6mm BR

Got out with my new Bartlein today from StraightJacket. Loaded up 25 rounds, all loads were H4895 @28.5g with a 105 Hybrid, Lapua/450’s to zero and get an idea. Shot 4 rounds, zero’d and shot the below group (shots 5-9) Pretty happy to say the least. 10 shot chrono looks solid.

Hey fellas, got a question. Maybe it's just late and I have overlooked something but I can't figure this out.

Measurements taken using:

Dedicated dial caliper with the Whidden shoulder bump gauge.
Digital caliper with the Hornady bullet comparator.

105 Hybrids measure, .641 BTO
105 VLDs measure, .631 BTO

In the same brass (Norma) sized on the same Whidden die with the same shoulder bump measurement I am getting a .017 difference in CBTO to the point of effortless bolt fall. Firing pin & ejector removed.

105 Hybrids measure 1.802
105 VLDs measure 1.785

Is this just simply the difference in bullet geometry? While I understand each different bullet type (and some of the same type, different lot #) will always measure out with a difference, am I wrong in my reasoning that in this case I should only have a .010 difference? Should the VLD not measure out with a longer CBTO?

So looking to see how many of you have a barrel that likes the round +.002 in the lands? Lapua brass, Berger 109, Varget 29.8, CCI450. Just re-barreled this winter and starting load development. Had 1 flier from the first round, next 4 were very acceptable.

I'm guessing when you say "brass prep" you are talking about neck tension. I don't shoot PRS, but shoot F-class and LR bench. biggest factor for me in es/sd next to consistent powder charge is neck tension. For all BR cases (.22, 6mm, 30mm) I have found a BR4's to work best ( I have a shit load of 205M that haven't been used in years). The only variation of 6BR that I have had a carbon ring problem was in a BRX. Shoot a BRA for the last 5 years with 105VLD's jammed .005 over 31.4 grains of Varget. My neck is .269 with 125 FB. Velocity is north of 3K in a 30" tube.
Wanna get rid of them pesky 205m's?

First trip out to with the new barrel, and first time shooting 6BR today. Doing 10 three shot groups in .2gr increments over the chrono to find flat spots in velocity and POI.
I picked up an MK Machining mount to get the Magnetospeed off of the barrel. I know it still has an affect, but hopefully less of one.
The first picture was that last group I shot at 100 yards, before moving to 200 yards for the second image. My wife shot the first 200 yard group and I shot the second two. These 3 groups had a .6 grain spread, but almost no POI shift, and they’re almost the same shape too. I have a feeling this rifle might become boringly accurate.
Winds were from right to left, and my focus wasn’t really on zeroing the gun. Just collecting velocity numbers.

What bullet and how deep were you seating? Good looking kit you have.

105gr Berger Hybrids. Everyone says .020”, so that’s what it’s at right now. I’m probably going to go right to .060” and see how it prints.
I just got back from the range verifying what seemed like a potential winner for powder charge.
30.5gr of Varget.
Pics are 100, then 200. Yes, I shot a smaller group at 200 than I did at 100. I have no issues admitting that I shanked the fifth shot on each.

I'm actually using same bullet (H4895 though) and I'm seating it .060 off. My proof barrel tells me the lands were at 1.776 ('Merica!) and I'm loading at 1.716 with really good results. Although honestly it liked 1.776 too! I came up with the seat depth due to the really informative article on PRB. We shoot 5 shot groups to keep us humble. The 5th ALWAYS goes awry. Thanks for sharing!

That’s the same article I read and determined to try .060” as well.
I also have some 4895, and VV150 to tray. @orkan is onto something with H4530 which I have as well. I think he’s shooting the larger capacity variants on the BR though, but worth a shot.
My lands were at 1.802”. I was able to find them with the barrel off and extracting with my finger nail.

I too have some 150 to try and some varget, but its soooo hard to go all experimenting when my sauce works good. I hope you'll post your results with the 150 and the 4350! Be well!

Thanks, you too, and I will.
I've been known to mess with a good thing more than a few times.

I run it in regular 6BR and 22BR as well as BRA... not just Dasher/BRX sized stuff. All of these little guys love H4350.

Lapua brass
Federal 205m
110gr A-Tips
29.6gr Varget
.030” jump

10-shot Avg: 2,715fps
10-shot SD: 3.2fps

She’s definitely a little laggard but the recoil is nonexistent, especially with the Maverick, and the consistency is unbelievable.

This is promising, I got a 28" barrel on order. Planning on chambering in the br. I got a 1000 109 hybrids I was going to try, my thought was if I reached 2700 fps I would be shocked. See how it goes

Embrace the slowness! It’s .1-.2 TOPS more wind than Dashers running 200+ fps faster. Watching trace is easy.

It might start out a little slow but give it 200 rounds or so to break in and I’d be very surprised if you weren’t in the same neighborhood.

Good luck!

Due to the current powder crisis I have been forced to seek other powders as my first 6br barrel is on the way. I snagged a 8lb jug of RL16, hopefully I can get it to work. Anyone else have any success with that powder? I haven't been able to find a whole lot of info.
I used Rl16 in my 22BR and got great velocities and low SD with it. I used 30.8 under the 88gr ELDM and was getting 3017 fps. Thinking about trying it in my new Dasher barrel too.

What velocity are you getting with the 105 and 30.5 varget? and how long is the barrel?

This is with a 6br
I had the same velocity with the same load as BLbennett1288 in my 26" 6mmBR in the summer. Mine was a little slower in the winter. It's a warm load and after a while the webb of the case became expanded enough that I had to start using a smaller die. So far I have 10 firings on the cases with tight primers pockets. It is a very consistent load and ES was 5 fps for 5 shots every time I checked over the chrono. I also got 9/10 shots into 1.5" vertical at 1000Y with that load.
