Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Larue OBR 1:11.25 Twist 20inch

M118LR clone using Varget

175Gr SMK, 42.5gr Varget, LC 07 LR Brass [trimmed, not weighed], magazine length

[Not even remote pressure signs.]

String 1 - 9 Shots - Warm Rifle (as oppsoed to cold or scortching hot):

Low: 2548.41(ft/sec)
High: 2567.87
Adv: 2558.00
Variation: 19.46 (ft/sec)
SD: 7.21

1: 2553.79
2: 2558.65
3: 2553.25
4: 2567.87
5: 2564.61
6: 2564.07
7: 2548.41
8: 2562.44
9: 2548.95

Grouping was about 1 inch... 4-5 shots in the center at about 1/2 inch, rest circling around the edges about 1 to 1.25 inches. [Second time using the rifle...]

Seems like a winner in a Larue 20 inch OBR.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Anyone know the correct oal of the LR m118 sniper ammo(the real stuff) the military uses for the m40a1 and a3, and how much powder is used, i've read that they keep there ammo around 2550 to 2580fps with the 175smk.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I read above that a few people were using .335 bushing with Redding die.

My question is what was distance where bullet made contact with lands and grooves. Like maybe .002". I know all rifles may be different and that some shoot better with more jump or less jump than others.

I just purchased TRG-22 and I need to find a place to start as far as that figure goes.

I have a TRG-22 and have had good success with 155 SMKs over 44.6 gns of Vhit N540.. Lapua brass (once fired and neck sized) and Fed Match 210 primers. Seated .0200 off the lands so 2.820" OAL with 2.2550 to OGIVE using Hornady/sinclair comparator. Getting approx 2710fps. These fit nicely in the TRG magazine too.

In competition in the UK she scored 50.8 @ 600yds which is 10 bulls @ 13" including 8 v-bulls @ 7.8" so we can therefore equate that to 1.3MOA @ 600yds for 8 out of 10 shots.

@ 1k she did 46.5 (i.e 5 v-bulls @ 14.4") so 5 into 1.4MOA. Obviously at that distance pilot error and conditions are very dificult to control so the other 5 flyers I can live with.. all within oil drum kind of size.

I was tempted to try Scenars but to get them anywhere near the lands they won't fit comfortably in the mag. I could single feed but I don't like being restricted so binned the idea... happy with my SMKs anyhoo!

About to try 175 SMKs ala Brad Sauve of F-TR National Championship fame.

43gn Varget & .0180 off the lands. so OAL will be 2.8350" and 2.2570" to OGIVE.

I have the rounds made up with 10 of this spec to test and an initial work up from 38gns in 0.5gn increments to err, as always, on the side of caution.

I should add to that that I also use Sentry Solutions Smooth Kote instead of oil in my barrel. Don't moly coat my bullets though.

Seating depth to reach the lands in your TRG may vary slightly from another TRG.

As a SWAG load a little short of the full length capacity of your SAKO magazine. Make a dummy round and use a black sharpie to blacken the bullet below the tip to the case neck. Test chambering it if you see marks around the circumference near the ogive or where the bullet starts to taper differently then seat it deeper by about .005" until you don't have those marks then seat about .005" deeper than that. Start low and work up.

This one measures .315" center-to center.

For this rifle, this charge of 43.0gr Varget is a "passable" max load with a 180smk. Primers are pretty darn flat at that charge, and the bolt is just barely getting tick sticky. There isn't any measurable casehead growth, and no ejector marks.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Vita Vohri N550 starting load 44.6 grains worked up to 47.0 in temperatures below 45* no pressure issues.

Above 45* but below 60* 46.6 grns was safe. Slight flattened primers.

Above 60* 46.0 - 46.2 grns was safe. No swipes, brass not over worked, easy bolt lift.

Out of my 10tw 28" obermeyer elevation was 30 moa at 1000 @ 1500ft at a recent F-Class state match.

Fully prepped Winchester brass, 185 grn RBBT,length to the ogive 2.218.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Went to the range today with a .308 beater with a 16.5" barrel.

Did not get to reach out to 200 or 300 yds, but at 100 the 155 SMKs(2155) were doing some magic. I had two loadings. One was 45.0g RL15 and the other was 46.2g RL15. Both shot well with the edge going to the 45.0g load. I had no pressure signs with the heavier charge even though the temperature was close to 90 degreees.

155g SMK (2155)
45.0gr RL15
CCI BR Primer
Winchester Brass

155g SMK (2155)

There was a noticeable difference in recoil. Anybody have an idea what the velocity might be for these two loads from a 16.5" barrel?

I guess you are talking original M118 then.

Please note that military chronos then had a midpoint of 78 feet, or 26 yards.

Run your JBM with 25-yard increments and you'll see how much *faster* they are at 10 or 15 feet.

But for OAL, that's what I get too. For old M118. Never had any of that new-fangled M118LR stuff. Still have some M852, which was when life started getting MUCH better with military ammo.

168g Hornady A-Max over 42.0gr IMR 4064. Prints sub .5" at 100yds.

Lots of the above mentioned loads will work. It's up to you to figure out which one works best for you. These are all just suggestions from other guns. YMMV. TINSTAAFL.

Will start over again:
TRhe only thing better than a good day Piping is a good day at the range. Have dope on an M-118 clone for a 24" barreled 1:10 platform:
Day: Sunny,from SW
Temp: ~ly 50F.
Wind: from the 6:00 ~ly, 5mph
Loading:
Powder--44.5grns Varget
Brass--LC 85, trimmed to 2.0415
Primer--WWLR
COAL--2.775
Heads: Lapua 170grn. FMJ rebated boattail
Velocity: Extrapolated from loading tables--2700fps
Primers post firing: smooth, flat, good F/P dimpling, primers radiused at edges no excessive case pressure. Easy feed, easy extraction.
This is particular to my Rifle [Savage 10fcp] regard all figures given, with care and caution. Observe all safe practices.

Action: Savage 10-fcp
Day: sunny from the S/W
Wind: < than 5mph from 6:00 position
Temperature: ~ly 50 degF.
Heads: Lapua 170FMJ Rebated Boattails, sorted by weight, amazingly consistent.
Brass: LC-85 sorted by age, full length sized, trimmed to 2.0415
Primers: WWLR
Powder: Hodgdon Varget 44.5 grns.
Velocity: No chrono, extrapolated from loading tables @ ~ly 2700fps, could be down some due to cool ambient temperature.
Condition of primers after firing: flat, radiused edges at pocket, minimum FP dimpling, good load
Brass after firing: easy extraction
Three cleaning rounds fired prior to work up
Barrel cleaned.
Eight rounds fired off Harris bipod rest at 100 yards, scope zeroed for 200 initially. Mil'd down and dropped eight rounds in the 1:00 position in the "X" ring.
Extreme spread of group 1" with CL to CL periodicity </= to .500" when measured from any point in the group, absolutely no breakout present.
