Has anyone done this? Wondering how short I can go before reliability is an issue in a gas gun. I’m also playing with the idea of a suppressed 13.5” 308 as well as I’ve seen results with that on YouTube.

I have a 18.5” 308 bolt gun right now with a reflex can on it. The gas gun is my next one on the list. It doesn’t have to be a 1,000 yard gun. I just want more energy on target than what 6.5G offers. The longest I’d want to go is 16” since a 8” can would be going on it.

I just figure by the time you pay someone to drill and weld the brake on, you’re pretty close to the cost of a tax stamp anyway. Then if I wanted to use an even shorter barreled upper, it wouldn’t be an issue down the road.

My last efile was still sub 30 days, so it would be a different story if wait times were much longer.

I permanently attach my own so i don't have that problem. But I do see your point.

Back to your original question, i have had no issues with that 14" 6.5 CR. Runs great.

@Docsherm - are you running the BA Hanson 14.1? Run a can on it? Excessive gas with the carbine gas system? Accuracy?

Yes, it is the BA Hanson 14.1 barrel. I use a AAC SDN-6 on it. I did have to go to an H3 buffer with the can on it. Beside that no issues on function at all.

I have been getting SOLID sub MOA with that barrel. Usually about .5 or better at 100 yards. With the can it is about the same and i only get about 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. So that is an easy adjustment. I hsve only taken it out to 300 yards so far.

As for gas, I can honestly say I don't know. It is only of those things that i really only care about if i get burns on my face. Other that that it doesn't matter to me. I also use gasket maker on all of my charging handles to actually seal them.

Maybe I’ll just go with a 14” and pin a brake to it. It’ll be a little longer in overall length than my bolt gun, but I don’t think it’s going to be a deal breaker. Even going to a 13.5” 308 wouldn’t be that big of a difference.

Are you shooting heavies with the 14 or going lighter/faster ammo?

I am shooting 140 gr Hornady.

I have toyed with this idea for a year now to get a little more energy than my suppressed 12.5 grendel and still be compact. I was under the impression that anything under 18" in 6.5cm was hard to tune due to the increased pressure over 308. It's good to hear several people are running them reliably.
