Im looking for some info about the 338 edge im thinking of building off of a remington 700 action. Im curious about some of the ballistics that you can get as well as any specific load data anyone has to give me a starting point and different options to try.

My second question is what exactly I need to do for brass preperation. Is there any factory brass being made since this round has been out for a couple years or what is the process to blow out the 300ultra brass to hold the 33 cal bullet?

Any advice and or experience would be appreciated.

Carlock is the daddy of the 338 Edge. There is a good bunch of load data there too.

I've built a couple on Savage actions.

You have to make the brass. Make it from 300RUM brass. You can buy 338 Edge dies from a couple places, but is is much cheaper to use cheaper dies to do the same thing.

I use a set of Lee 338RUM dies. The Lee FL die has a great tapered expander to size the neck from 308 to 338. You can also use the FL die to bump the shoulder back as needed. The Lee seater works decently well also. For full length sizing, I use a RCBS 375RUM FL die that I got cheap off ebay. I just removed the 375 expander/decapper rod. All 3 dies cost less than $60.

Re: 338 Edge Info

SO I have another question geargrinder. If I was to get custom hornady dies specifically for the 338 and run the 300 RUM brass through them am I going to run into any problems?

Re: 338 Edge Info

You won't have any problems once you run the expander ball through the neck.

I run 90.3 gr of H1000 with a 300 SMK and Federal mag primers. I get about 2880 fps out of it. I've run up to 93.5 in it. H1000 has some swings from pound to pound so try and get 8# if you can.

I run a set of the Carlock Redding dies. I might have been able to get away a little cheaper but, I wanted the least amount of guessing when I built the rifle.

Re: 338 Edge Info

I settled in at 93.5 of H1000 behind a 300 SMK, Avg 2820 with an Sd of 12.

I have a Pac Nor Barrel on a Savage action, a little short at 27 inches, which is why i'm a tiny bit low in velocity.

But it's a third Minute at a hundred and easily in the ten inch range at twelve hundred.

Just what I've had to work with so far, and a half a grain, (running up when I tested the gun the first time) although it doesn't seem like it should, was a major difference in group size, and shrunk the ES and Sd significantly.

And when I built my brass, I dipped the neck in Mobil one before I run them in the 338 sizer, it's a little easier on everything, in my opinion, then I clean the crap outta them before I load them.

Re: 338 Edge Info

Thanks for the info... Has anyone been running the 300 gr Berger out of the edge yet?? Ive also been reading that the edge is also referred to as a 338/300 ultra and the dies for that arent to bad. A little bit cheaper for sure than Carlocks dies. Any info on those?

Re: 338 Edge Info

I have been running the 300 grn Bergers gen 1's but only have a few left over 90 grains oh H1000, right at 2810. Rock Creek barrel with sub 1/2 inch groups. I have the Gen 2's but haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Re: 338 Edge Info

We have been trying out the 300gr Bergers....using the same powder charge as our 300SMK's....93gr H1000. Running at 2950 using a .818bc seems to work out pretty well out to 1500. .010" off the lands is where I have found the best accuracy with them.

Re: 338 Edge Info

Travis, I know you shoot 5C's and sometimes they shoot a little faster but 2950 is smoking fast for a 338Edge unless you have a longer than 30in tube or some sort of hybrid throat how are you getting that kind of speed?

Re: 338 Edge Info

This is out of my personal rifle with a 31" barrel. The 30" barrels are running 2920 with the Bergers without any problems. Of the 30-40 of them I have built, they all are really close to the same. I normally throw my cases away after 7 firings, but other guys continue to run them up to 10 firings. The cases are cheap and I figure I got my money out of them at 7 firings. The Broughton's do run a little faster. We have shot Shawn's ammo in our rifles with the same results. Here is the norm from my 338 Edge builds:

30" 300gr SMK: 2890-2900
30" 300gr Berger: 2900-2920

28" 300gr SMK: 2850

I don't have any guys with the 28" builds that are running Bergers. I will try to get them to run some and get a velocity...my guess is the same 20-30fps more with the same charge weight. These velocities have been tested out to 2k with the SMK's and 1600 with the Bergers.
