6.5 Creedmoor

Re: **6.5 Creedmoor Loads**

Surgeon Scalpel
142 smk, 41.2, 41.5, 41.8, 42.1, and 42.4 of H4350.
.02 off the lands.

All loads shot 5 shot groups under 1/2 moa.
41.5 & 42.1 shot in the teens.
No pressure signs so I am going to try and push it a little more. Looking for a load to use for matches this year.

How much do you guy's factor recoil into your load development? Trying to weigh the benefits of velocity vs. light recoil to spot misses easier from unconventional shooting positions. Obviously none of them are uncomfortable, but 42.1 and up recoiled significantly more. That was the first thing I noticed after pulling the trigger.

JCH, were you surprised by the velocity? I would have thought the 100gr would have been faster considering the 130 in your gun was at 2810 with a lighter charge.

Yes absolutely. The 45.0 grain load was compressed and showed no pressure. I was at the limit of speed with H4350.

Re: **6.5 Creedmoor Loads**

Finally got bore broken in. I have picked up about 85 fps. Same load same lot w/ 42.4 h4350 and 140 vld. 2.140 to ogive. Fgm210m. Was getting 2747 130 rounds ago. Now I'm at 2830 fps. Go figure.

With a 100 yard zero all I need is 12.2 moa to 600. Shot 15 shots at 520 yesterday with a 2" group. Damned creedmors are LASER BEAMS

Re: **6.5 Creedmoor Loads**

I'm running the 140 vld out of a Ga Precision Crusader 27" 8.5 bartlein. Load is 42.4 h4350 fgm210m, at 2.140 to ogive. 2885 fps. Tried the br2's and found my Es and sd were lower but was -30 fps. Doesn't really matter to me about the velocity but I had 200 of them already loaded with the fgm's.

So

42.4 h4350
2.140 to ogive
140 vld
Hornady brass neck sized with a .290 bushing
Fgm210m
2880 to 2885 fps from a 27" bartlein 8.5 twist.
Shoots 1 1/2 to 2" groups at 500 yards

Re: **6.5 Creedmoor Loads**

this is what I have found on my personal experien's. I have a broughton barrel 1:8 5C 24" barrel. Below 42.8 grains of H4350 the best accuracy I found was at 39.4, one holers. This is bull shit because it is just 2519 muzzle FPS. I am going to go over 43 grains looking for another accuracy node' hope I find it or will rebarrel. I am not picky , I am picky just looking for high velocity with 1MOA or less accuracy.

I don't know what the deal is!! I've got a 30" Broughton 5c 1:10 in .30 cal on a .300 win mag bedded and trued rem 700 action and it seems to like slower charges and lighter bullets. I told the guys at Brouhton what I would be shooting and that's what they recommended Go figure ??....

My buddy shot this at 800 yards with the factory 140 amax. I told him it was probably trigger control but still damn good at 800. He ended up dinging at 1200 that day. 43.0 moa with a 100 yard zero to hit 1200.

Ballistic:AE I believe it's 20 maybe 30$ at the most. It's my go to. Have several others but this one always puts me on a24x24 Ar 500 plate out to 1000 yards with chrono data

Re: **6.5 Creedmoor Loads**

Ran some 123g Amax Blems through my 6.5 Creed with 24" barrel. Oehler 33 Chron.

CONDITIONS
60 Degrees and rising
Sunny
4000' ASL
1-5 mph wind

123g's seated to kiss lands. CCI BR2's. Velocity Avg 4 shots.

H4350 (SD all single digits)
43.6g = 2917
43.9g = 2925
44.2g = 2941
44.5g = 2959
44.8g = 2980 (Near Max)

Varget (SD ran 6-18 fps)
38.5g = 2836
39.0g = 2855
39.5g = 2869
40.0g = 2899 (Near Max)

Re: **6.5 Creedmoor Loads**

Interesting. I just came across these same primers. 1k of them. What are they like compared to fgm210m ?? I know that the 210's give about 30 fps more than the br2's but br2's yielded lower spread. What's your take on it?? Or have you even shot the 210's??

I went to 47gr of H4350 and the 95 Vmax. @ Book length, my chrono read 3300 from a 26inch barrel. The book says 3224, and data at 700 puts me close to that.

That rifle is just going to piss you off with its performance. You had better save yourself some grief and send it to me for proper disposal.

Very nicely done, fella!!

