7.62/308 Battle rifle with the best accuracy?

Hi all, I am looking for a battle style rifle with great reliability and the best accuracy. Im looking at something in the 16" - 18" barrel length. I would really prefer 16" unless the 18" has more pros than cons. I was initially looking at the LMT MWS, but was then turned on to the SCAR 17s. My rifle budget is no more than $3k max. I really want the best accuracy possible out of a NIB rifle, but my opinion is what good is the accuracy if it isn't reliable? Thanks in advance.

A pursuit of the BEST usually doesnt include a budget cap. Does that budget cap include optics, accessories, match ammo etc etc?

Budget is for a rifle only right out of the box. No optics, accessories, or ammo. Would be a nice plus if the gun could cycle surplus ammo well. (note I said cycle, not drive nails)

As everyone probably knows I love my KAC EMC. With that said it can not be had for 3K. I also have really enjoyed my DPMS 16" match. A buddy of mine and I ( only because he has a 308 block!! ) built this. DPMS upper and lower( I wanted to be able to use the same mags) DPMS bolt, Wilson Match 16" SS barrel, Wilson match lo pro gas block, Troy full length railed forearm, Troy BUIS , CMMG 2 stage match trigger, VLTOR E Mod stock, Ergo grip, I probably left something off!! It doesn't look as sweet as the KAC or shoot as soft as it does but it's a tack driver!! 2k invested!! Probably couldve gotten it a little cheaper but oh well!!! I always say, it's not how much you spend it's how much you shoot!! I just aquired 7 sealed cans of LC M118LR with the same lot number!! I plan on shooting some!!! I really like to reload but couldn't pass the deal in the LR!! Anyway that's my 2 cents!! Also the KAC is a soft shooting 7.62 carbine. I can shoot it all day but the DPMS seems to beat me up. I'm no pansy it's just that noticeable!!! GYZ

Ive had a number of high end 308's. DSA SA58c, AR10T based GAP, SCAR17, LMT MWS, and currently my KAC EMC. But the reasons I believe the EMC is best and thus justify the cost may not mean a hill of beans to you. So you really need to evaluate the pros and cons of each system and what they bring to the table and decide what meets YOUR needs. Something like GYZ's DPMS may well meet your needs at a price point that lives in your budget. I guess what I am really trying to say is that I can only tell you whats "best" for me,not for you.

I am currently shooting a RRA Lar-8 and with handloaded ammo it is keeping less than 1/2 moa. I guess you could have a better group than that, but why? I mean when the winds-a-blowin its going to come to down to a spitty thumb on the front sight and your tongue held just right anyway LOL. So for somewhere around 1500 you can get into a rifle that shoots better than you do (i do anyway). I clean it, but not am not anal about it and it shoots great every time. I have a post on here somewhere with a target for proof if ya need it! The fit of all the parts is perfect, no slack anywhere to be had, and the two stage trigger is really crisp. my 2 cents

Check out F&D defense. New on the market but they seem very promising. They use 5r barrels by Lilja. According to their independent testing average group size at 100 is .443". They're priced towards the top of your budget at $2850. http://www.fd-defense.com/fd308

With a good barrel this is a viable option, and I'm very happy with mine, but it's really not going to be a huge savings over the complete rifles posted above. Depending on the quality of parts the accuracy may be there, but you won't have the resale value if that's a concern. Plus the LaRue comes with a Dillo and Dillo Dust.

your rifle is bad ass !! but yeah I do like the value of the OBR,myself.

I think I eneded up with just under 2 grand for my Maten. but man is it a kick ass all around rifle. I went with a standard A2 stock and decided on a JP vtac rail.....which has really grown on me now.

I'm sure you do! I personally like the Hogan .308 which is similar to the GAP 10 except it is gas/piston.

This is my 18 inch rifle, but you can get different sizes and all the rifles are incredible accurate. Sub MOA and my groupings are tight. Hogan manufactures their own triggers which have no wiggle or movement until they "break like glass." Recoil is more similar to an AR-15. A great rifle and worthy of a glance.

Also, POF 308 or Hogan 308. In my personal preference I would stick with the Hogan 308 because I waited 4 months for a POF and only waited 3 weeks for a Hogan 308. Expert quality rifles.

MBA (Main Battle Rifle) or a rifle chambered in a MBA round...there is a big difference. Want off the shelf...it's something with iron sights, a magazine, and go...many options above this. M1, M1A, Romanian PSL, Yugoslavian M76, HK series in 762 NATO (many clones out there...PTR is a favorite)...yada, yada... will get you started. The Armalite AR-10 was adopted by many countries and it's a feed ammo and go weapon. Once you start to accessorize and goochie-fi a weapon it steps out of the traditional MBR realm. The AR-10 and HK series of rifles will produce the best accuracy out of the run of the mill MBRs available. If you want a SPR (special purpose rifle) then lend an ear to those who have commented. Of the weapons you listed...the SCAR 17 equiped with irons will probably dial in better than anything out there from a commercial sales stand point. But...I've seen, and own, DPMS LR-308s that sell for a tad over $1K that will shoot MOA all day with factory match ammo. Decisions...what a bitch.

The purpose for the rifle will be a precision range rifle, but if shit.hits the.fan I could effectively handle it in close or reach out with it...whatever the situation at hand calls for. Basically a "go to" "do it all" rifle.

Then you're looking for any number of 16" to 18" offerings from a couple of manufacturers. Optics...start with the Leupold VX-2 line and go up...real CLICKs...on the 1/4 MOA adjustments. Good ammo...you can sight the rifle in with the federal red box...but spend an afternoon with that Federal Gold Medal Match and SEE the difference. Trigger...if you have to save for something other than optics I'd save for a Timney trigger. Again...these factory barrels HAVE produced cloverleag results at 100m with 1: Good Ammo, and 2: a good trigger.

There is ALWAYS!...something better out there. There is also an exceptional compromise in between.

Heavy barreled aramalite ar-10T or their SASS mightmdomit for you. Either rifle will easily shoot to 1000 yards and you will have cash left over for your optic per your request.

You could also have someone build you one for a hundred bucks. Just search the net and you can have a top,of the line end ar with top,line parts for less than 3k easily.....think Krreiger or noveske barrel, geisselle trigger, take your,pick on the upper and lower and just have a quality smith put together.

I think I just had a bad one, mine was made in 2009 and I heard that was not a good year. I have friends with them and theirs are great, I guess I bought a turd, I need to check them out again as I am thinking about getting another .308 gas gun.

If you really want to spend the money, and if money was not a concern for me I think I would have went with the GAP10or Larue. Unfortunately for me, money was a huge concern. I found the RRA LAR-8 Mid to be a good compromise. It is solid and consistent. I have just under 200 rounds through it with no issues and good groups. I have gotten mostly 1.5 inch groups with the 150 grain Winchester Super X sold at Walmart for $18.99. With the one box of $40 150 grain Federal Match I was able to get under an inch easy and shoot the four corners out of a 1 inch square. The "range" was 112 yards. I am not a great shot, and I am new the the rifle game. I think that is pretty good for a 16" mid length out of the box that I paid $1163 for new. I know the barrel can be upgraded to a Wilson bull barrel. PS. I love my RRA but if I had the money I would still want a GAP10 or Larue!
