I know this isn't a hunting site but I have looked everywhere and figured someone here might have some good advice. It is legal to use 223 to hunt deer in my state(oklahoma) and I am trying to research the best brand of 223 to use to hunt deer with a Remington 700 sps tac 223 (1:9 twist 20" barrel). I won't be taking any shots over 200yards.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

There was a very detailed article on using small calibers including the 223 on deer in one of the shooting magazines. Wish I could remember the name of the mag, but don't.

Bottom line was that shot placement is criticle. Also, don't count on an exit wound or blood trail.

223 is good stuff at 200 and in....Like others have said, the Barnes Triple shock is good and so is the Seirra Game Kings.

We can't use 22cal for deer in KS.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

Shoot them in the head or high shoulder and anything will work from 223. After having several deer make it 100-300 yards after a perfect heart and hung shot that liquified the vitals I don't shoot them anywhere else anymore. I've had them run that far even with a hit from a big magnum that left a basketball size exit wound. I shot another in the vitals that was on the run with a 155 scenar at 3000fps that liquified the heart and lungs (there was none to speak of) and blew the bottom of its chest cavity out big enough it left a 12" wide blood path the whole 150-200 yards it ran.

With a high shoulder or head shot they drop like a ton of bricks every single time. That shot at 200 yards and less is a chip shot as long as you have some sort of a support, and not too challenging off hand either.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

I use a 52gr matchking in top of 25gr varget with a cci 450 under that. I only shoot in the neck and it is devastating. I wouldnt recommend it for a shoulder shot but as I said neck shot and game over.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

There are several good loads out there.

62 grain fusion
64 grain power point (winchester)
62 grain TAP barrier
62 grain federal OTM, this load will both yaw, separate AND penetrate (usually available from midwayusa for 11 bucks)
75 grain TAP
75 grain Prvi Partizan
77 grain match loads (various makes)

Yes, your rifle WILL stabilize those bullets, I have one.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

We use .223 quite a bit for deer. Loaded or bought ammo with the Barnes DPX is a solid clean killer. We shoot them in the shoulder and they either drop on the spot or go less than 20 yds and die. Internally when we dress them they cause lots of damage. Everything from does to 140 class bucks same result. This is from 30 yds to 140 yds. Started developing a load for the .223 and deer for my son when he was 5 and needed low recoil in a small package. I used the 52 gr DPX because his rifle is 1:12 but they make several different grain bullets and Nosler makes a 60 gr Partition. He is able to shoot most all of my rifles well now at 9 but still hunts with the .223 because it is so easy to shoot. It did so well that I had a .223 built for myself. As with anything shot placement is the key. I have seen little does shot low in the lungs with a superdupermagnum300 run 200 yds before dying. The shoulder shot gives a good sized target, destoys the running gear and the bone chips pummel heart and spine.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

the Hornady 175gn A-max factory loaded will be a great 223 hunting load.it should or will work just like a NBT.

to bad your not loading your own I was going to say use the Berger 75gn VLD to this is my little load I like to use when I hunt with my 223.I just love hunting with my 223 from 100-200 yards.anything past that I go for the 308.

yes, putting it in the right place is the most important part

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

I've shot half a dozen or so with 69g custom competition
with 25g of varget, all neck and head shots under 200yds.
Last year I tried the 62 tsx over 26g of varget, they done
Well but I'm still scared to shoot one in the body, I don't want a long blood trail.

Re: 700 SPS tac 223 deer load question

Although it was conducted in the 1990's the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources did a fairly decent job os studying calibers/kills and I have cited it in many conversations.

Here is a link:

I think it offers some great insight to caliber options but really drives home the fact that shot placement is what really matters.
