Ok, I am in the early stages of building a 338-300 RUM (same as 338 EDGE), meaning everything is on the way except the bottom metal.

I want to use the Wyatts detachable box magazine and am curious what OAL people are using for the 300gr SMK in the EDGE. Don't want to buy DM setup if can't use it.

While we are at it, please share some data and velocities.

Thanks in advance! -JW

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

We built one a couple of years ago but I can’t remember the COAL. 300SMK's with H1000 were the main diet and it loved them. The rifle was a single shot. I've built several 300RUM's and installed a Wyatt’s extended box in each. My 300RUM Reamer was ground for the 210 Bergers (.104" freebore) and the Wyatts Box is almost full, even though it offered an additional .110" in seating length. I suspect your DBM will also be full. If your hell bent to build one and mag feeding it, I'd wait until my DBM came in, build a dummy round that fit it and have the reamer ground for the required freebore. Send the dummy to PTG and let Dave sort out the details. That’s really the only way to be absolutely certain it'll work. Good Luck.

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

The guy that is doing the work gets his reamers with no freebore because he cuts it seperate from the chamber. I guess a more accurate description of my concern is I would like to feed the gun with a box magazine, but i dont want to do so at the cost of having to seat the bullets too deep and have a handicapped magnum rifle that wont shoot close to maximum velocity.

Still looking for load data with velocity, OAL, charge weight/type, length and twist of bbl. The barrel will be a 28 inch 1/10 twist but results from any length are appreciated.

Thanks for the response.- JW

Who's building the rifle? Make a dummy that fits in your magazine and throat for that.

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

I realize that can be done but the 300 gr smk is a long ass bullet and I don't want to loose too much case capacity by seating it too deep. I don't know what velocities people are getting out of the round and figured I might get enough data on here to get an idea of how much could be lost and about what people were getting out of the round. I will make it a single shot before I let it shoot 2600 fps because the case is so full of bullet there is no room for powder. Follow?? Thanks again- JW

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

I know what you’re saying. Make it a single shot and load accordingly. I've shot the Edge, follow up shots are going to be rare unless they're at steel. 93.0 grains of H1000 was pushing a 300 grain SMK at over 2800fps on the one we built. I simply made mention of the 300RUM as it's the parent case to the Edge. With free bore of .100", a Wyatt’s box is full with a 210 grain Berger, another long bullet. The extended Wyatt’s box offers an additional .110" of seating length.

The .338 300 grain SMK is a long bullet, that’s been my point all along. If you want a mag feed .338 build a Lapua, if you build an Edge make it a single shot, I think it'll be too long for a magazine.

Whos your smith?

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

Hi if using the Wyatts you will not have a long enough mag the longest extended internal Wyats works a treat but i have a 338 WBX that is an edge improved with a 60 degree shoulder get the Seekins mag system if you want a detachable as they have a 3.9" internal length and the 300gr matchKings are awsome in the edge loaded through one.

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

We run them at 3.82" OAL with the 300gr SMK. This gives around .050" off the lands. They fit in the Seekins bottom metal just fine. They will also fit in the internal Wyatts magazines that way you can still use your BDL setup. The Edge likes to jump a little with the 300's from what we have found.

We load, and my customers load 92-94 grs of H1000, CCI250 or Fed 215M, 300gr SMK. Velocities run 2860-2920 out of 30-31" barrels. I would guess you would see somewhere around 2800 out of a 28" barrel.

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

Thanks everyone. I will be checking into the seekins setup. H-1000 seems to be the powder of choice, gotta get some.

Roscoe, the fellow doing the work is Mr. David Christman in Delhi LA. He built me a 260AI some time ago and I love the gun. He is a great guy.

Lets see some more loads < 3.9 OAL if anybody has any. If you guys can't tell, I like velocity but I realize in this case I'm not working with a speed demon. Always have to have all I can get though.

Thanks again everyone and lets keep the loads coming.- JW

I hear good things about David, I'm sure he builds one hell of a rifle. I got my hands on one of the loaded rounds from the Edge we built. 3.937" is the COAL and he's .005" off the lands. Since the maximum opening in a Remington LA mag well is 3.900"ish and the Seekins magazines will support 3.9" I'd opt for a COAL of 3.800" to 3.850" and have the throat reamed for what ever jump you desire. After looking at the loaded round again, 3.800"ish would be fine and would fit in a Wyatts box as well. Good luck with your project.

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

I have ran two different 338 EDGE's. One built by Defensive Edge and the other by Kirby Allen. The load I am using is 94gr. Retumbo at OAL of 3.785. with 300 SMK's. Both rifles have the BDL type setup with Wyatts Extended Box magazine. The Defensive Edge has a 28" barrel and averaged 2675fps and the rifle by Kirby Allen has a 30" barrel and averages 2850fps. YMMV

Re: 338-300 RUM (EDGE) OAL???

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the help. Can't wait to get it going. Seekins looks like it will be my choice.

More loads would be great if anyone has any!

Thanks again guys. - JW
