Length 2.005
2.210 to ogive

AI AT 308 20" with Socom brake. I get 2,580 FPS. This load is the closest to 168 GMM I can get shooting 100-600 yards.

Stock Tikka t3 CTR, found a round that works and tried sighting it in to start.

FC brass,
44.4gr varget,
Trim to 2.005
OAL to 2.800
168gr Nosler match BTHP
Win primers

No idea what the velocity was haha!

Photo Mar 03, 9 12 30 AM.jpg

175 Nosler Custom Comps
Lapua .308 brass
Federal 210 standard primers
44gr Varget
Jumped .030 to lands

2560ish FPS with a SD of 4 and a ES of 14 last time I used my magneto speed.

Has anyone tried Lapua brass, CCI 200 , Hornady 168BTHP, and 42.2 gas on H4895? I am getting 2717 from this and some pretty good groups. But was wondering if that might be to fast for the barrel. It is on a Desert Tech 22" Lorther Walther and running a Ultra 9.

New to reloading

For my first batch for my Savage 10, 24" 1 in 10 twist:

Hornady Match brass
168 gr Sierra TMK
43.0 gr Varget
CCI 200 primers

2.826" OAL
0.009" off the lands

Shot it yesterday, in a 5-10 mph crosswind, shot 3/4" groups. Can't wait to shoot it on a nice calm day.
Next batch will be with 155 gr A-Max, my gun liked that bullet in factory loads.

Found a great suppressed hunting load with my 18" Savage 10P-SR

165 Swift Scirrocco (Found on clearance at Sportsman's Warehouse)
37 grains AR Comp
Fed 210M
Lapua Brass
2.810 OAL
Little tiny group at 2510 FPS
Suppressor is a SAS Arbiter TOMB

And here's another suppressed load;
DTA 22" 308 barrel/Thunderbeast
43.5 grains Varget
175 SMK
Lapua brass
Fed GM210M
0.018 jump

Sorry no MV, there is no exposed barrel and the can was hot so couldn't strap my magneto speed on to it. About 0.25" c to c @ 100 yds.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

GAP Broughton 22" 10 twist. .002" of neck tension on all cases

178 AMAX or 175 SMK
BH/Win brass
Fed 210M or 210
45grns Varget
Seated .005" off lands for AMAX and mag length for SMK
2700fps

178 AMAX or 175 SMK
Lapua brass
CCI 200 Standard LR
44.6grns Varget
Seated .005" off lands for AMAX and mag length for SMK
2700fps

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000"><span style="font-size: 20pt">As always use care and work up to these loads as they may be too hot for your rifle and may be dangerous.</span></span></span>

I'm confused why the Amax bullets are set specifically to a predetermined distance from the lands but the two different weight SMK's are simply set to the mag. length ( I assume is 2.80 )?
I used a Hornady comparator to set my 168 SMK's to a distance from the lands but they certainly are too big for insertion into the magazine on my RPR. It doesn't concern me because I use a single shot adapter.
Do you do them to mag. length just for convenience? your rep. shows you are a very accomplished shooter so you would know.

Savage 10
1 in 10"
24" barrel

Berger OTM 185
43.5 gr Varget
Lapua Brass
CCI 200
Against the lands at 2.870" OAL, still fit in my mags (*barely*)

0.82 MOA at 420 yards
Stretching them out more soon, high hopes for this load's long range capability

I found an accuracy node in my Bergara HMR with TAC powder.

L/C prepped and annealed brass.
CCI BR 2 primers
165 grain Hornady SST
OACL 2.800"
43.1 grains of TAC

Averaged 2660 FPS out of a 20" barrel

Right at MOA and SUB MOA at 100 yards.

Hits on steel at 230 yds, 450 yds, and 600 yds.

Any issues with accuracy are Indian related, not the arrow.

42.2gr IMR 4064
175gr SMK
Wincester Brass, deburr/neck turned
bump .002 Headspace, Lee Collet Neck Dies
Brass Neck/ Loaded bullet runoff ~.002 under with CO-AX press

.4 moa 5 shot group

I am looking at trying Berger 175gr VLD hunters in .308 with Varget powder. I looked but more than likely missed if someone had tried this. And what kind of results have you gotten. I will be running a22" barrel with 1-11 twist (DTA). Thanks for t he help.

here you go, DTA, 22" suppressed, 175VLD's, 44.6 gn Varget , seated just touching the lands, avg 2716 fps. They shoot much better than sub moa. Hope this helps

This was with 44.0 varget and set .020 off the lands. I did not have the time to chrono them. Hope to be able this week.

Stock Howa 1500, 24"
SWFA 3-15X50
KRG 180-Xray

Nosler 175 RDF
42.5 gr Ramshot TAC
Lapua brass, many firings
CCI BR2 primer
.002" neck tension
2.09" OAL to ogive

10 rounds @100 yds, X ring = 1 inch diameter. I suck based on the two shanked upwards.
Howa 10 shot group.jpg

100 - 4X on NRA 600 yd F class target, no picture of that. 10 ring = 6" diameter, X ring = 3" diameter on the F class target.

Looking to replace 175 SMK over to 185 juggernauts in my 24" 1-10 .308. I currently run imr 4064. What's everyone's preference of powder for the jugs? I've seen lots of re-15 and varget. I have a pound or two of both. Anything out there more promising?

24” Criterion Light Varmint 10”twist barrel

44gr Varget
185gr Berger Classic Hunter, lightly kissing the lands.
Tula Large Rifle Magnum.
5 shots at 100 yards

Can’t say with certainty if the flyer was me or not. 4 of the five went into .285”.

Ran a seating depth test. It likes the 185gr Classic Hunters at .030” off the lands. At that depth, it put five into .304”. Left to right; .010” off, .020” off and .030” off. The load in the post above was .010” into the lands.

Criterion Light Varmint, 10” twist.

Ubet:

Any pressure signs? I have an identical rifle and my high node was 44.4 Varget with the SMK 175. I can imagine what you brass life is going to be!

Currently getting ready to start a work up on the tipped MK 175's.

Thanks,

RMD

I was working up some 155gr Hornady ELD-M loads yesterday, using IMR 4320, FGGM primers and virgin Lapua brass. All rounds were shot through 20" factory Remington 700 barrel and a MackBros MB762L can.
