A lot of shooters use the 5R rifling like the M24 barrel's have. It seems to be very popular. The M40 barrels use 6groove rifling. Is there any pro's or con's between them or is one better than the other at long distance?

Re: 5R or 6 groove barrel

Short answer, No.

Some say the 5 groove barrels clean easier than the 6. I can't confirm this because I don't clean often enough to tell a difference. They also make 2, 3 and 4 groove designs too. Stick with any of the top 10 or 12 barrel makers and you likely won't be able to tell the difference. Better yet, ask your gunsmith who he recommends or who has the shortest lead time.

Re: 5R or 6 groove barrel

I like the 5r because it is noticably easier to clean compared to my 6 land rifles. Also, I have read that the bullet seals better in the barrel and with the design of the lands, the bullet has less deformation which end results makes it fly more consistently.

On "R" bbls., their advantages mostly apply to having odd-numbered lands/grooves, versus even-numbered. The lack of an opposing land/groove 180 degrees opposite is the detail. But certainly not a cure all.

Re: 5R or 6 groove barrel

For the most part there is no accuracy difference with the number of grooves.

I don't believe a 5R the bullets seal better and you get more velocity as some claim.

What I do believe in is that the 5R (odd number of grooves) and the gentler angle on the sides of the lands help with distorting the bullet jacket less and this helps with bullet failure. Especially with some of the thin style match jacket bullets. Bullet failure is more of a problem for a long range shooter than a short range shooter.

The way I clean my guns I don't see a difference in cleaning between a 5R and conventional style rifling.

A 6mm caliber barrel and shooting light weight shorter jacket bullets like 70gr. etc....don't like the 5R style rifling. They will shoot around 1/3 moa but no better. On the short light weight 6mm bullets go with conventional style rifling. I don't care if it's a 4 groove, standard 5 groove etc....they will shoot better. If shooting a 6mm barrel and shooting the 100gr. and heavier bullets go with the 5R. Again no accuracy difference there just with the light bullets.

Hi I have a Sauer 200takedown in 270win and I need to fit new barrel and want to ask what barrel twist and grooves would you guys recommend
Just get a 4 groove 1:10 twist.

Also, if you find a thread on Google search you might want to check the date of the last post before replying to the thread. If it is really old you might want to just start a new thread.

Frank, the answer is yes. Haha, guys Frank and I could do a podcast on this stuff, but we'd probably lose audience quick as we can get in the weeds quick. Land/groove width ratio, cross section, jacket thickness, jacket hardness, etc... That and his Cheddar accent mixed with my sudden scottish brogue outbursts may require subtitles.

Thanks for reply guys.
Hi what twist would you recommend 1:10 or 1:9?

Robert Gradous used to talk about how the advantage of even numbers of lands/grooves shows up on the lathe in the form of less chatter/high frequency vibration as a result of the symmetry in the lands and grooves. I'm not a gunsmith but I'd love to hear some other expert opinions on this concept.

Hi I am looking for unturned 270win 5R 1:9 twist 26" CM barrel price and to ship to Iowa Charles City. I have searched and nobody has that is stock in Bartlein and I would like to get this make
Thanks

So you want a straight blank. No contour. CM steel. What diameter? 1.200”?

No one to my knowledge would have anything like that in stock. We run 270 cal barrels every 12 weeks. Not sure when the next run is. I can check at work today.

That will be great if I can get one by the end of November that will be great as I only have 3wks to fit it then back offshore
Thanks
Anthony

Anthony, I just checked. The next run would be late Nov. or Dec. That's as close as I can nail it down for you right now. I cannot make any promises that you would have it by end of Nov. at all.

Let me know if you want one or not.

Anthony, just a word of advice from an ex custom barrelmaker. When Frank answers you on the forum, thats when you go full PM with him, get an order placed, and start deleting your posts about wanting a particular caliber/twist/etc. BC now there are 400 people placing orders to get in front of you. lolll!!!!