Thank you Huck. It's freaking ridiculous how accurate it is. You got yours in yet? I've got about 300 130 jlk vlds if your interested. I bought 400 of them but my rifle LOVES the 140 Berger. So they are just sittin... I know you said you wanted to run the 130. If so just pm me and I'll give you my #

Beanland has all of my parts, but ETA is not until June 1st. I am as ancy as a schoolboy. I have thought about starting the stock up on bullets, but until I know what it likes, it doesn't make sense to worry about anything but primers, brass and powder. Dies are inbound off the PX and a Manners T6a should be ready in a couple of weeks.

I will keep the 308 as a trainer and for shooting subs, but the matches and hunting will fall to the 6.5cm...unless I tear down the 308 for another shorty in 6.5cm... :)

I've burned up close to 10k CCI200's through my 6.5CM's and they shoot superbly. I see no reason to switch to anything else at this point.

Agreed. I tried some cci br2's. my Es and sd went way down. The br2's are pretty much the cci200's with a little tighter quality control. Only thing I noticed was a 25 fps decrease in speed from fgm210m. But who really gives a hoot when they are shooting....

24" bartlein 5r
rem 700 action
41.5 h4350
fed 210
2.795 coal
new brass

going out to shoot this on sat over the chrony shoting 1/2 moa at 100 yds

went and shot over chrony today and it was 2701 would like to get it closer to 2800 going to ladder test next week

I've been working on loads for my GAP 6.5 CM using the 140 VLDs, 140 Hybrids and 130 VLDs. Barrel is a 27" Bartlein 8.5 twist. I used Aimsmall's loads as a starting point and I have to say they ran pretty well. I was also waiting on my modified case to and 6.5 comparator to get here so I could check my chamber. FWIW, I run the CCI 200 primers as that is what I have. They work well in the 308 loads I shoot. I have plenty of them in my stock, so making a switch to Fed 210s would not be easy. (Where can you get Fed 210s anyway.)

Here is the load data:

140 VLDs
42.5 H4350
CCI 200
OAL 2.810, comparator 2.150, .060" jump
2816 fps, 8.1 mil to 1K

140 Hybrids
42.5 H4350
CCI 200
2.140 on comparator, .082" jump
2806 fps, 8.1 mil to 1K

130 VLD
44.0 H4350
CCI 200
2.810 OAL, jump ???
2930 fps, 7.8 mil to 1K

I checked my chamber using the modified case and the 6.5 comparator and here is what I got for the 3 bullets:

140 VLD: 2.210" to lands
140 HyBrid: 2.222" to lands
130 VLD: 2.190" to lands

FWIW, the Hornaday Factory 140 AMax shoots at 2850 out of my rifle and is 8.2 mil to 1K

I have some 140 VLS loaded in .1gr increments from 42.5 to 43.1 to see if I can get a little more velocity out of the load, but, more importantly, see if I can find an accuracy node. Looking at Aimsmall's data it looks like the CCI 200s are about 35 fps slower than Fed 210s with the same load. I'm hoping I can do this on the 600 yard range at Peacemaker with the electronic target system. Will let you guys know how it turns out.

I too tried the 140 VLD after seeing Aimsmalls results. Don't know why I never tried them as that is what I shoot out of my 6.5x47L. For the Crredmoor, I just put them over my go to load of 41.7g H4350. Every 140 class bullet I tried shoots well with that charge. I jammed the VLDs .0010". Just did a small test with 4 shot groups at 100 and 510 yds. Going to do some more distance testing today to confirm velocity, but looks like 2850 or so. Will see how they do at 600, 800, 900, 1100 today.

510yds - the 4 shiny impacts,they might have all landed in the same spot had I had a solid point of aim. I was just holding center of a 12" square.

Very nice.

My experience with Hybrids in my 308 is they should not be as sensitive to seating depth as the VLDs, I'll probably seat these at .050" when I try them. Andrew (McCourt Ammo) said to start the VLDs .050" - .060" off the lands as a starting point. If you are running tactical matches I do not believe you ever want to seat the bullet in the lands. If you have to unload on a cease fire and the bullet gets stuck in the lands, you are pretty much screwed. (I learned that the hard way with my 308.) I'll probably run the same test Sunday afternoon with the 140 Hybrids seating them at 2.172" using the comparator. OAL ends up at ~2.840".

