6X5 Thread V5.0 *new 1/1/21*

The Tikka T1x which has made some appearances on this thread, came out again today. My setup has the elevation to do 300 yards as is, but today I was starting at 300, then falling back to 600 yards. I added a Waters Rifleman ELR base to my scope to get me to 600 yards and used the same setup at 300 yards. Shot a 6x5 at 300. Six groups on the one card was never going to fit on the target at 600 yds, so I didn't do a 6x5 there.

The wind was difficult. Wind flags were almost horizontal, I think that is about 15mph but gusting to low 20s mph at 135 degrees to firing position, ie from the right and from my back). Temperature approx 12C.

Tikka T1x 22LR, 16 inch barrel, A-Tec suppressor, Harris bipod.
RWS R100 ammo.

Here is my ELR adjustable base. Set to 40 millirad of elevation for 600 yards.

300 yard firing point

For interest, 600 yard firing point a bit later on. The range wind flags recently changed to Ukrainian flags ;)
At the 600 yard firing point, my elevation was 43-44 milirad (depending on wind and the tailwind component) and 8.3-10.3 milirad of windage (depending on how it was blowing).

Here is the 300 yard 6 x 5

Measured with tape measure; my calipers don't go large enough. Patches are there from earlier shooting. I can't count and I've given numbered the 4th card number 3 as well as the 3rd card in that photo, duh.
1 - 174mm
2 - 139mm
3 - 242mm
4 - 215mm
5 - 149mm
6 - 323mm

Smallest 139mm 5.47 inches
Average 207mm 8.15 inches

Got out today as part of my Rona quarantine 👎. It was about 54⁰ and a little breezy 5-6 constantly switching and gusting 8-11 ish. So not the easiest day. But here is some Center X and Polar at 100. Random lots out of my V-22 360 with a 26" Benchmark 15t. I didn't have any wind indicators other than what I could feel on my face and see occasionally in the mirage.

Decided to give the Vudoo a whirl with some SK Red (ES was about 45FPS over 50 rounds). Not great at 50 but I did have the Magneto Speed hanging off the barrel and winds were switchy at 6 to 8 with gusts to 11. On to the results…

@jbell Question for you... I have zero expereince with the Vudoo's but it seems like now that I'm nearing the 1000 round mark the barrel (20" MTU Ace) seems to be waking up. Have you experienced this or have I lost (more of) my mind?

Vudoo says about 1000 rounds for the barrel to show its true colors. Which is also why to wait a 1000 before sending it to Lapua.

@littlepod Thank you. Not sure if it was me (getting a grip on grip, trigger press, etc.) or the barrel coming around (at 800 rounds-ish) but it was like a switch fipped!

There wasn't much vertical spread in the Polar was there? :)

Not bad for that ammo in those winds. I have you on the latest results.

Also, I have see an accuracy improvement in a lot of rimfire barrels after several hundred rounds not just the VGW barrels. However I have owned a few that were as good (or as bad) as they would get from day 1. But an improvement is not uncommon after several hundred rounds.

I got another new rifle. This is going to be my windy day ARA Factory class gun. This is the first outing. After I got my zero I shot a 6x5 with Norma Tac for shots and giggles. I was surprised. Then I broke out a good lot of Center X (not my best lot) and tried different hold methods.

I made it out again with the 457 VPC and Norma Tac. I had to try it again. I had to make changes to the rifle to be ARA Factory legal. I removed the weighted ARCA rail and added the weights to the bipod. I wanted to make sure it still shot well. This lot of this ammo is fire. I beat my previous score by a little.
I probably could have dipped into the 2’s with Center X, but didn’t have time to try.

Thought I'd give this a try. CenterX at 50y was the one worth keeping. Roughly 80-85F. Pretty negligible wind. That's a T1X with an Athlon Midas Tac and Harris Bipod and rear bag.

