6.5 vs. 308

They're both great rounds and have their pros and cons. I'm in a similar spot, re-barrel or build a new rifle....
Ill likely just rebarrel unless I come into some money or get a good deal on an 6.5 RPR

I own 308 and 260 Rem. Have 26 kills (whitetail/1 coyote) from 600 - 1,121 yards. I can tell you both won’t impress you. At 600 hunting take your pick. Shooting paper go 6.5. For a longer range hunting rifle go bigger

Sectional density is higher for a given weight bullet in 6.5 than .308. So theoretically the 6.5 will give better penetration at distances unless you go a lot heaver in .308.

I decided I wanted to get a new rifle last year to start out in a little bit of precision shooting but I also wanted to use it on white tail and hogs. I know the 6.5 is capable of this but I decided to get a 308. I got the tikka ctr and I love it. I’ll probably get a 6.5 one day also though.

second @Timetoshoot shoot. I have both and when I get slacks in shooting fundamentals, the .308 Win will get you back on track. Rather than buying "another" 6.5mm, I suggest that you take classes on the fundamental of marksmanship. You will get started with the proper base from the get-go. As to wind reading and such. I think a good teacher will help accelerate your learning curve. You will also learn from those classes what works and what doesn't. The "tuition" from those classes have saved me $'s down the line. Good luck.

I have a RPR in 6.5CM, and a Howa 1500 in 308, Both have about the same accuracy. I find I shoot the 308 a lot more. Up to 600 yards, I really do not see a difference in 308 versus 6.5CM. I reload, but bought milspec surplus 308 ammo for under 40 cents a round, which is cheaper than reloading. While the groups are not as good with mil spec ammo, I still do not have any issues ringing steel. There is no such thing as blasting ammo for 6.5cm. Right now try to find 6.5cm for under $2 a round. Plenty of 308 available. Sometimes I like to be precise take my time, fire a round, watch where the round went, make a correction, fire again and am happy. For that 6.5cm is great. Other times, I want to see how long it takes me to hit 10 different steel targets at different ranges, figure out what I did wrong and do it over again and go through a bunch of ammo, this is where I use 308. For hunting I like 308 for the heavier bullet weights and out to 400 yards I pretty much am good without adjusting the scope.

I would say after having both, go with the 6.5. You can get American Gunner 140s cheaper than any decent 308 ammo. Less recoil and less blast. Monetarily 6.5 is cheaper for me to shoot than 308 by a decent margin excusing current pandemic pricing of course.

just get yourself a 7.6 Creedmore and be done with it.