Thrusty, you'll have to bring it over to Peacemaker or Thunder Valley, which ever you are closest too.

I made it out to Peacemaker today and did some more load testing. All 140 VLDs loaded to 2.150 on the 6.5 comparator. (2.810 OAL) I loaded 20 round at 4.25 of H4350 and stepped up from there at .1 gr to 43.1 5 rounds at each step, all CCI 200 primers. I did a ladder test at 300 yards (the 600 yard range was not available. What I found was an accuracy node from 42.5 - 42.7. Also, above 42.8 the groups started to loosen up. I'm thinking of going with 42.6gr as the load.

To qualify to shoot on the Patriot range, 600 - 1000 yards, I had to shoot a 5 shot group at 100 yards under 1 moa. I did that with the AMax factory ammo and I shot a sub .5 moa group cold bore. (Thanks GAP) When I went back and shot the VLDs at 100 I was .2 mil low, so, base on the adjustment to my previous calculations, I am shooting closer to 2840 fps with the current load. I'm loading up 50 VLDs and 50 Hybrids for tomorrow and will shoot them on the 600 yard range.

I actually work at Peacemaker - I put in RSO duty on Fridays on the Independence Range and work with the electronic targets when we run F-Class and Benchrest matches. We will be having our first of the season long range precision match next Saturday (3/23)...will be shooting out to 1200yrds. I'll be shooting and RO'ing.

For those of you who haven't heard of us...

I wish I could be be at Peacemaker next Saturday, but I will be in Ohio with the wife for our anniversary. I will be there tomorrow as the 600 yard range will be open.

Something else to talk about is preparing the Hornaday brass. I had some experience with Hornaday brass loading 308 and I am seeing the same things with the 6.5 CM brass. I have been hitting the primer pockets with a uniformer, even brand new brass and it takes a fair amount of brass out of the pocket. I have also noticed the pilot holes aren't clean either, so it's probably a good idea to run a pilot hole reamer in the brass too. If it's new brass I also champher it before priming it and loading it.

Fired brass gets deprimed, primer pockets cleaned, pilot hole checked with the reamer, and then I run the uniformer. From there brass goes to the ultra sonic cleaner for 2 8 minute stints, followed by rinsing and drying over night. Then it goes to the tumbler for a few hours followed by annealing if needed. If I anneal, the brass goes back in the tumbler for an hour. Then I full length resize, trim to 1.920", champher, prime, powder and seat the bullet.

I'm not sure what the case life is for this brass, but I'm guessing it's probably 10-15 reloads. Anyone know from experience how many reloads 6.5 CM brass is good for?

Have any of you Creedmoor fellas found a nice niche for Hodgdon HybridV100? It seems this powder is ALWAYS available to me locally, and as such I thought if this pow is worth doing alot of load development for my Savage LRP, I was going to pick up a some more. I would prefer 4350, but I just can't seem to get my hands on the stuff. I have alot of 130 and 140 VLD's, 140 AMAX's, 120 AMAX's, and 142 SMK's.

I checked my throat this morning and WOW was there a lot more erosion than I thought. 2.239 from ogive in lands. My loads are 2.140 to ogive but they still shoot lights out.
I tried a different length and charge weight. 140 vld at 2.229 to ogive with 42.8 h4350. Speed was 2875 average with sd of 6. Put up a target at 150 yards and they shot ok. I think I was moving a little.

I bought a Satorius (formerly Acculab) scale last week and it showed up last night, so, of course, I had to test it. I didn't have anything I wanted to load, so I just setup my ChargeMaster like I do before I start loading and calibrated the Satorius. Basically, what I found was 42.6 gr on the ChargeMaster is 42.50 on the Satorius. Also, the ChargeMaster is pretty consistent, staying within +-.04 gr most of the time; however, there are the odd ball drops that are off over .1gr. (Usually low) I also got a Dandy trickler that can drop single grains. I'm looking forward to testing that too. So, I guess my 42.6 load is really 42.5.

I thought I had some Fed 210 primers to run some test loads with. I brought a pack of 100 a while back and played with the 308 rounds, but they liked the CCI 200s better. Apparently, they did not make the trip to VA with me as I can't seem to find them. I do have 2000 Fed 210s back in Ohio that I got last weekend. They did not make the trip to VA as I don't think you can take primers in carry on luggage. I'll go back and get them in about 3 weeks. Will have more to report then.
