Rifle Scopes 500ish scope?

Re: 500ish scope?

I was very impressed with my brothers Konus 6.5-24 M30 scope. It was very bright even on higher powers, tracked well an has excellent resolution. SWFA had then for $299.95 last time I looked, Optics Planet's price was quite a biy more.

Re: 500ish scope?

Without knowing how you plan to use it, all recommendations will proverbial shots in the dark.

My shot in the dark is the SS 3-9FFP or 10X, very reliable, great glass for the price.

If you decide on one of the chinese-made options above, good luck with that.

Re: 500ish scope?

I'd get the 3-9 SS, great glass for the price, can easily hunt, great for range work. (Not best for "long range", but it is ALWAYS a mistake to buy more magnification at the expense of glass quality. A good 3-9 will easily get you out beyond 600 yards - which is a useful starting point for "long range."

Re: 500ish scope?

You have to decide if you want FFP or SFP.

Since quite a bit of hunting is done in the early morning or early evening with reduced light, a SFP budget scope will have advantages over a FFP budget scope.
On high end scopes not so much.
For general hunting and range use, there is nothng wrong with a good SFP scope, they have fallen out of favor in some of the tactical market, but far more SFP scopes are sold for hunting AND target shooting.
In your price bracket, I would recommend the Nikon Monarch or Bushnell 4200 series. Both have very good glass and are covered by very good waranties. Elevation adjustment is a bit limited in both, but they can get you to 600 yards with a 100 yard zero with no problem. I would look in the 3-12 or 4-16 range. The Konus M30 tactical scope is pretty well liked and offers many features. I have a Millet TRS-1 that I have been very pleased with, though it was on a .223. The Weaver grand slam series and the Nitrex series have pretty good reps, they are Japanese made but have BDC style reticles, not mil-dots.

Re: 500ish scope?

The Bushnell Elite 4200 3-12x44 with illuminated FFP mildot reticle and matching mil turrets goes for about $650-$700. The glass is very nice even compared to my NF. Only thing is that there's not a whole lot of internal elevation so you may need to get a 20MOA base if you're gonna shoot out over half a mile.

Mil turrets are pretty darn handy. And it even has a side focus knob for parallax adjustment too.

Re: 500ish scope?

I ould say SS 3-9x42 as others have said. I got one new in the box with a rifle I bought here on the Hide. I have all USOptics on my long range guns and I was not disappointed with the SS. I sold it this afternoon to get a USO ST-10 that was for sale here at a good price but it was definitely a good scope especially for the money. I shot it this morning to 650 yds and it performed well...nice and clear and accurate adjustments. It would serve you well for your stated price. There have been 3 sold on here that I have seen in the last week.

You have to have 100 posts to sell in the Post Exchange section. I'm sure the same applies everywhere on this site. You might want to remove this post.

Re: 500ish scope?

A Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x has a mil-dot reticle and moa turrets. You will need a 20 moa base. It's $300.

The Bushnell 4200 3-12x has mil reticle and mil turrets, also has lit reticle. It is $850.

You DON'T want 1/8th moa turrets and you do want at least 50moa of elevation adjustment (and with that amount you will need a 20 moa base).
