6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

A question for the bolt gun shooters. Have the opportunity to acquire a bolt repeater I always wanted, from a top maker made some years ago in 6mm Remington or 6-284. Same rifle type/barrel/twist. Primary use paper punching and critters not beyond 400yds. What would be better, as I like accuracy?
Tks.

284 has better possible brass but both are serious overkill for what your doing honestly you would be better off with 6mmbr or 6x47 or 6mm-250 or 243 even. if shooting under 400yds you dont need that much powder. however if you like laser like 6mm then either will work fine.

Get a straight .243 if you want 6mm and thats as far as your gonna shoot. with the right twist and bullet choice they're great for under 400 yds. Brass is easy to find as well as everything else. My freind has a 6-284 that shoots great but that has to be a bad barrel burner I would think.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

A 243 would be the best choice brass wise, but of the two you mentioned, then the 6mm Rem.

The 6mm-284 is an intriguing round, however. It's like candy. Buy a 6mm-284, develop an accurate round, shoot at few hundred critters and buy a new barrel. Then repeat; it's an easy way to make sure your on your barrel-makers X-mas card list.

But a 6mm-284 is a flat shooting and accurate cartridge, just not for long unfortunately.

Personally I always thought the 6-284 was a little overbore. But I have a couple of friends who have them. And they have proved me wrong. So I could easily be wrong about it being overbore. I do know that they found the round to be awesome?? Yes. But they also found the cartridge to be finicky in the reloading process, and tough on barrels. So it depends on how much you shoot. If you shoot alot the barrel burn may be an option to you. But if you are a ground hog hunter and only shoot a few hundred rounds a year then you will get some life out of the rifle. So alot depends on you.

Personally out to 400 yards, I do not think the 6mm caliber cartridges are necessary. However that is a personal choice. However the 22-250 should do whatever you need. With less recoil. But then what fun is that?? The 223 can also be pushed to 400 yards with proper bullet selection.

If i was dead set on a 6mm cartridge then I would probably go with a 243 to do what you want. It would be cheaper in the long run. And pretty well have the same effect. Tom.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

Thanks for all opinions. Just saved me some money, as I really don't need another toy. Will just keep using my Tango 51, Sako Varminter 6ppc, and my AR.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

Wise choice. The 6mm PPC will do very nicely and is superbly accurate. The Sako is a good rifle. And a decent free-floated AR can own 400 and under. Besides, a .243 can be tricky to set up correctly for long range and the big 6mms and 7mms are overkill at under 500. Spending your money to increase your proficiency with what you have is the best option.

Of the two you mention, 6mm hands down. The most amazing ctg I have shot for what you describe is the 20 TAC. Lapua makes brass and it is a 600 yard killer, flatter than a 22-250, drifts less in the wind, and quite, pleasent, and cheap to shoot with long barrel life.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

The question is 6mm rem or 6-284. I currently run a 6mm rem for an f-class rig. It will not have the same velocities as a 6-284 but with reloader 17 and a long barrel I bet you can get up to 3200 fps with a 105, 107 gr. bullet, an 8 twist would be needed for that size bullet. What I am basically saying is that there is no need for a 6-284 unless you want your barrel burnt out rather quickly. I like the 6 rem., and would love to have a 6mm AI, but thats another story.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

Basic reason for asking was that there were 2 Shilen made DGA Varminter repeaters for sale, one in 6-284 and one in 6mm Rem. The 6-284 sold and the 6mm Rem is a bit high right now, but I always wanted one of these since I saw them in Ed Shilen's shop in the early 70's when he rebarreled a Ruger #1 in 6mm Rem for me. Too pricey for me then, but they did look good. I liked the 6mm Rem as it was easy to load and the neck a little longer than .243 Win.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

the 6mm rem would be my pic but i would think it would have a 10 twist if you are lucky it has a 9 twist then you can shoot the 105gr A AMx and 107 sierra no problems i am shooting 107gr MatchKings in a 8.5 twist dasher no problems and have shot 117gr DTACs in the 8.5 twist over 3300fps no problems at all for stability. when we build a 6mm in 243 or larger for 105-107gr projectiles we only use a 9 twist as you have less issues with blowing bullets up when the firecracking starts. the actual diference you might see between the two calibres is 50fps mabe 100 with a 105 A MAx tops but the 6mm284's just roast barrels if you use them. if you got the 6mm and it has a 9 twist it will own the real estate your bravo51 already has actualy will put it to shame in drift and drop with a 105 A Max or 107 MatchKing. Wont have the energy but it is good well past 1200 yards will get you to 1500 but that is only if it is at least a 9 twist.

So for a close range rifle you have it covered with a ppc i use my 6mmBR for the same purpose short range and then step up.

Re: 6mm Rem or 6-284 which is better for my use

Bought me a perfect Shilen DGA Varminter in 6mm Rem.1 in 9 twist to try. Always wanted one so why not. Will see how she runs with 95 Berger VLD and A-Max 105's.
