6 SLR vs 6 Creedmoor with H1000

Im looking to build a hot 6 next year for my next PRS gun. I am interested in running the 110 SMK's at around 3100 fps. I would like to do it with H1000 in order to squeek enough barrel life out to last a season. I have a 223 AI training rifle that will get most of my training abuse (3000+ rounds a year, hopefully) and the 6mm Match rifle will only see about 1500 rounds a year.

There are 3 cartridges that are appealing, the 6 Comp Match, 6 Creedmoor, and the 6 SLR. I really dont want to fireform on a 6mm with limited life so that puts the 6 Comp Match in the rear.

I hear that the 6 Comp Match handles H1000 no problem, that the 6 SLR has to try pretty hard to get to 3100 and that the 6 Creedmoor generally wont make velocity with H1000.

I understand the 6 comp match has the volume advantage, but the 6 SLR and 6 Creed more are almost identical in volume to eachother.

Why does the 6 SLR make more speed (allegedly) with the H1000 than the 6 Creed when the capacities are almost identical?

The 6 Creed is attractive because you can run good brass without fireforming. The 6 SLR has to run the winchester or remington brass in order to form correctly without a donut.

Comments, ideas, and critiques are welcome. How do you like the 6 SLR if you run one? And what kind of speeds are you getting out of H1000?

Don't hamstring yourself with H1000. Consider N165 as well with 6SLR. I have two buddies with 1700+ rounds down long range Highpower rifles and both expect 2000 rounds. They both shoot 30" barrels up to 3300fps with 105 BHs, with a good node at 3250. Biggest complaint I have heard from them is the inconsistency in recent lots of Winchester brass.

No idea what to expect with a shorter barrel or a 110-115 gr.

I know you said you don't want to fireform, but if you can get over that hurdle the 243AI can throw the heavier pills pretty damn fast. A 105 A-Max north of 3200 is pretty impressive out of a 26" tube and I know others that have gone hotter with impressive results. Just a thought...

I have a 6mm Creedmoor that I have been doing work ups with using the 110smk, I originally planned on trying H-1000 but once I started researching it I decided to move on. I finally settled on RL-26. My load is cruzing at a little over 3150fps with no signs of pressure. I had it right at 3200 with slight ejector marks but backed it off to where I am now. They say RL-26 is a cool burning powder a lot like H-1000.

I fire form my 6 Comp Match ammo with 47 gns of H-1000 and shoot fire formed brass with 49 gns and 115 DTACs.

Fireforming loads are just as accurate as regular loads with zero pressure.

My high mileage gun has a Kreiger or Bartlien barrel on it and just went over 4,400 rounds. Still holds under 3/4 minute. Velocity has fallen off a bit, but not a big deal.

I am running the 6 slr for prs, 105 bergers or 107 smk, win brass, 210m, and H1000, 46.9 grains drives the 105's @ 3114fps a 26" benchmark 8 twist I was at 47.4 or 47.5 but I backed it down cause some matches have speed limit of 3150. I chose the H1000 too try and max barrel life. I have 1100 rd on it now. I did try a few loads of H4831sc as my gunsmith told me it was the deal for the slr. I got no difference in group size so stayed with the H1000

I'm using RL 26 in a 6 Comp Match and pushing the 110's at 3110.

I found a used up 6mm barrel and had it chambered at the same time as my good barrel and it's now the fire forming barrel. Just an option to consider. I did 500 pcs that way and then put the new barrel on.

I think im gonna give it a whirl in a 26" 7.5 twist. If the H1000 doesnt get it there I can always try a hotter powder and just swap back to the 6.5 when it burns up.

I've been using the 6slr for several years now. Pushing 105 hvlds with h1000. I really like the round. I'm running it very mild but I'm still above 3000fps.

The only other round in 6mm that id even look at is the 6 comp match. Don't let the fireforming process on the comp match scare you. I've talked to several people that fireform during matches, and they shoot great.