First time out in a long time for me. 1 st 10 includes the clean cold bore with Center X, then some groups with Center X in pretty windy conditions. The wind dropped just after I switched over to SK Rifle Match and Standard Plus when I was about done with the target. It stayed mostly calm for a few minutes so I just adjusted up 0.5 mil and then again 1 mil so I didn't have to change targets. Anyway I was able to get some decent groups out of the Rifle Match and Standard Plus today which is great!

jbell, do you know if there are any other competitive on-line matches for .22 shooters that I can check out? The 6x5 is certainly a great place to compete, but I was wondering if there are any others similar to this available too?

Thanks,

I dont off the top of my head. We have tried to get some other challenges started here but they fizzled out quick. Why don’t you think something up and start one here. It can be a lot of work but it is very cool to see people progress.

Thanks jbell. I might just collaborate with you and see what we can do. We have a Postal Match running now, for the last 4 years, but with Covid and the ammo shortage, our participation has dropped to less than 10 shooters a month, so we will be phasing it out at the end of June. I just put a summary together and sent a link to your thread so they have some other competition they can try in the absence of our matches. I will check the other Forums to see if anything else is active, and also point them to anything I find. Let me send you a PM in a few days and show you what matches we offered, to get your sense of any that might be interesting for folks to try out. One thought is to maybe cycle the matches to keep interest up, maybe a different match every 2-3 months, like a tournament, and then move on to another match. I'll be in touch. Thanks very much for your ideas and for maintaining this thread!

Finally got a chance to try at 50m, even if it was in the drizzle.

Prone, front rest and rear bag, Sauer 200 STR
12degC, 1m/s wind, 1001hPa, drizzle

Session was truncated - found it hard to relax when someone was shooting clay pigeons right over my head  (thats why the last group was the last group).

using the second set of 6 i get:
best group 0.298 MOA
Average 0.385

The only reason to add these results was to include the 17hm2 cartridge in the 6x5.
Didn't see any in the previous posts so here it is...

Eley 17 grain 17 hm2
It's no longer being manufactured.

AM-JKLUBydZvV_-1cb3BEwYUAKH8TO0BTWSZFyfU2wJeDioX7RqzYQCEtNuhaXEIJZq4x0cLI-1UDbWk2I1At30EqN-bv0F41jV4LqS5yt4FnQEa5rIA3e7EJXYGsKspoIbgr6Y-3o24EFyuJY4M6lkqE9qc=w430-h360-no

CZ 455 Fuglie and Lilja heavy barrel at 100 yards

1.7 inches vertical, 1.3 inches horizontal aggregate spread
0.7 inches up to 1.5 inches for 5 shot group sizes
Best 5 shot group 0.7 inches, ten group average 1.06", it's hunting ammunition.
CCI expects their hm2 to average 2 moa for 5 shots at 100 yards.
The Eley does a bit better. It's still just varminting ammo.

AM-JKLXeYleJlyMMzYwspgCIuYV8ivxlrmXmiNsPX_Y-XkkrOw7NxDmNnemBWY2kpSYMgj9To2PjL-Ozl5yz0EGSrPJ1AsWLvxz6-lmOtW3uPKNcOq4DnkBSLS2Qm57Mtc2sJRlLyCqOFwrxa6BghYGeDW5K=w759-h550-no

At 50 yards applying the half third rule of rimfire
the groups would range from 0.2 inches to 0.5" for 5 shots
with the aggregate spread being about 0.6" by 0.4".
Good enough for head shots on small game at that distance.

Jerry, this is Larry. I created the target specifically for the 6x5, and it's similar to one we used in our Postal Matches. I've attached a clean copy for you to use. The dimensions are (in inches): dot = 0.125, inner ring = 0.5, middle ring = 1.0, outer ring = 1.5.

jbell, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I would like to announce the new postal matches on a new thread. I hope this will be ok.

Shooters, I have started a new thread (link included below) on Sniper's Hide for a series of Postal matches you can participate in. Rules and targets are included. Please take a moment and check it out.

Thanks,
