Hey guys, Im new to the long range shooting sport and I need some opinions. Im currently working on a rem 700 build based on an m40a1 in .308. Im thinking on doing another 700 build but Im confused about what caliber to set up with. I dont reload yet as Im looking to buy a house with an extra room to do so. What calibers do you guys recommend to build a long range 700 with? Thanks for any help.

Kilroy - Since you are already using a 308 why not do a 30-06? They may not be the most in vogue caliber but they have plenty of punch to get you to 1,000 and well beyond...especially with the new 208 a-max's (.648bc) and RL-17. When it comes to reloading you can use the same bullets in either rifle, the shell plates would be the same as well. Plus components are plentiful and inexpensive. If you ever needed factory ammo it should be easily obtained. Just an idea...

Then you should quit this addiction and focus on the house bro. The money you save will easily buy several extra rooms... Just kidding.
I would vote for the 300 win mag. Loading it with the 208 AMAX, or the 210 Berger then you have a stick that can punch out to about 1500 or more depending on the elevation of your location. I think that this is a bit better than the 30-06, since you don't reload now. At least the 300 win mag will have match target like the 190 grains.

Stupid question but is the 300 win mag and 260 rem accurate? Which would be easier for me to buy accurate ammo from a store?

Don't know about the 260 match ammo, if any available. The 300 win mag has the Federal Gold Match 190 grains (about $40+/20 rounds) and Black Hills 190 grains (about mid $30's/20 rounds). There is also HSM brand as well. All in all, I would say reloading is the best option. Of course, depending on how many rounds you shoot per month, that may or may not justify the initial cost of reloading. BTW, the 300 win mag is the long range flatform for the step up cartridge before the 338 LM became available. The Army, Navy and Marines are still using them, so accuracy is not going to be an issue.

Ok, would 300 win mag be a good competition round? Ultimetly thats what Id like to work towards, building a rifle that'll be good for competietions.

Why not just build one rifle in .308, put a little more into it, practice like hell with it? Master it, and it is all you should ever NEED. The .308 is tried and true, and has plenty of options for factory and reloading. It's easier on barrels, managable recoil, ammo is relatively easy to come by. It is capable of making it out to 1000 yards.
Also, why are you planning another build when you aren't done with the first? Plan your builds based on your specific needs. Your needs will be clear after experience and some trial and error.
If, down the road, you find you need more (or less) gun, you will have a much better idea of what you require.

I'll have to agree with pointblank, at least for now. I have spent the last month trying to figure out my next build either a 300 RUM or 300 Win Mag. It actually occured to me monday ( while reading an article on kimber's new 300 win) that I have two very accurate .308's, one sr25 match and one 700P that rarely get taken out. I have decided the build will be a 300 Win Mag, but won't get started till late next year. I have way too much trigger time to catch up on.
