I am curious if anyone is running a necked up 408 Cheytac to 416. Is it worth the effort to get the better bullet choices at 416 and the higher weight bullet choices? What kind of speeds and barrel life are you seeing?

I have a spare 408 action. I might buy a bigger action next year and build a .50... but this is an experiment for my gunsmith and myself... we were able to scrounge a 37" 416 barrel and I had the action and a chassis laying around. We are currently awaiting the reamer. I will put info on my project up on here if anyone is particularly interested... if nothing else, we can scrap it a few hundred rounds down the road and put a 375 barrel back on it... i have a few of those laying around too.

That was our thought... We are hoping to get 2850fps from the 505 Warner... I am sure we will also test the cutting edge offerings and the A-Tip. My Gunsmith is very excited about those.

I know this is an old thread but I happened to stumble across it looking for something else. I been shooting a 416 CT for a couple years now, my current fav load for the Hornady 500g A-Tip is 132g of Retumbo with F-215M primer in a BAT model M action fitted with a 34" 1 in 11" twist Lilja barrel, MV is avg 2867fps, my best groups so far is .45 moa. No high pressure signs, extraction is easy. I recently picked up some Viht N-568 powder, burn rate is similar to Retumbo, so I'll give it a try.

I run the 375 CT with 400gr Lazer with 131.5 of N570. Very accurate load. The benefit of using N568 or N570 is better case fill as the grains are so much larger the Retumbo. I have only had one hang fire and that was with Retumbo so having good case fill is important.

Yes, I agree on the N-568 granules, they are large enough to jam my electronic powder dispenser, I have to hand spoon the stuff in.
I also like the old classic buffalo rifles, the 1874 Sharps are my favorites so last year I built one up on a C-Sharps reproduction action chambered in 500/416 Nitro Express, which is a creation from Krieghoff for their double & single shots, I tried 6 different powders in the test runs and found that N-568 was the best, it gave highest MV's lowest ES and best groups, no pressure signs and easy extraction, the stuff is pretty amazing in its performance.
