Finnished up my 7/08 project. I bought this low mile LSR built bbled action from a Hide member.

LSR did all action and bbl work. I did all the stock work.
1/9 twist 22" Broughton 5c bbl.
Seekins 20MOA rail, bedded/glued.
Badger USMC rings
Rifle Basix trigger.
Nightforce 3.5-15x50 R1
Old Style McM A4 pillar and glassed by me.
Badger M5 DBM
Blackhawk stock pack

Should make for a dandy tactical/steel plate rig and killing machine.
It will get the rattle can treatment soon...........

No idea..., but being that LSR did the bbl and action work Im not a bit worried. I actually just finnished putting it together. Like 10 minutes ago. Hell my dies arent even in yet!

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Very nice RM! I too see a 7/08 in my future just for the 162's. But I think Im going to go with a 7/08 improved to get that extra bit of speed.

why? it looks damn good as is.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Nice build! I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 7mm-08 also.

I'd love to hear those velocities. Also, did you consider the Ackley Improved version at all? If so, why'd you choose to go the standard route? Just curious, I'm on the fence about it.

Lastly, do you have a total weight on that rig?

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Ill get the weight for you guys asking. I can say it feels lot less than my M40A3.

We will see on velocities... Im hoping for a certian figure, so we will see.

Simply put I never considered 7/08AI with this project because the bbled action was already a done deal vanilla 7/08.

For the 7/08 AI questions, and since I have no idea, what level of performance gains would you be hoping to gain by AIing?

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

5% gain is what I think is expected with an AI gain, that is hopefully around 100 fps with the 7-08 parent cartridge. Of course this is all dependent, but maybe a rough guess. Might be just what's needed to make the 162 grain competitive with the 6.5 short action calibers. Would be sweet to get some nice velocities without quite the barrel burning of the .284..

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

I did gain but around 50 fps from a 22" barrel with 140s. Did work on loads much before I sold the rifle to a buddy that wanted it. Just wanted to be different.

i wonder how much better barrel life you would get with a 7-08ai vs. a straight 284. i know of a 284 that is at 3k rounds now and still seems to be shooting great. i was scoring the target next to his last weekend. he is shooting 175 smks at about 2850 fps. same load and barrel as my 284.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Very cool!!
My 7-08 silhouette rifle is going to become a precision rig, as I haven't been shooting much HP sillywet this past year or so.

I haven't tried out the Amax's yet, but I have high hopes-24" Douglas XX Magnum contour tube, waiting on my Manners T4, Badger BDM and a base.....

I have the straight .284 as well, and think it is an incredible cartridge, but I have trouble with it as a short action cartridge. I ended up moving my barrel over to a long action to shoot the 175s and maybe the 180s. I think the 7-08 improved (my next personal build) will provide a great platform for the 162 in a short action. If someone (cough Berger or Lapua) would make a 143-145 high BC bullet in the 7mm that would sure make for a stellar match with the 7-08 and improved cartridges.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

I've been droolin over that damn thing since you snagged it dogr. Did you ever bother to shoot it?

Nice lookin rig 7rm, Chris makes a hammer.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Small range report.. My brass didnt come in an all I had was 20PCS.

I used Varget.

42.0
162AMAX
R&P Brass
Fed210M
Avg 2651FPS
ES- 26
SD- 10
Under .5MOA

42..5
162AMAX
R&P Brass
Fed210M
Avg 2673FPS
ES- 27
SD- 11
.75MOA

Strangely the best load over the chrono shot the shittiest-

43.0
162AMAX
R&P Brass
Fed210M
Avg 2710FPS
ES- 16
SD- 6
Slightly over 1MOA

What are some of you 7/08 shooters running? I have some RL17 sitting here but am haveing a hard time finding data.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

these are the loads recommended to me. I will be loading them as soon as rifle is scoped
grin.gif

1. H4350 with the 162 Amax At 45.0gr and seating the bullets 0.005" off the lands, getting very consistent speeds around 2650fps with and SD of around 5fps.

2. IMR 4064, 40.3 CCI BR2 162gr Horn A-Max 2670 fps

and another reply I got:

3. I get 2750 with imr4007 in a 26" brux bbl 9 twist. My load is 45-46 grains depending on temps. My chamber is throated for the 162 a-max so bullets seat above the donut. Tried rl-17 but haven't worked with it too much. Initial testing got me a little above 2750 but the chrono data with 4007 was better.

Sorry but the world is only big enough for the one and only Mooooof. Try some RL-15. I'll dig up the data and send it your way. That's what my best group came from, although the es was yuck.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Im gonna give RL19, RL17, and H4350 a try. The 42.0 grain loading of Varget shot really well, and with a little better case prep the ED/SD would shrink considerably. Im just hoping to break the 2700 FPS line.

I believe RL 19 & RL 17 will be to slow from my experience. You may want to try Vihtavuori powders like N540, N150 or N550. RL 15 worked well with heavy bullets for me. RL 17 is IDEAL in the 284 and 280 cartridges which have a fair amount more capacity than a 7mm-08, so a faster powder is the way to go especially with a shorter bbl..

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

I gave RL17 a try. Gave some impressive velocities... 2820 FPS at the max charge! Groups were so so. 75FPS ES.

H4350 did pretty good at top end loads. 47.5 & 48.0 doing the best. 2670 for the 47.5 and 2710 for the 48.0 loading. May revisit these.

Came across some WW brass and tried Varget again. The 42.0 load shined yet again. I picked up approx 25+FPS AVG with the WW brass over the R&P. New AVG is 2680. ES/SD were acceptable.

Im gonna try some IMR 4007 and RL15 tomorrow.

Good to hear and thanks for keeping us posted. Any thoughts of trying 168 vld's?
