Same with me.....I'm a rookie but picking up quickly. Bought a nice rifle like I wanted and tooled up for reloading. The only thing I went "budget" on was my initial reloading equipment. I wanted to make sure reloading was for me before I thought about buying electronic powder dispensers and giraud case trimmers. Now that I love reloading and load development, I have upgraded.

But the rifle......Not going to list my budget but it was more than 4k (w/optic) and it was my first .308 AR. Buy once cry once. I wasn't about to start small and work my way in to this. Gun shoots as well too! I learned on this gun and as I get more experienced, the gun shoots better as my shooting skills refine. I absolutely did not want to work on my technique over and over to later find out the rifle was junk and that's why I was kicking rocks. If you want to really do it right, go big once and never look back. 4K will buy a very nice custom rifle. You might even be able to get a nice optic on it for just a tad more. If you start small and work your way up, you will have invested twice the money or more!

Guns, shooting, reloading, etc are not rocket science. Any idiot can do this and do it well. There is no need to "work your way up".

Might as start off right from the starting gates.. buy something you enjoy looking and fondling at night. I really love shooting and working on the guns, but the other third of the fun is owning the good shit and looking at it.. like a nice Picasso painting.

+1 to get the optic, rings, (and rail if needed), then use the rest for the rifle itself. With a 4k budget it will be enough to get a nice rig ready to go anywhere.

No Sig love in here? I have two 716s (stuck an aimpoint and cut the barrel to 14 inch on one, 1-4x on the other) and I love them. I was skeptical at first because I honestly just dont trust Sig anymore, but after getting the first one, I had to have another. I havent gone past 700 meters yet, but it had no problem hitting it off a 1-4x with Hornady 168 gr Amax, and best groups came of Black Hills 168 gr Amax with all 3 rounds fitting under a dime at 100 yards. Ive only got maybe 60 rounds through my scoped Sig, so we will see how it does with a few hundred more and maybe if I get a bug up my ass, some real optics to stretch it out to 1,000. For now I enjoy a "battle rifle" setup though. Only downside is they are a bit portly with everything being metal, but they shoot incredible! I still want to try out the new Colt as well, but so far im very impressed with these. Oddly enough I havent heard such great things about the 516s in 223, but putting the two next to each other, there is quite a difference in construction.

I have A JP LRP-07 and love it. Do some research and pick which top manufacture you like best. My advice is to try and find someone who might have the rifles that you are interested in and give them a feel, it all comes down to personal preference. You cannot go wrong with any of these. JP Enterprise, LMT, Larue, Gap, Lwrc, Knights Arn. are all good choices.

So I have decided to get the LMT MWS now i'm looking for advice on barrel length I'd like to get out to 800 yards with the weapon. I also need advice on some good optics. I want something that will be good out to 800 yards have decent eye relief and be fairly light on this platform. I have looked into the NXS 2.5 x 10-32 it looks appealing what say the masses. Thank you all for your advice on the weapon as well I'll be placing my order next month for it.

For an optic that will suffice for 800 yards+ I would go with the Nightforce 3.5-15X50/56. It's heavier and bulkier than the 2.5_10X32 but for me the 10X is just not enough magnification the 800 yards. The 16" CL LMT MWS is one of the 308 platforms I own but I wish I had gotten one of the longer barrels. Maybe someday when $$ permit I will.

It's not that hard to put an AR together. I had Rainier put together my first upper ($125) and all-told got a great rifle out of $2300. And that includes a Rainier UltraMatch barrel, JP low-mass BCG, JP Captured Silent Spring, Geissele SSA-E trigger. I put together the lower after watching a few Brownells videos. It took less than 30 minutes and I also know what makes her tick. By pre-installing the ambi bolt release and take-down pins, Mega takes care of a couple steps for you as well. IMO, there must be some significant profit in clicking the LEGOs together.

A lot of these rifles are heavy too. Mine comes in @ 7.8 lbs. with the flash hider and 7.6 with just a thread protector.

I have an LMT, an LWRC and a KAC. All of them were under $4k with their optics. I would probably pick the LMT if I could only have one. You can probably get one for under $3000 if you are willing to wait and look (I only paid $2050 back in September), and then put a something like an HDMR or, if funds are tight, a Weaver 3-15 tactical.

Im not going to get in the debate and my opinion on the topic would be jaded, But I would like to clarify that the GAP-10 uses, P-Mags, KAC, Larue, or DPMS Mags. Not Armalite as somone posted.

Second, Cartman, The Price for a Jewell trigger is 265 Installed and tuned (says that on the site) . IE if you send your rifle in for a Jewell we charge $265 to dissemble rifle, Install trigger tune it, test fire, which includes the trigger.

3rd, I dont know why everyone seems to be Peeved that you hear about GAP on here alot. Its because we build good stuff and stand behind it. its also because I have been on this site since 2002 which is along time.

I am really impressed with my LMT MWS. It shoots sub MOA (1/2 to 3/4 groups) and is very well made. No issues or problems. With a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 Mil/Mil and BUIS it is a hell of a good weapon for my needs.

probably in that order.i have seen/shot the JP and the LaRue and they are both nice.i would say the JP is geared more toward accurate shooting and the LaRue is geared more towards combat.i have never fire a GAP,but i want to get one.they look very nice and are priced better than any of them.you could buy the GAP and still have money to upgrade whatever you wanted or get a nice tactical scope.i don't see a lot of JP talk on this website and you don't hear a lot of people brag about them being 1 MOA guns gauranteed.but they are are.they are incredibly accurate and recoil like a .223.mine is a 1/2 MOA gun.

