Need some help from the hide....

A guy sent me this pic to see if I knew what was going on with his chamber. I know the smith that spun up this barrel (Proof CF 6.5 Creed), never heard a bad thing about him.

Brass only deforms on firing...WTF is causing this? No signs of over-pressuring. Could the chamber be shorted? How in the world would you get a flat portion for the shoulder to bump up against like this? I haven't reamed enough chambers to know, thought I'd ask those who are way more experienced than me on here.

Rifle is still dead on accurate, overall case length didn't change considerably...just the shoulder deformation.

He's shooting Hornady 6.5 ELD-X Precision Hunters, not reloads.

Any ideas?

Hahaha...it's fire forming for a new wildcat. The 6.5 FS...Flat Shoulder.

Once I get it SAAMI approved I'll send you guys a reamer. :ROFLMAO:

Thanks fellas, I'll let you know how it turns out once I get it sent to me.

My opinion is the barrel was threaded and chambered by a hack.
only way I would consider touching it would be to cut all threads off and start over. Threads are likely as poor as chamber.

Just....WOW....

We don't need no stinking shoulder to headspace! Get the case OAL just right and you're good to go...

I have no clue how this could even happen, sure looks like the "pre-bore" went far beyond the shoulder datum, how could it have possibly passed a simple go/no-go gage check?

I test fire/check function on every barreled receiver before it gets sent to the customer, an absolute must for me.

I think the guy is done with the original smith which is why he was reaching out to me for help (guy that owns the rifle is a friend).

I'll get him taken care of one way or another. May see if I can turn this one into a 6.5PRC barrel!

6.5PRC might work.

or 6.5SS which should push the shoulder even further forward

or be the first to 6.5PRC AI

Usually there's enough shank on Proof barrels I'd think you could push the shoulder forward .15" or whatever it is to get past that drill hole and keep it a creedmoor.

If that was a customer supplied blank, no way should the customer have to eat that.

Given enough quantity, eventually every builder is going to mess up. Bottom line is if you wreck a customer’s part, you replace the part. I don’t care if you blew up a customer supplied carbide reamer in a customer supplied CF barrel, you accepted the job, you are responsible. That said, the builder should be made aware of this and given the opportunity to make it right.
