I have a sig 556r (genII) that I am wanting to upgrade the optics on at the beginning of next year and could use some help as I'm trying to get a head start. Right now it wears a PA micro and Samson irons. Grew up shooting irons as I was taught by my father to be proficient with them before trying anything else. It will be used for hd/hunting/plinking/shtf. I go shoot every 2 weeks from 0-300 but out to 500 on occasion. I understand there is no perfect optic as each type has its own purpose. I like the idea of having magnification (1-4, 1-6) but am not sure how well that would work for hd (no military or LE experience). I have been eyeing the SWFA 1-6 but don't know if I should go that route, a t-1 or rd with magnifier. Have used scopes and red dots but I have never tried a magnifier and haven't heard a lot of good things about them either. Nor have I tried an ACOG or Browe. The short eye relief on those has always turned me away. I know that in the end I will have to figure out what works for me but any help to get me steered in the right direction would be very much appreciated. My budget will be around $1200 max for sight and mount. Thanks.

A low power variable 1-4, 1-6, 1-8 would fit pretty well for what you are doing. I love the true 1x scopes, as they give a seamless stereoscopic sight picture and are super fast on target with a daylight-bright illuminated dot. My favorite for the money right now is the Trijicon 1-4x24 with amber triangle....and needs no batteries. You ought to read this, if you haven't already: The variable, low power multipurpose scope review thread - Page 1 - AR15.COM

I've been through exactly the same decision process twice now, once with a $500 budget and another with a $1,600 budget. For $500, I did the Vortex PST 1-4. For $1600, a USO 1.5-6. I don't have an answer for your particular price range, but I do like the low powered variables.

I find 1.5X is the max I can run effectively up close. The true 1X is really superior for speed, but it was a compromise I was willing to make at the time (before all the 1-6 and 1-8 scopes came out).
