6.5 Creedmoor 1:7 twist vs something else

Looking for some advice/education. I’ve read vast amounts of forum posts, articles and I’m still lost in the sauce. Currently building a 6.5CM and my stock is in the mail. Ordered a Bartlein barrel last week MTU profile 1:7 twist based upon a recommendation by Warner tool for their flatline bullets. However the sniperhide review of the flatline had a barrel with a 1:8.5 performing great at a mile. What’s the best twist rate for a 22” for long range? I know their are a lot of variables in this question so sorry for that but I’m a newb lookin for help, thanks for any and all advice/knowledge.

In a 6.5mm the 8-twist has been the default but a 7.5 or 7-twist will work just as well.

You can spin the solids pretty fast. 7 twist is fine. Just make sure the gunsmith chambers it with the correct freebore for the flatlines.

One of the only issues going with a faster twist is that you run the risk of damaging jackets and/or spinning bullets apart. At Creedmoor velocities, I doubt you're going to have any issues. Maybe if you decided to shoot 107's or 95's or something you could spin them fast enough to blow up.

Bullets blowing up is kind of case-by-case, too, though. I've spun 95 gr 6.5 Vmax's to 351,000rpm (1:8 twist, 3900fps) in a 6.5 SAUM and they seemed to be holding together well. Some people with 1:8 twist 6.5 creedmoors are blowing up 147's at 2600-2800fps...

At any rate, solids aren't going to fly apart at any velocity or twist you can currently achieve, so spin 'em up.

Honestly I don’t even know what “freebore” means exactly. After all the parts come in it’s all getting sent to spartan precision and I’ve heard nothing but good things about them so I’m not worried about that part of the process. I’ve got a lot to learn about the long range game but I’m getting there slowly but surly. Thanks for the comment and information.

Just make sure to tell them what bullets you are planning on shooting. If not, they will most likely use SAAMI spec, and the flatlines most likely won't shoot for shit out of that chambering.

Do you know what spec is needed if not SAAMI?

Make up a dummy round with the bullet you want to shoot at the length you want. The gunsmith should be able to cut the freebore for it.
