.308 Winchester

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Remington 700P

155 Lapua Scenar
46.8gr RL-15
Winchester Brass
CCI-200 primers
OAL - 2.855"
MV - 2895fps

This bullet is jumping almost .1" to the lands but still gives me 5 shot groups that are .5".

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

LRB '14
22" Rock Creek

New Win brass - pockets / FH / ran mouths through the expander ball
175 SMK
Win LP
RE15

Temp 98 degrees / RH 21.8% / HG 29.7 / DA 4571

Accuracy load 43.8 grns - 2,635 fps

5 rounds = 0.96 MOA
4 of the 5 = 0.12 MOA

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

A new load I work up and been shooting in matches. Great numbers and groups. This load is very accurate out to 1000 yds and farther.

155 laupas (moly)
Laupa brass
2.850 COAL
GM 210
45.5 grs 8208 IMR

3040 fps
SDs 6

Lawton action ,30" krieger barrel 1/13 twist.

(This is a moly load work up to safe levels)

Shot in 100 degs. work great. No signs of pressure. At 1000 yds my son was shooting and I was pulling targets. They were still humming.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Lawton action w/ 22" bartlein 11.25 twist:

155 Amax, PPU brass, BR2 primer, 46gr Varget

COAL 2.806

Load averages 2905 fps

1/2 MOA groups @ 1200 elevation 107 degrees.

No signs of pressure even using the cheap brass so far...

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

i probably already posted in here, but here's mine:

44 gr imr 4064
2640 fps

165 gr sst moly

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Ive been playing with IMR 8208 and found a couple good loads for my Remington Tactical

168 A-max
43 grains 8208
Win brass and primer
OAL 2.825 (mag friendly)
around 2580fps

155 A-max
44.9 grains 8208
Win brass and primer
OAL 2.825
adv for 6, 2724fps

168 nosler CC
42.8 grains 8208
Win brass and primer
OAL 2.825
adv for 5, 2543fps

Good precision with all of the above and easy hits out to 700.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Modified the original load.... (10/16/10). Chrono'd 2/2/11

168 SMK
Varget
43.5 grains
2.304 COAL measured from the Ogive. (will not fi mag)
WLR primer
Once fired Federal case (trimmed to 2.10, flash hole deburred, no crimp)
Rem 700 SPS tactical - stock.
.258 MOA 5 round group @ 100 yds

I used 42-45 grains in .5 grain increments for the work up. I found the higher grain loads for Varget really opened up the groups. @ 44.5 it was 1.80" for 5 rounds.....

Update: Chrono'd on 2/2/11 through a Shooting Chrony Beta Master 10 ft from barrel. AVG Speed = 2482 FPS

I just prepped a bunch of twice fired FGMM brass and started sizing them. Using Imperial lube and an RL550 i found the force required to get the ram up into the standard Redding 308 die way more than any other brass and I was afraid of getting a stuck case. So I backed out. I had seen posts recommending ditching the Federal brass, but I see lots of posts here that say Federal is a standard brass choice. Any ideas why the press would give me so much more resistance on the Federal brass? Using the same set up, once fired Hornady and PPU brass sized like a dream. Am I paranoid? I have already stuck one case since I started handloading 308, so I'm snakebit.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

so i finally got around to tweaking my load for my .308

155 amax
44.6gr varget
LC brass
winchester large rifle primers
seated to lands (2.847" COAL in my rifle)

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Rem. LTR 20" barrel

175 SMK
Fed brass
collet neck sized only
44.5 varget 2580fps
average group size is around .5 inch

Should be supersonic out to 1000 but probably will never find out.

I'm using the once fired Federal brass due to the amount of the factory Gold Metal Match ammo I had purchased in the past. I'm also using the 550 press but with the basic Dillon dies. I have no issues with tight brass when resizing. All I'm using is the Dillon spray case lube. Something's got to be goofy with your dies or brass??

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

As a precaution pull your dies, use a spray can type brake cleaner and clean the dies. Use a lube pad to lightly lube an get uniformity. You might, MIGHT have build up in your die. Try that an good luck with it.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

My "do all" pet load,

168 Amax over 44.0gr Varget, kicked in the end with a Federal 210.

Out of my Lawton 7000 (18" Lawton barrel 1-11 twist MTU), comes out at an average M/V of 2571, ES of 21, SD of 7.

Running this load thru federal, pmc and winchester brass with no discernable difference noted in accuracy.

