308 with 110 vmax's

I have searched this site and cannot find any info on loading a 308 with 110gr vmax's. I am loading them in a 700VS (varmint synthetic) with 24" bbl. Do any of you have any good information for what has worked for you? I an new here and have not yet mastered the search option. If this question has been addressed I am sorry. I will keep trying to search this topic.

Here's a load from a buddy of ours. As always, work up to this load.

110g VMAX-
49g H335, Win Brass, Fed 210M primer- 3300 fps.

I'll be loading up some of these this summer when fur season is over. I think they will be a big hit. Pun intended. I'll try to use the new 8208 powder as well. If you look at the velocity and bc, we shoot similar bc's and speeds with the .223, so really there is no trajectory difference.

He was shooting it at 300 yards, and was shooting good. It was a Rem 700 with a custom barrel, IIRC.

I use 48.0 gr. of Varget and get around 3200 fps out of a 26" bbl. Accuracy is excellent. You might also want to look at the Speer 125 TNT. Its also a great varmint round. 48.5 gr. Varget gives me a little over 3100 fps.

This is with Lapua brass and 210M primers. COAL was around 2.700" with both bullets. Don't even bother trying to get close to the lands with these bullets.

I am shooting these over 44.5 grns RL 10x with acceptable accuracy, nothing amazing but they really whack things good. I am going to do some load development with Nosler 125 BT's and see if those will shoot better, they are a higher BC bullet with a longer bering surface that should work out a little better than the stubby 110's. Win 748 will push these to 3200fps as well.

Heres some data from Ramshot pertaining to TAC powder and the 110 vmax. I have not tried it out yet.

We suggest the following.
Caliber: .308 Winchester.
Barrel length: 24”
Powder: Ramshot – TAC®.
Bullet weight: 110 grains.
Start load: 45.6 grains (2875 – 2975 Ft/p/sec)
Maximum load: 50.5 grains (3250 – 3350 Ft/p/sec). Full case

I have a number old take off barrel lying around.
I have a number of old 1903 Turkish Mauser action lying around.
I have a number of old take off sporter stocks lying around.
I have a 308 reamer lying around.
I have Devcon Steel putty lying around.
I have #45 and #46 Weaver scope mounts lying around.

So I made some 308 rifles.

One thing they can all agree on... they shoot Vmax bullets well.

Here is my wimpy Vmax load:

This bullet with W748 has worked well for me in the past. Accuracy was right around .5-.6 MOA in a stock Rem 700 VS. Can't remember the powder charge so work up using a load manual.

I've used Sierra 110gr JHP in .308 Win with 46.0gr - 48.0gr Varget in Lapua brass with Fed 210m primer at 2.650" COAL in my Savage 10 and get sub .5" accuracy for 5 rounds at 100y.

this works for me. Not near overpressure.

.308 Winchester 110 grain Hornady V-MAX with 44.0 grains of Hodgdon H4198 gets +3300 fps.

Start 10% below this load and work your way up. Beware of pressure signs!

The really hot load I use is 50.0 grains of Hodgdon Benchmark. no kidding that this load is over recommended safe load pressure! But if you're a Benchmark fan and willing to set back your barrel back on a regular basis, this is pretty fast (3400 fps) and flat shooting for a .308.

No experience with your bullet, but have shot a good many of the Sierra .30 cal varmint bullets. Accuracy is great. I cannot remember the specs, but I used the Sierra Manual and got great results.

AA2460 with max book loads gave me 3300fps and 3/4moa groups which was about par for the rifle, unbelievable mayhem on squirrels.

How did these load work out for you? I talked with Hogdon this morning and they said between 47-52 grains of Varget is just about ideal for this round.

I use 47.8 gr.f IMR 8208 XBR and get 3200 fps from a 24" AR10T. Es of 20 SD of 8 for five shots. .714" group for those five, and .292 for three of the five. Easy on the brass, and VERY temp stable. Hard on prairie dogs though.

This is out of an M700 with a Bartlein tightbore barrel cut to 18.5 inches. It's not the same bullet but it's close. No pressure signs.

I use this for prairie dogs and get just shy of 2900 FPS out of my 20 inch 700 LTR.......

Rather than make a new thread, I'll ask those in the know here:

I've got a POF P-308 with a 16.5" barrel and want to load up some 110 VMAX's for varmints, and I have a ton of reloading data already. Curious, should I try H322 or Varget first with this barrel length? My gut says H322, as it burns faster. I'd like to maximize both accuracy and velocity(just like everyone else does), but minimize muzzle flash as I'll be shooting at night also.

Those are some pretty accurate loads with the 110 v-max.

The gamer in me thinks the 110s should recoil lightly and allow fast followup shots? I'm thinking use it in heavy metal for 3-gun. How is the recoil compared to typical ball ammo?

Another question why isn't this dramatically light for caliber a problem in barrels designed for much heaver projectiles?

the recoil is very very light,
i was using the load in a match which is 5 targets each with 10 rounds fired on each target in 60sec very easy follow up , i usually use a 185 scenar dramatic difference in recoil , no twist/torque
even in a 1-11 barrel its still accurate though the 1-12 is better , most of the AIs are 1-12 great for vermin [very expol;osive or head shots, also great for speed comps out to about 300y as at 3400fp wind was notmuch problem

It would be an easy transition form using the AR15 and 55/60 gr. bullets around 3200 fps, to a .308 110 gr. at the same velocity. Trajectory should be nearly the same. Barrel torque is nil, and you're still pushing a bullet twice as heavy as the AR15 at the same speed, so there is a bit more recoil, but it's nothing really.

Same here! I had annealed my first batch of cases and didn't want to waste my match bullets in them on the remote (

) chance I had ruined them by over cooking them!

I used;

1) Sierra 110 Varmint bullets
2) 44 grains of Varget
3) Annealed BHA brass
4) WLR primers
5) COAL 2.75 (Them be some short bullets!)

Accuracy was surprisingly good given that I was a little nervous firing them at first and all the more so since I had just thrown these loads together to see if the cases were still worthy!

I used 47.8 gr 8208. I've shot these from a 10 and 11.25 twist, with no discernible difference.
