Re: 500ish scope?
You have to decide if you want FFP or SFP.
Since quite a bit of hunting is done in the early morning or early evening with reduced light, a SFP budget scope will have advantages over a FFP budget scope.
On high end scopes not so much.
For general hunting and range use, there is nothng wrong with a good SFP scope, they have fallen out of favor in some of the tactical market, but far more SFP scopes are sold for hunting AND target shooting.
In your price bracket, I would recommend the Nikon Monarch or Bushnell 4200 series. Both have very good glass and are covered by very good waranties. Elevation adjustment is a bit limited in both, but they can get you to 600 yards with a 100 yard zero with no problem. I would look in the 3-12 or 4-16 range. The Konus M30 tactical scope is pretty well liked and offers many features. I have a Millet TRS-1 that I have been very pleased with, though it was on a .223. The Weaver grand slam series and the Nitrex series have pretty good reps, they are Japanese made but have BDC style reticles, not mil-dots.