Will consistently shoot low .2-.3's if I do my part. Same load in my partners Tikka is running low .3's out of a bone stock rifle.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

My hunting load:

Lapua brass(or Sako brass for my other rifle so i dont get my ammo mixed)
Federal match primer
43.5grains of VV N540
Coal 73mm

Very nice load. No need to re-zero my rifle while using my Lapua load. Hits the same spot at 100m. This is a hot load as well!

Not if you have the proper tool. You will break the standard deprimer pin on an RCBS die, if you try to use it. I have used a Lee depriming tool, for years without issue.

Good luck

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

10-4 & Thanks, its been over 20 years since I reloaded any LC and I thought I recalled needing a special depriming tool due to the crimp the military puts on their primers.

Anyone have a .308 load that matches the Black Hills 175 Match BTHP ammo...

Using RL-15 ?

Thanks ALL information would be great...

These are shot out of factory Remington 700's...

Thanks

Winchester "few" times fired brass. Other info on targets. Paper target is 100yrds-steel target is 12" plate at 400yrds. I'm hoping for a recipe with Varget, since that's what I'm running in my bolt gun load and .223 load. I'm holding 2.2mils for the 400yrd target.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

@ pickpick

I have almost the same rifle as you do and my best loads for it with varget have been 42.5 and 44 in LC brass w/cci LR and 178 amax. 44 varget, LC brass and 175 SMK shot well too. I'm currently trying to find a load for 175 smk on the lower end, 42.5 was okay but not great.

I did not have good luck with any lighter bullets.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Your previously posted target has a 43varget + 168 HPBT load. Try 43.5, 44, 44.5, 45, and 45.5 w/CCI LR primer. Make 3 of each. Take your time with them and watch for pressure signs when you get to 45.

I've tried lots and lots of loads and tbh the best have all been 175+ weight bullets with 42-44 grains of varget and CCI LR primers.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I started out trying to run my bolt gun load through it. 45.7vrgt and 168smk. Way too hot, real bad ejector marks and wouldn't group for nothing. I dropped back to the 43grain loads and was satisfied with the IMR4064 load with 91/2 rem primers. But, used my last rem primers and I'm trying to get the varget to be the powder. I'll trying bumping up the powder and see how it goes. Thanks.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I have always been a varget fan, but here is my new favorite load.
Note***This load is worked up for my rifle. Please start low and work your way up..
.308/25" Tube
IMR 8208:46.3grns.
Sierra 155smk (2156)@2.865oal
CCI LRP
BH Brass
I am getting 3100fps, ES less than 20fps. Shoots like a laser for a .308
Worked loads up too 3200fps but started to see pressure signs on primer and sticky bolt lift.

Enjoy.

I've also had similar luck with my Armalite AR10T.

Rifle specs: ARMALITE AR10T LW barrel CUT TO 18"
7.62 NATO chamber

Winchester case
FED 210M primer
RELOADER 15 44gr
175 SMK
Mag length

Crono average 2400 (*correction* this chrono data was with a 43gr charge, will chrono the 44.0 gr load as above and post back) fps just about at sea level, which I am satisfied with. Load is good for at least MOA consistently with me on the trigger.

*44.0gr load did 2490 fps 5 shot avg. Sea level, about 85* temp.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

ok, with my latest lot of varget, its really slow (like 50-100fps) im thinking about switching to something different, possibly imr8208. is it temperature sensitive or is it fairly stable like varget is? and how will it load compared to varget?

Yes +1 for the RELOADER 15.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

If your using a factory tube... PSS... Tactical...Varmint...

Anything remeington had or is using in a 1-10 and 1-12 twist...

Try this:

RE-15 @ 43grns.
175 Sierra BTHP Match Kings
WLR or CCI primers
OAL 2.8

It was UNDER or AT 1/2 MOA in my guns when i did my part...

I used this load for 1K matches at Ft. Benning and its ON at 1K with 36 MOA.

Matt. (LEO SOUTH GA.)

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

for shorter ranges i like:

168 smks
44.4 grains of RE-15
CCI BR-2's
win brass
2.800 coal

for longer ranges, i use a pretty standard load

175 smks
45.0 Varget
CCI BR-2's
win brass
2.800 coal

this is out of a 22" rock 5r, 1/11.25 twist

In other words , try playing with your seating depth .

Have you tried a different chronograph? That seems impossible.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

ok, so weird thing happened, i went ahead and ran a work up as far as 46.5gr of varget, and both lots started to even out at around 46.1-46.3gr loads. so i guess its out to the range to load up some more and give it a go round.