Everyone has such a religious personal preference when it comes to this question. I ride the brainwashed GAP 10 tsunami. It has never failed me and I also use Nightforce optics religiously. All the tier 1 manufacturers have products that usually perform better than the average shooters ability. Find friends with various rifles and ask if you can test drive them. Different rifles have different ergonomics for each shooter. I would also wear GAP 10 underwear if they made some.

I have a JP LRP-07 and it is outstanding. It is one of the best rifles I have ever shot or owned. JP lrp-07, Gap-10, Larue OBR are the 3 BEST semi-auto rifles that you can buy. The quality, accuracy, and reliability cannot be beat. Buy one of these and put some good glass on there like Schmidt & Bender, USO, or Swarovski Z6i and you will be ONE HAPPY PERSON. I have a JP lrp-07 with a Swarovski Z6i scope and there is not much that I cannot do with this rifle.

I have many friends with GAP's and they're shooters but, you're looking at a year + wait from today unless you buy a used one.

You're literally better off buying an Armalite/Noveske or decent quality upper/lower and just throwing it together yourself.

Longest wait you'll have if you build it "yourself" is your smith throwing it together.

I have an Armalite that's been completely customized at this point and it keeps up with the GAP's...

Other then that, I'd snag a POF -- personally.

I own an LMT MWS 308, love it, Sig 716, love it, I don't own many rifles I hate. I'd own a SR25. When I build up funds to get one, I end up blowing the money on something else. As someone pointed out on here, there is no need to start at the bottom.

5 years ago 600 yards sounded really hard, thanks to a lot of reading here, videos from many people on here, help from CS Tactical (others will offer up help on optic choices but Mike really helped me a ton) I don't even fret at it. My fun zone now is 800 to 1000 in the desert, just having a blast hitting targets, taking people out setting them up and hearing them blast steel is really fun.

Tips, watch every video of Frank's and read every damn thing Zak Smith has ever said. Not kissing ass, just they have done it all, answered it all, dealt with absolute retards and misconceived notions/ideas. There are some really good guys on here helping with ideas, some folks are more religious about their weapons than Shiites cutting themselves.

Side note, when I talk about buying another 308, my wife gives some uber eye roll. I don't say shit when she talks about buying more shoes now.

I also have a JP LRP-07...and LOVE it! My final 3 in the decision process were the LRP, GAP-10, and OBR...similar to others here. When I decided to go 260, that eliminated the OBR (wasn't looking to re-barrel a new rifle.) The side-charge of the LRP, along with a nice chat with Ben at JP helped push me that direction.

Of all the people I discussed the JP and GAP with, I never had a single one say they didn't love them.

i do not have experience with the SR25 but i have shot the LaRue and i own the JP and both were/are flawless and extremely accurate at 1/2MOA or better at 100 and 200 yards.

I "got" both.

Got the DPMS SASS, then got the GAP. Right now, they're shooting "side by side". BUT I have just started load work up, on both rifles. We'll see. But my "Compadres" like the SASS more.It's "less finicky". Again just starting, with both rifles. Don't want to ruffle any feathers, but the SASS eats anything, and shoots great. This is an "on going project". The GAP prints better groups, so far, but just by a margin. The Mags are part of the issue. The Armalite's are a pain. Just me.

There are a number of good large platform ARs out there these days. I went with an OBR. My personal experience with the rifle has been stellar. It has been dead nuts reliable, and consistently at or just above 1/2 MOA out to a little over 800 yards. The reliability has been the most impressive feature. I don't clean it. It looks pretty filthy right now, but it goes bang everytime, and the bullets seem to fly true. I told myself I would clean it when accuracy degrades. Well, nearly 1,000 rounds later - bang--->ping

Some on here despise Mark Larue and tend to bad mouth his stuff for that reason. Sounds like some of the derision may be very well justified. Me? I don't care if he is Lucifer in drag, the gun is flat impressive...

Start looking for a deal on a USO or Vortex scope. Get a like new 1-6X for $1500+/-. They are out there, lifetime warranty.

Start looking for a LMT MWS, hopefully sanity will return and you'll pick up a cherry deal, $2500 +/-. The question is when, I don't have a clue.

OBRs/JPs are super accurate, but will cost $3500, if you can find one. What's the wait time now for an OBR? Good luck finding a Noveske N6.

I could only keep one 16" .308, kept my EMC. Soft shooting and many really good features (ambi controls, good buis, relatively light weight, suppressor ready).

Keep an eye on the For Sale sections, cash talks. I've seen items sell in just a few minutes. $4k should get you a very nice rifle, good luck.

that's what's on my POF with the 600yd Velocity reticle and I LOVE it! It's a great compromise between magnification, size and reticle for a AR10 platform. The reticle is a nearly perfect match shooting Sierra 168's around 2600fps out to the full 600 yards.

I have a LMT MWS 16"ss with 5R barrel. This is one of the finest rifles I have ever owned ,,,,, Bought it for 2800.00 about 6 mo. ago from Kentucky Guns..... Digests anything i put through it and shoots sub 1/2 moa at 100. Great buy if you can find one. Topped with a 5-20 x 50 Trijicon Aim accupoint........
